Welcome to The Professional Recovery Magazine
Well there is certainly only one subject
I can start with this issue. Since the
Coronavirus took hold in what was only a
short time ago it has now become the centre
of all our lives.
We are all trying to get through it the best
way we can, both at home at work, but the
overriding priority is safety. Sadly some of you
will have already been affected directly by
the virus and our thoughts and best wishes go
out to you. Derek has put together a fantastic
feature on the effect of the virus on your
business and some positive steps you can all
be taking in the coming weeks both in the
vehicle and the office environment.
We aim to produce our magazine as normal
over the next few issues but we’re conscious
that some of you will be working from home,
unable to receive your copy. Therefore from
this issue the magazine will also be produced
as a digital edition, the link sent out free to all
emails on our database. This will carry on for
as long as the emergency situation remains. If
we don’t have your details and you would like
the magazine link sent to you please email me
on the address below.
This issue you may have already noticed we
have made a few changes.
We’ve started with the packaging. This
has been planned for some time now; going
forward all issues will be posted in the new
paper cover. We’ve got rid of the old plastic

Coronavirus Update
As we are in an ever changing situation regarding the Covid-19
outbreak, we would like to make a statement regarding
our publications and events.
Our overriding concern and priority is for the health and well-being for everyone involved in the
recovery industry and their families. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to anyone that has
been affected by the virus.

Partnership Publishing is committed to providing industry news and business advice at this worrying time.
Our print schedule will remain as long as our printer is permitted to keep working.
For issues 322, 323 and 324 we will also be creating a digital version that will be distributed to all our
email contacts. This is the first time we have produced an electronic copy of the magazine and we believe
both advertisers and readers need every assistance at this time to make sure they receive the latest issue.
We will send you a link to this via email when it is uploaded.
Professional Recovery Tow Show
The show this year which is scheduled for 30 September – 1 October is still going ahead. With the show
being the recovery industry’s main focus of attention for the year we feel we will hopefully have ample time
after this current situation is resolved to organise this year’s event. We are having regular talks with the
venue and will be giving regular updates via email, social media and the Professional Recovery Magazine.
Professional Recovery Roadshows
At present all three Roadshows are still going ahead. However as we stand two of the venues, Haynes and
Brooklands, are now closed to the public. We will be monitoring the situation closely and will be making an
announcement about our first Roadshow held on 19 May at Haynes Motor Museum at the end of April. We
want to give all Roadshows the best possible chance of going ahead but are conscious that both exhibitors
and visitors need time to plan.
In line with the Government advice all of our staff are now working from home with provisions in place to
work as normal.

Successful weekend
for the IVR
The 37th IVR AGM Weekend provided an exceptional agenda of
training, meetings, and information giving, all rounded off with
the ever-spectacular Gala Dinner. This year saw the introduction of
an auction to raise money for two charities, Prostate Cancer UK and
The British Heart Foundation which proved to be a great success.
With the generosity of those who donated auction lots and all who
bid so enthusiastically on the auction, a significant amount of money
was raised. The IVR would like to extend a huge thank you to all the
financial support given by the event sponsors.
The highly coveted Jack Ovenden Award for outstanding student,
sponsored by the AA, was awarded to Peter Hamill of Hamills
Recovery Service and was presented by Rory Dewar from the AA.
Congratulations must also go to the finalists Steve Austin of Hinton
Rescue Bath/Bristol, Bradley Davis-Cole of Egerton’s Recovery
Ltd, and Johnathan Wainwright of Crouch Recovery who were
introduced as excellent advocates for the industry
The Bill Jackson Award made a return this year. The award
celebrates industry excellence in the completion of an
accomplished recovery job. This was jointly awarded to Hough
Green Garage and CMG who had joined forces to complete a
particularly tricky recovery of a crane tipping off a low loader. In
presenting the award Nick Ovenden highlighted that it was good to
see companies working together in this way showing good industry
collaboration.
After the AGM itself, Jim Cockerill, Warwickshire’s Forensic
Vehicle Examiner/Forensic Collision Investigation Unit, gave a
very informative presentation on the focussed efforts the Police
in Warwickshire are involved in, in eradicating unsafe equipment
and unsafe practices from vehicle recovery in their area. This was
followed by a panel of experts questions and answers opportunity.
Those on the panel answering questions were Wayne Carey of
Highways England, Richard Goddard of Professional Recovery
Operators Federation, Ben Johnson representing Slow Down Move
Over, Derek Firminger of ERRI and Mark Hartell from the Institute of
Vehicle Recovery.

