Jared at the helm in trying times
By DAVID HILL
JaredKelly is hoping for the best
and preparing for the worst.
When he was appointed
Pegasus Bay School principal
towards the end of lastyear,
Jarednever imagined he would
be leading the school community
through the unfoldingCovid19
crisis.
‘‘When you’re getting daily
updates fromthe Ministry(of
Education) you can’t help but be
involved in its evolution.
‘‘It’s about taking the timetobe
considered in your decisionmaking
and taking into
considerationyour own
community, and working out the
best fit.’’
Jaredsays his staffhave plans
in place to providehome
learningtools with the school
now closed for amonth.
‘‘Butweare alsomindful that
we don’t wanttooverwhelm a
situation which is already quite
stressful.’’
Asidefromthe evolving Covid
19 crisis, Jaredsays it has been
largely astressfree transition
sincesteppingupfrom deputy
principaltothe top job.
‘‘I’mreally invested in whatthe
staffare doing. Icame here
originallyfor asyndicate leader
role and moved up quickly.’’
Jaredhas lived all over New
Zealand and spent much of his
childhood in Northland, where
his fatherwas principalofa
smallschool.
‘‘My father’s family is from
Canterbury, so I’ve always had a
special connection to this
region.’’
His wife, Rachel Kelly, was
Out and about ... Pegasus Bay School principal Jared Kelly chats to pupils during morning break.
born in Kaiapoi and thefamily is
now fullysettled in Pegasus.
Rachel is asyndicateleader
and son Jacob, aged 5, has just
started school, ‘‘so the the whole
family is now at Pegasus Bay
School’’, Jaredsays.
‘‘I love it here. We’re just two
minutes from the beach, so you
can crack the surf in the morning
and then go for awalk in the
mountains in the afternoon.‘‘It’s
apretty special place to be.’’
His mother, Barbara Kelly, is a
junior syndicate leader at Oxford
Area School.
He says the syndicateleaders
have been takingturnstofill the
deputy principal role, with Di
Murphy,from Bamford Primary
School, in Christchurch, having
just been appointedtothe role.
‘‘It’s agood opportunity for
them to see whatit’s like from the
other side,soit’s reallygood for
their professionaldevelopment.
‘‘It’s all about vision. If you
believeinsomethingand you can
see apathway, you’ve got to
follow it,’’says Jared, who
jokingly admits Rachelmay now
haveher eye on the top job.
Abig part of his previous role
as deputyprincipalwas
overseeingPegasus Bay School’s
teacherled innovation project,
which received Ministryof
Education funding in 2016.
‘‘It’s been really pivotal in
setting our direction. It’s
redefined our teaching and the
typeofpeople we want to employ
and has allowed us to develop a
really clear vision of who we
are.’’
Now the focus is on firmly
embeddingthe visioninto the
school’s curriculum.
