NEWS
The Motor Ombudsman
welcomes Warranty First to its
Vehicle Warranty Products Code
l Warranty First has gained accreditation to The Motor Ombudsman’s comprehensive
Motor Industry Code of Practice for Vehicle Warranty Products
l The Peterborough-based organisation is the second vehicle warranty provider to join the
Code in 2023, bringing the total number of accredited businesses to 18 – the largest ever portfolio
since the Code launched in 2009
l The objective of the long-established Code of Practice is to provide guidelines for the delivery of high
industry standards in the administration and provision of extended warranties to vehicle owners
l Accreditation offers several benefits to Warranty First, including access to The Motor Ombudsman’s
automotive-specific Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) service, and its exclusive Code committee
and industry insight meetings
The Motor Ombudsman, the
Ombudsman dedicated to the
automotive sector, is pleased to
welcome Warranty First to its long-established
Chartered Trading Standards Institute
(CTSI)- approved Motor Industry Code of
Practice for Vehicle Warranty Products. The
Peterborough-based organisation, which
this year, celebrates a decade of providing
extended warranties to motorists, is the
second business to join the Code so far in
2023. With 18 organisations now adhering to
the Code, this is the largest ever number to
be accredited at any one time, meaning this
portfolio of businesses today covers around
three-quarters of the industry’s major
providers.
Launched in 2009, the principal objective
of The Motor Ombudsman’s comprehensive
Vehicle Warranty Products Code is to drive
up standards beyond those required by
law when consumers take out an extended
warranty for a vehicle, and make a claim
should a failure arise during ownership.
NEWS
By adhering to the Code of Practice,
Warranty First is showcasing their
commitment to consumers that they
are following best practice and going
above and beyond their legal obligations
to deliver the highest standards in the
provision and administration of their
warranty products.
As part of their accreditation, warranty
providers commit to following 60 different
guidelines laid down by the Code of
Practice, which cover areas, such as the
publishing of clear, concise, jargon-free
and accurate communications, product
literature and advertising, offering tailored
advice and information to vehicle owners
according to their requirements, having an
in-house complaints process which allows
the swift and fair resolution of customer
disputes, and directing consumers to The
Motor Ombudsman should complaints not
be resolved between the two parties in
the first instance.
The benefits of calling on expert
assistance from The Motor Ombudsman’s
automotive industry-specific Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) service, is that
it is highly experienced in helping to bring
disputes to a close in an impartial setting,
and looks to preserve a positive long-term
business-consumer relationship.
Furthermore, another significant
advantage of engaging in The Motor
Ombudsman’s ADR process is that it is
completely free of charge for consumers.
As part of their accreditation, Warranty
First will equally be able to take advantage
of other exclusive opportunities,
namely the ability to attend The Motor
Ombudsman’s quarterly Code committee
and industry insight meetings, exclusive
webinars and events, and to be profiled on
Warranty First will also
be eligible to be nominated by policy
Motor Ombudsman Customer Service
Star Awards available in the annual
competition, which provide public
recognition of those businesses that have
gone above and beyond the call of duty in
the eyes of consumers.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman
and Managing Director of the Motor
Ombudsman, said: “We are delighted to
welcome Warranty First to our largest ever
Vehicle Warranty Products Code portfolio,
which has continued to go from strength
to strength, as we have gone through the
year. Warranty First is a highly- regarded
business by consumers, and carries a
positive industry reputation. We are
therefore very pleased to have them on
board, and look forward to working closely
with them as a valued addition to our
Code of Practice.”
Charlie Whiston, Director at Warranty
First, added: “Accreditation to The Motor
Ombudsman reflects our core philosophy
of putting the customer at the heart of
everything that we do, and that we strive
to ensure complete satisfaction at every
touchpoint in their journey with us. Being
a part of such a respected automotive
authority, such as The Motor Ombudsman,
puts our business in the spotlight as
being a beacon of best practice, and one
that gives customers peace of mind that
they have free-of-charge access to an
impartial and fair channel to support the
resolution of any concerns that we cannot
bring to a swift and mutually-agreeable
conclusion in-house.”
OPINION
GET A FREE TV
WHEN YOU BUY
ANY PIZZA
*Terms & conditions may apply.
*I hate reading that sentence, I feel it gives someone
the right to deliberately mislead.
By Onkar Chahal
Sounds good, right? But that only applies to pizza’s bought
on the fourth Sunday of every other month. On a full moon.