traffic officer Alison
just mead to inspire
In her ‘day’ job, Alison Lycett is a Highways England traffic
officer helping to keep thousands of drivers safe and our roads
moving. But when she gets home, Alison is making history.
Alison recently featured in the Channel 5 documentary series The
Motorway where she was seen dealing with the pressure of lifethreatening
situations in the Highways England control room. When
she is not helping to save lives on the road she is making a name for
herself as one of only a handful of licensed women mead-makers in
the whole world.
As soon as she finishes a shift at the East Midlands Regional Control
Room in Nottingham, Alison heads off to the brewery she runs in the
grounds of the historic Welbeck Estate at Worksop.
Amongst the picturesque surroundings, nestled in the heart
of Sherwood Forest, she runs Apothecary Mead with partner
Chad Mierzwa using the traditional methods created
thousands of year’s ago.
Alison started brewing her own
mead five years ago. She said: “I had been to reenactments
and fairs and tried other mead and
wasn’t impressed by some of what was on offer.
I thought ‘I can do better than that’.”
Alison went out and bought a book on how
to make traditional mead - but admits her first
batches were ‘disgusting’ before they perfected
their recipes and produced a saleable
product.

can now be bought at
Bolsover Castle and as far
away as Glastonbury and
Whitby. Online sales of the
mead are international.
Alison has helped
found the British Meadmakers
Association,
a group of traditional
mead-makers from across
the country who want to
protect its traditions.

in recent years, with
sales reported to have
jumped 30 per cent last

is 8,000 years old. We are using

have really enjoyed writing the last few
I editorials, with a feeling the industry was
really going through a positive period. In my
last editorial reporting on the great work the
IVR has done over the past 37 years was great
to write. As I carried out my research, I began
to realise just how important the Institute was
to the Recovery Industry and more so today
than ever. Then reflecting back to edit 320 and
the piece I wrote on the Industries strategic
partnership agreement (SPA) with Highways
England, that renewed relationship started
with a meeting at last year’s Tow Show and
ERRI / PROF meeting with HE, working closely
with HE on the SPA, then bringing together
the industries stakeholder partners with ERRI
& PROF and the Trade Associations, LARO,
AVRO, RRRA and FoVRA to sign the SPA I felt
the industry was at a real high point with 2020
becoming a memorable year, memorable ‘yes’
but now for the wrong reasons.
Standstill
Then came the Coronavirus COVID – 19 and
pretty much brought the country to a standstill.
Initially I think everyone was looking at the TV
and listening to the news not really knowing
what to do, what the impact could or would be,
know body saw the devastating impact that was
just around the corner.
The last big industry get together was the
IVR AGM, if we knew then what we know now,
for sure we would have been discussing and
planning for the impact of Coronavirus while
we were all in the same room, so to speak. No,
we just made light of the way we greeted each
other, to a point we were still shaking hands
and laughing about the occasional fist punch or
shoe tap instead of a handshake, oh if only we
realized what was around the corner?
Where am I going with this? well you will all be
pleased to know that regular discussions around
the Coronavirus were being had by PROF and
it was soon realised there was a bigger need
than ever to be a joined-up industry and to
have many minds discussing how the industry
needed to respond for its network and how it
should approach this pandemic.
Wellbeing
The industry needed those key stakeholders
to communicate as one, the work providers
needed a joined-up approach to the questions
asked on the first contact call from the
customer. The independent operator needed
the confidence the customer was being
screened correctly as our roadside staff could
easily come into contact with a COVID – 19
infected person or a carrier of the virus. The
situation changed overnight and progressed

Not easy for an industry
recognized as an ‘Essential Service’

industry that has to recover the

just leave the passengers at the side
of the road. Clearly it was time to
involvement of the IVR to ensure a
recovery guide was produced that
complied with the social distancing
rule and also followed our industry’s
best practice guidelines.

