Enthusiasts lead alife of Riley<br />

Rileycar enthusiastsfrom<br />

around the country<br />

converged on Rangiora last<br />

week.<br />

The Riley Car Club of<br />

New Zealand held its<br />

diamond jubilee rallyinthe<br />

town,witharound 30 Riley<br />

cars plussupportvehicles,<br />

including 13 from the <strong>North</strong><br />

Island and some Australian<br />

visitors,enjoying what the<br />

region had to offer.<br />

ownerGeorge Calder said<br />

Rangiora was chosenasthe<br />

rallyhub ‘‘because it ticked<br />

all the boxes’’.<br />

‘‘We always base it in a<br />

town which has all the<br />

facilitiesand we got out<br />

each day on trips around<br />

the area.’’<br />

From the Rangiora base,<br />

the Riley cars ventured to<br />

Halswell, Lincoln,<br />

Lyttelton, Amberley,<br />

Oxford, the Waimakariri<br />

Gorge and Mt Thomas,<br />

visiting car museums and<br />

sheds across the region.<br />

Mr Calder says British<br />

Riley motor cars spanneda<br />

70­year period starting at<br />

‘‘the dawnofmotoring’’.<br />

‘‘Theywere very<br />

successful in motorsport<br />

and were known for being<br />

very rugged and strong, and<br />

tendedtohold together in<br />

all conditions.’’<br />

He said the oldest car in<br />

the rally was from <strong>19</strong>28,<br />

with the newest from <strong>19</strong>67.<br />

Both were driven by their<br />

Kaiapoi owners.<br />

Mr Calder and his wife<br />

Karen drove a<strong>19</strong>37 Riley,<br />

which he bought in <strong>19</strong>66 as<br />

ateenager for £40.<br />

concert at the hall,<br />

followed by afternoon<br />

tea, all of which is free.<br />

toward the restoration<br />

and improvementsto<br />

the hall, built in <strong>19</strong>36,<br />

wouldbeappreciated.<br />

from 9.20am at the cafe,<br />

at $15 avehicle. The<br />

firstcar will leave about<br />

10.40am.<br />