Following a series of conference
calls arranged by Richard Goddard
chairman of PROF, with the calls
hosted by Ben Johnson of Call
Assist. On these conference calls
there was representatives from
PROF’s members, IVR, LARO, LV
Britannia, Call Assist, Alliance Global
Assistance, Tendo Consulting and a
guest invitation to Green Flag. This
PROF members group ensured the
network was joined-up with its key
stakeholder members discussing
operational challenges the COVID
– 19 pandemic had caused the
industry and jointly gathering
information and distributed it
amongst their network members.
Social distance rules
The one thing that was key for
your recovery technicians at the
roadside was how do we keep
to that social distance rule when
we are expected to recover all
passengers as well as the car? The
simplest way was to follow the
best practice guide and leave the
passengers in their car, easily said,
yes, but it is a best practice only
ever used for that rare disabled
passenger situation and not an
everyday occurrence.

Following lengthy discussions
within the PROF conference calls
the IVR produced the first draft
of the IVR COVID – 19 Rescue
Protocol, with version 2 now in
circulation having been distributed
directly by PROF’s members to
the independent network. It is
extremely important to consider
your own companies’ insurers when
adopting this temporary emergency
COVID – 19 protocol and to discuss
this with them as they may consider
this an additional risk.
With this document came some
additional general guidance for all
operators.
Give the casualty driver this card and ask them
to read the instructions on the reverse
Important: You must check the driver’s understanding of
this card and reiterate the key points
The casualty vehicle now must be winched

and remaining in their vehicle
Please read carefully. If you do not understand any points and have further questions, please ask the
technician before the recovery commences.
Please advise the attending recovery technician if you suffer with any other medical condition
i.e. epilepsy, or any condition that may affect you.
This guidance refers to the driver and all passengers of the broken down vehicle
1. Please wear your seatbelt.
2. Ensure that the steering lock is dis-engaged and that steering is free for the initial recovery
3. Gear lever in neutral (N) for automatics in the neutral position for manuals
4. Release handbrake when instructed to do so by technician
5. Turn off hazard lights and leave them off
6. When being winched onto the transporter assist the technician with steering
7. The recovery vehicle may be using its flashing beacons so, if necessary pull down your sun visor so
that you will not be dazzled
8. The technician will now ask that your keys are removed from the ignition or that they are made safe
9. Keep your doors unlocked at all times
10. Once loaded do not touch any of the vehicles hand or foot controls at all
Whilst being recovered, remain seated with your seat belt on, cross your arms and do not
touch any of the controls at all, your ignition, stereo and heater need to be off at all times.
If you feel worried or concerned at any time contact the recovery driver by one of the
means below.
If the recovery driver has a hands free set in his cab then it is advisable that you stay in
contact via the phone whilst the recovery takes place.

Best and safe working practices when recovering members of
the public and their vehicles.
Standardised questions for staff/drivers to ask.
l Keep the Club / Motoring organisation aware of your
intentions at all times.
l All passengers must sanitise hands.
l Sanitise all touch points to the disabled vehicle.
l Sanitise the keys and hand over on a tray or bucket, NOT
hand to hand.
l Keep a safe distance at all times (2m).
l Sanitise the recovery vehicle after every job.
l Drivers to change their clothing as soon as possible after
shift.
l Avoide using on-road services unless essential.
l Specialist Jobs, multiple staffing;
l Don’t share tooling and equipment.
l Keep a safe 2m distance from your colleagues.
Leave the passengers in the disabled vehicle?
This practice is not illegal, best practice guide says, this is
for a disabled person, we have to consider this to be the case,
as this is an ‘Infectious Desease’ and has no defind status
within our Best Practice Guide. Be careful as this could cause
more problems than it solves!

Office Based Staff
Office Critical Workers / Control / Accounts / Parking
l Where possible, work from home!
l Critical workers only – to be in the designated offices.
l Operate a ‘CLEAR DESK’ policy, thus keeping potential
transition to a minimum and for ease of sanitising.
l Avoid direct contact through office equipment and
stationary.
l ALL other staff are to be banned from entering.
l Adjust desk spaces for 2m distance.
l Sanitise surfaces including door handles etc every hour.
l Do not share computer keyboards, telephones, headsets
etc unless they are thoroughly sanitised after shift changes.
l Staff social facilities to be placed out of bounds including
kitchen areas
l Keep fresh air circulating by opening windows.
l Keep a safe distance during staff handover processes.
l Smokers, if they must – keep as safe 2m distance from each
other and dispose of responsibly.
In the Yard
Yard – Storage Collections / Deliveries / Goods-in
l Yard areas to be kept locked and out of bounds to
unauthorised staff or visitors.
l Sanitise regularly the gate entry touch points.
l Sanitise all touch points to the disabled vehicle.
l Sanitise the keys and hand over on a tray or bucket, NOT hand
to hand.
l Regularly sanitise all yard equipment, such as fork truck, lifts,
dolly’s, skates etc.
l If possible, limit the use of the fork truck to one person only.
l Sanitise all goods delivered.
Financial Guidance
The following information we hope will help everyone, so no
apologies made if you have already seen or know about all the
help that is available. If you’re looking to secure a payment
holiday on your finance? Here are details from the industries
two leading finance brokers Creative Funding Solutions and
Shawbrook Finance Ltd plus details of the government backed
scheme called Furlough, designed to pay your staff paid 80% of
their salary rather than you have to lay them off through a forced
redundancy situation, so what is Furlough and how does it work?
The term ‘Furlough’ is more commonly used with the military,
or a prison, ‘to grant a leave of absence or furlough’ a soldier
being furloughed or a furloughed prisoner. Or as the government
have used this term, to put a worker on furlough, to lay off a
worker for a brief or temporary period, in this case 3 month
from the 1st March, however this period may be extended.
The government announcement as follows, that under the
‘Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme’, all employers in the UK will
be able to access support to continue paying part of employees’
salaries who would otherwise have been laid off during the
ongoing crisis. As I’ve already described ‘Furloughed’ workers are
employees whose employers cannot cover staff costs due to in
this case the coronavirus, and as such they have been asked to
stop working but have not been made redundant.

paying part of their staff’s wages, this is to avoid redundancies
and so you can retain you staff. For a whole raft of reasons, but in
particular to avoid any fraudulent claims, there are expected to
be cross-checks between the applications for the Furlough grants
against the PAYE records for each employer. Employers wishing
to Furlough their staff will be required to make one claim for the
entire workforce and to keep a detailed record how many workers
are covered. There is a whole set of rules that must be adhered
to, hear are a few, but please research this fully by checking the
government website, details below.
● The employer can claim a grant of 80% of workers’ wages up to
£2,500 a month once they have been furloughed.
● The employees remain on the payroll deducting tax and national insurance
under the pay as you earn (PAYE) system.
● If employers want to top up pay levels, they can, but will not be able to claim for
more than 80 per cent of £3,125.
● The employer could choose to fund the differences between this payment and employee’s salary
but does not have to.
● The furloughed workers should not undertake work for their employer while they are furloughed.
● The scheme is available to all employees, no matter how big or small.
● The employer needs to get agreement from the worker to do this, unless it’s covered by a ‘lay
off’ clause in the employment contract.
I’ve mentioned payment holiday requests from your, then following may help.

of others around them, so we have made some changes to
our working practices in order to fulfil that duty of care.
We would like to offer you all some practical advice on
how to deal with your finances during this difficult period.
If you have loans running currently you may need to request
a payment holiday until some sort of normality resumes. If
we have arranged funding for you then contact us directly for
assistance via your account manager and they can guide you
as to how to request a payment holiday, which for the most
part has to be done directly with the funders. Some funders
were quick to offer blanket repayment holidays of 90 days for
those who make a request, other funders requested a myriad of
supporting information in order to get an arrangement over the
line. The latter do seem to have softened a little in the past few
days and again we are happy to support anyone in the industry
who is struggling to get the support they need, and no doubt

The government has launched several initiatives, CBILS being
one that we are hoping can really help businesses access the
funding they need:
The Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) is
now available:
What does the CBILS specifically provide
Up to £5m facility: A facility offered under the scheme will have a maximum value of £5m, available on terms of repayment up to
6 years.
80% Guarantee: The scheme offers a government-backed partial guarantee to the lender against the remaining balance of
the loan.
No guarantee fee for SMEs to access the scheme: No fee for smaller businesses. Lenders will pay a fee to access the scheme.
Interest and fees charged by the Government for a period of 12 months: the Government must make a Business Interruption
Provision to cover the first 12 months of interest rates and any lender-paying fees, meaning that smaller companies can benefit
from no upfront expenses and lower initial repayments.
Finance terms: Finance terms for term loans and asset financing facilities amount to up to six years. The terms will be up to
three years for overdrafts and invoice financing facilities.
Security: The scheme can, at the discretion of the lender, be used for unsecured loans for facilities of £250,000 or less. For
facilities over £250,000, the lender must create a shortage or lack of protection before businesses use CBILS. If the lender can
offer finance on normal commercial terms, they will do so without the need to make use of the scheme.

morning’s second emergency PROF
COVID-19 conference call, the
Federation hopes everyone involved
found it useful to have a joined up,
carefully measured approach, to ensure
that best practice goes across the board
during this critical stage of the COVID-19
outbreak.
As promised the Recovery Industry
protocol and the PROF Driver and
Essential Staff Guidance document are
enclosed and are now to be considered
the industry standard during this phase
of the COVID-19 outbreak. I’d like to
express special thanks to the IVR for its
vital technical input to the temporary
standards.
It should be noted that this is a
TEMPORARY MEASURE to enable our
drivers to move customers to a safe
place during the outbreak. Dynamic
risk assessments are always the best
tool in our toolkit and we encourage all
drivers to continue to be vigilant and
assess the risks for their own safety and
that of their customers and to heed
Government advice.
Also to be noted, PROF has involved
the insurance industry and some if the
industries underwriters, it is essential
you take all the necessary actions to
ensure your own insurer knows you are
operating to this temporary guidance
measure.
Finally, please ensure you supply your
roadside staff with a laminated copy of
the attached document (POLO10) COVID
19 Rescue Protocol, remembering to
always keep regularly sanitized.
The virus picture is fast moving and
to that end there will be a further PROF

Proposal for the maintenance
of Recovery and Rescue
Operations within the M25
The Background
Due to the extreme circumstances we
jointly find ourselves in as the Coronavirus
pandemic evolves, LARO is looking
for solutions to best aid the business
sustainability of its membership while
providing an around the clock service
to motoring organisation/club work
providers.
At present each recovery operator is
individually manning a 24-hour control
room with driver availability in return
for no guarantee of payment and
dramatically reduced volumes of work.
The Proposal
In order for the maximum number of
independent recovery companies to
survive the unforeseen financial hardship,
LARO proposes that between the hours
of 22.00 and 06.00 and to ease pressure
on individual businesses, to work to a
shared operator rota system to cover
breakdown recovery operations within
the M25. We propose to split the London
area into zones with each zone covered
on a rotational basis by operators
within these zones. We propose, as a
temporary measure, that the nearest on
call operator within that zone will cover
the work for all clubs, regardless if they
are currently appointed by that work
provider or not. This would be chargeable
at the same rates that the operator who
normally would be covering the job would
charge with the only difference being a
base to base mileage and no free miles.
The LARO membership includes the
key Vehicle Recovery Operators within
the M25 and this solution is open to
LARO members only. Subject to vetting,
non-members have the opportunity to
become a provisional member, prior to
approval and inclusion within this initiative
which can, if necessary, be fast-tracked.
The Solution
The work provider would in the normal
way send the job to the VRO that they
would normally allocate. If the VRO
is not a LARO member and operating
independently and outside of this
initiative, they would either accept or
refuse the job in the normal way. If refused, the work provider would then send the job
to the next VRO, who if a LARO member but working 24 hours would again either accept
or refuse the job.
If a LARO VRO is not on rota, he/she would change their Night Control Option to ‘ANS
divert’ and the job would automatically be forwarded to the LARO appointed Control
Room ANS node that he/she inputs as the non-rota VRO closes at 22.00 hours. The nonrota
VRO is left with an audit trail and can see any jobs that they have missed while not
being open.
The LARO Control Room would then send the job to the nearest on shift VRO with
a message saying who the work provider is and the job number. Any job messaging or

equests for further charges would be via the LARO Control
Room in order to keep a transparent audit trail.
The Cost
The dealing VRO would invoice the job directly to the work
provider. Additionally, the LARO Control Room would raise a
handling charge invoice for of £30 +VAT per job irrespective
of the amount of telephone calls or job messaging required
that the work provider would pay.
The Quality Control
For accountability and quality assurance, all LARO members
are ISO 9001 and PAS 43 accredited as a requirement of
LARO membership.
The Summary
LARO very much hopes that this initiative is supported by
the motoring organisation work providers which will provide
a service to the customer in addition to saving jobs and help
recovery operators’ financially. We have summarised the
benefits below:

l Work providers still able to supply a quality service
l Work providers continue to send work to their contracted
operator, the LARO control arrangements only apply if the
operator sets Apex Night Control Node to LARO
l Independent network reduces overhead and operating

The Conclusion
This scheme can go live within 3 working days of motoring
organisation approval and in order to ensure continued
recovery and rescue operations within the M25, would
encourage that this is considered as soon as possible.

Morning Bruce, thanks for taking time to talk to us today, all

Very busy thanks Paul. Obviously we’re highly aware of the virus
and how that’s affecting our guys on the road and customers, we’ve
just moved premises and looking at electric vehicle charging.
A busy time for AFF – let’s start with an easy one, what was your
first car?
A Peugeot 305 SR. I remember the first thing I did was drive on
the A3 at midnight at 95mph, I think I can admit to that that now. I
don’t think there is any more remaining, they’ve all rotted away!
I was more of a BMX man myself. You’ve got a rare afternoon to
yourself – what do you do?
Probably find a really nice restaurant that serves all afternoon
and order oysters, steak tartare and a bottle of Bordeaux Claret.
Very nice – and when you get home what will you be watching
on TV.
Well it won’t be my choice; my other half will have Coronation
Street on. I’ve had to watch it for several years so I’m kind of familiar
with the characters - I never thought that would happen in my
lifetime.

Calling out mobile phone
users isn’t fruitless...
Firstly I make no apology for revisiting this issue of mobile
phones being used while driving, after stiffer penalties I still
see phones being used at the wheel at almost every set of traffic
lights or roundabout. Let’s look at the true facts.
There is no doubt that health and safety combined with nanny
state thinking are in many cases just making our lives a joke. The
problem seems to be that people cannot always make a clear
judgement, so everything has to be black or white and, to be on
the safe side, let’s make it all black.
We have all heard about the kids supposedly stopped from
playing conkers and most people can come up with a similar
story of something just as simple and equally as stupid.
So it should come as no surprise when I read about a young
lady parked at a set of traffic lights and eating a banana, who
then found herself with three points and a £60 fine. You have to
ask, where it has all gone wrong; especially as I would not have
been at all surprised if, while the police officer was booking
this young lady for not having any proper control of her vehicle,
there would be people driving passed using their mobile phones.
Probably trying to adjust the radio station or sat-nav and possibly
trying to put a quote on social media from a hand held phone.
Since people have started going around killing other people
while using a mobile phone, it now appears that anybody who
is not firmly grasping the steering wheel with two hands is
committing an offence, or at least that is how it seems. On a
danger scale of one to ten, where does a banana fit in? I would
think about 0 of 10.
Let’s remember that since people have been driving, lorry
drivers in particular have always enjoyed a bacon sandwich
on the move, despite for most of that time not having power
steering, a synchromesh gearbox and not even good quality
brakes. We all know that the only danger this presented was to
themselves in the sense that they became fat and overweight
with eating unhealthy food and then finished up with diabetes.
But cause an accident by eating? I have never even heard of it.
But, fast forward to the mobile phone and here we have a
different animal. Not just a mobile phone but a sat-nav set on
the move and there is texting and communicating on social
media. And let us not forget we have all been guilty at one point
or another of using a mobile phone on the move, but I hope, like
myself, people have now realised how dangerous and antisocial
it is and have discontinued the practice. Whether you drive with
one hand or two, is not the issue and never has been.
As a former rally driver when cars were simple, I have covered
many miles of special stages at a good speed and because of
the need to change gear every few yards, use a handbrake from
time to time and then have to worry about a few other things.
Sometimes 40% of the route would be covered with just one
hand on the wheel: then perhaps I would take my hand off the
gear lever and on to a Mars Bar after the stage was complete.
But the big difference is that at no time did I have any mental
distractions.
The big difference between using a mobile phone and eating
a banana, the banana would not bring on a heated argument; a
banana cannot tell you that if you don’t get your backside home,
your dinner will be in the dog, or some other life crisis that
makes it impossible to concentrate and drive safely.
I believe that texting and social media are even more
dangerous because they take up so much mental energy and
leave none for driving. There are even a few other pastimes that
are not good for driving and concentrating: firing up a cigarette
cannot be that safe. I was also unfortunate enough to have a
good friend of the family whose child in a rear baby seat for
some reason became unsettled and the Mum turned round out
of motherly love to see what was wrong, veered across the road
and caused a double fatal accident.
Now that is a difficult one to deal with, but it reinforces how
people are distracted and are not in control of their vehicle
when they are in contact with another human by person, by
phone or by text, which also brings into question hands-free
systems. If their only crime is to be in contact with a banana,
they are hardly going to finish up in a road accident because they
are still in complete control of their car.
There seems to be something about these police officers
that are trying to make a statement with a case like the banana;
maybe they are not getting out enough. I have also heard of
someone who had been fined for eating an apple. By God!
These fruits are hazardous! But I have never heard of anyone
being fined for lighting a cigarette, setting a sat nav, or one or
two other things that are a bit marginal. Whatever happened
to the police officer who would issue a firm dressing down
for such a minor offence thereby going a long way to avoiding
repeat offending? I suppose being given a good bollocking at the
roadside is now a breach of the driver’s human rights and it’s the
police officer that would get censured.
I have to point out that I am not suggesting everybody should
push on and have lunch on the move, but we need to realise if
the difference between safe and dangerous driving is one hand
on a banana or apple - or even a firm pear - then that driver
should not be on the road in the first place.
Now, let’s go to the other end of the scale and prove we are
not ‘jobsworths’. But better still; let’s have a campaign to stop
people using mobile phones in vehicles. I would love to get
something going where people blow their horns continually
when they see somebody using a phone. So easy to do and so
effective, can you imagine the racket in a town centre and the
embarrassment of people on their phones: and maybe then we
will start to save lives, without affecting fruit sales.
We have our move over campaign, so how about trying to get
on the case of these thousands of idiots who still have no regard
for the way they continue to use their phone on the move.
People just don’t like to be caught out.

This year’s Tow Show is going ahead as
planned at the end of September, and we will keep in close

The timescale for the 2020 regional roadshows scheduled for May

When Mick Jennings got in touch with Boniface to enquire
about more new vehicles to help him continue to carry
out his fleet regeneration programme, they were again only too
happy to help.
The third of many new vehicles to come is this 3.5T
Champion slide bed mounted on an Iveco Daily 70c and
finished in LJ’s stand out livery.
The Champion Slidebed is a well-established product
recognised and used by professional operators all over the
UK and throughout Europe. Strong, reliable and extremely
dependable the Champion has been tried and tested over the
years which is why customers like LJ’s choose the product over
others in the marketplace.
With the shovel tail design incorporated into the side raves
the Champion bed provides a good loading angle and makes
loading cars with low skirts or spoilers easier.
The galvanised sub frame and tilt frame provide prolonged
life expectancy of the equipment and the knife edge bed
rollers help to protect the bed and the road surface when
loading and unloading vehicles.
As with all Boniface slide bed products, there are numerous
options available to customise the equipment to your exact
requirements. This particular LJ vehicle has a hooped flyer
with 6 LED marker lights, a 1.6m LED Beacon with stop, tail and
turn repeaters mounted onto it, 2 pairs of LED work lights, 3 x

sliding adjustment, 1.2T second car lift with fold over wheel
grids and strobes mounted in the front grill.

A time for survival
AS the whole world braces for the perceived uncertainty we
are facing with coronavirus spreading globally and taking
lives daily, it is clear that we as a country must adjust and be
prepared to help each other, there have been many global
threats across the years that have come and gone, we don’t
know as of yet how bad this will get the government are clearly
doing everything they can.
Key workers
the recovery industry is maintaining support by ensuring
that as part of the transport industry we are keeping the road
network clear of obstructions. One thing is certain the recovery
industry is a key service to the transport industry and the great
British motoring public, but we are going to be faced with very
difficult times just like most other businesses.
The government guidelines are clear;

REDUCE TRAVEL
MINIMISE YOURSELF TO EXPOSURE
Training
Training may be cancelled due to personal proximity and
financial issues, but operators should understand that company
training is a must, now more than ever. By that we mean, toolbox
talks and briefings. It is now more vital than ever that those
attending vehicles follow process, this will help protect them,
the customer and the public, but also it will help protect their
families when they get home.
Operators need to assess their operation for risk, document
it, and inform staff, not just once but at the start of each task,
yes, they will get fed up with it, but at least they will not be in any
doubt about their responsibilities and process. Knowing how to
best deal with the threat of corona when it comes to staff and
how to protect them and our customers is vital. But with the
dramatic downturn in work load I fear there is a great threat to
companies and operators themselves.
Some companies with low overheads may fare better than
others, but it matters not if you’re a one-man operator or a large
multi-million-pound company, the reality is no one is protected
financially, there will sadly be many companies in the coming
months ahead that will have to shut the doors. I’m already aware
of three operators that have had to cease trading in the last 72
hours. Sad times; the time, effort and financial investment lost,
not just the loss of the business, the impact on families that
are no longer able to benefit from the rewards of that business.
The government has released initial details on assistance for
business and the self-employed which will develop over the
coming days.
The Government has granted a six-month extension for all
MOTs expiring 30 March and beyond providing they are kept in
a roadworthy condition and meet the MOT standard. Failure to
do so leaves you subject to prosecution. Police and government
agencies have the powers to issue on the spot fines and prohibit
the use of the vehicle and trailer if present.
Should a vehicle be involved in an RTA and defects are found
this may go against you as an owner/driver. Prohibition rules still
stand, and if issued may require a full MOT test to remove it and
if a trailer is involved will render them both unroadworthy. Keep
all paperwork up to date ensuring you stay legal. Exemption
does not give the right to use a defective vehicle on a public
highway and put people’s lives at risk, road safety is paramount.
Cancellation and postponement of 2020 events
The COVID-19 outbreak has had an enormous impact on
cancellation and postponement of 2020 events. Sadly, we have
had to pull this year’s RRRA Annual Members Show due to be
held on the weekend of 9-10 May this is due to the cancellation
of the Nottinghamshire Show and to comply with the current
government guidelines on social gatherings and distancing.
The RRRA had a packed calendar of meetings and events
which have pretty much all been cancelled; however, we have
been holding our council meetings via video conferencing
and the office phone has been manned seven days a week to
provide support to all of our members during these uncertain
times. Fingers crossed the Tow Show in Telford due to be held
on late September will still be able to go ahead and all this
infection we will be able to put behind us.
We want our members to take the opportunity to ask
questions, voice any concerns and opinions they may have, so
tell the RRRA council, email us work with us.
It will be over eventually, and then we must work together for
the future, united in our efforts to put the industry back on the
road to success.

Death of David Marks, MD of Stafford-based

David Marks.
The 45-strong team at GRG Public
Resources Ltd. has been informed and
Directors stress that the successful
company will continue to grow.
David Marks joined GRG Public
Resources, based on the Staffordshire
Technology Park, Stafford, as Managing
Director in 2003, having previously run
successful companies across the West
Midlands.
He led a successful management buyout
of the company in 2014, together with
fellow Director, John Marks, David’s son.
Fellow Director Bruce Ridley said:
“David was 72, and he died of a sudden
heart attack. He hadn’t been unwell and
had been in the office just the day before.
Whilst he had taken a more strategic
background role recently at GRG, not
dealing with day-to-day issues, he was still
a force to be reckoned with in business,
having started his first company in 1968.
“David will be succeeded as Managing
Director by John, his son. His death was
a shock and he will be missed by all, but
we gathered the staff together at the
start of the week to let them know and to
impress on everyone that the Directors
will continue to build the business; it’s
business as usual.

Way up in the very North East of Scotland in
Aberdeen you will find SS Walker Recovery.
SS Walker at the Richmond Garage handles

take much longer than might be expected. For example, the
road from here to Inverness is 40mph all the way with no dual
carriageways, so that’s over 100 miles at 40 mph.
“The difficult terrain means that some of the jobs that
look like they should take, in theory, a couple of hours will, in
practice, take twice that long and an apparently easy job could
take an entire eight hours to complete.”
He pointed out that unlike some operators he has the correct
equipment to do the work and is a PAS43 recovery operator.

set or 7617 for the hammer separately)
has a multitude of uses but is primarily
designed for popping in trim clips; the
handle is also a neat and flexible pry-bar,
useful for removing trim clips.
The hammer is light-weight, and
175mm in length. If you buy the hammer
on its own it’s supplied with a soft head
and a hard head. If you buy the full set,
you get six different heads: copper,
rubber, aluminium and steel rounded
heads, and copper and plastic flat
heads. This makes it also ideal for basic
panel beating tasks, the steel head for
steel panel work, and the alloy head for
bare alloy panel work (ensuring no steel
contamination on the alloy). The heads
are easily and quickly interchangeable, so
can always use the correct head for the