Of any odd numbered year. Delivery orders not included.
Neither is the power lead.
Sounded good, but when you delve further it’s not really that
good, is it?
I bought a car that needed two tyres so I called my local tyre
depot & made enquiries into price & availability. Bridgestone
were running an offer of an Amazon voucher for any pair bought.
I bought two tyres, gave my details & waited for the voucher.
Except there wasn’t one. Retail sales only & my invoice had a
business address. A bit of email back & forth with customer
services & I eventually received my voucher for £20. Bingo!
The point is this, why have T&C’s in the first place? Did I buy two
tyres? Yes. Here’s the voucher. Simple. In the reply I was told they
were excluding fleet sales & company car drivers from the offer.
But tyre’s sold are tyre’s sold, right?
Years ago I ran a summer offer for an air conditioning service
for £35. The check was quick, easy & providing it passed, the
refill was cheap as we were predominately recycling their old gas
anyway. The gas bottle was about £60 & I could get 12-15 jobs
from a tank. I didn’t feel the need for T&C’s and they were literally
queuing up outside.
Then the Big Japanese import came in, with its twin a/c system.
Great, there goes any profit from that job! The owner knew it had
a twin system & that he was saving money, that’s why he brought
it in to me clutching the voucher as if his life depended upon it!
There were two ways I could have handled this situation,
honour the offer or decline it, I decided to just get on with the
job. I pulled a load of gas out of his system, held the vac for 30
minutes & fired it back in, probably using no more of my gas than
a usual large saloon would have needed. Luckily the system was
in good working order & I didn’t need to fill it from empty, I rolled
the dice & it went my way. Customer was happy as he felt he beat
the system & I was happy as it didn’t cost me much more than a
regular job. The following day he brought his wife’s car in & sent
3 other customers to me over the next few days. My summer
promotion worked with no T&C’s, I made money & built my
customer base.
Whilst at university my daughter worked for a large fashion
chain during the summer & the store held a staff competition,
whoever opened the most credit accounts by the end of the
month won £100. She won, but when she asked for the money the
manager told her that she missed the target.
What target? Turns out he omitted to tell her to she had to
open more than 100 to get it. Hold the phones, first it was who
sold the most, now it’s a minimum number? That’s not cricket,
so the next month she sold……none. Couldn’t be bothered.
Disenchanted, disengaged, call it what you will. I still buy tyres,
just not Bridgestone. A bit harsh? Probably, but like I said I didn’t
appreciate having to email them.
For me,T&C’s just don’t work. Keep it simple. Keep it honest.
NEWS
EASY2RECRUIT WILL CONNECT GARAGES
WITH SKILLED WORKERS
The employment agency helps companies find and hire
workers from around the world.
On a humid day in India, Ambi Singh’s vehicle sputtered
to a stop in the middle of nowhere. As the sun cast long
shadows, he found himself at a franchised dealership
garage. There, he encountered a technician whose expertise
was nothing short of wizardry. Watching the mechanic, a thought
struck him: “Why isn’t this talent in the UK, working in my garage?”
The dilemma of talent shortage in the UK’s garage sector is
not new. The aisles of trade shows, corners of coffee shops, and
discussions at industry conferences all echo concerns about the
diminishing pool of skilled technicians. For Ambi, associated with
the award-winning Binley Woods Service Centres, that day in India
was about more than just identifying the problem—it was about
finding a solution.
Upon his return to the UK, fuelled by that experience and by
industry concerns, Ambi began his research. His eureka moment
came upon discovering a government initiative allowing businesses
to sponsor overseas skilled workers, thus introducing them to the
UK’s automotive arena. With this, Ambi did more than just fulfil his
own garage’s talent pool; he identified an opportunity to benefit
the entire industry.
Enter Easy2recruit: A venture stemming from Ambi’s personal
journey and the broader industry needs. It promises to connect
UK garages with a treasure trove of international talent, turning the
narrative of a skills shortage into history.
But Ambi’s vision goes beyond mere recruitment. It’s a
movement. He invites garages across the UK to look beyond local
talent, to envision a global stage where the best technicians
enhance service standards, boost productivity and create a happy
workforce.
Ambi concludes: “We pride ourselves on being independent,
and so do our colleagues. To sustain this, the industry must adapt
and recognise the non-traditional avenues for top talent. Our
goal is to provide a sustainable environment for both our staff and
customers. Easy2recruit can help independent garages achieve
this by sourcing the best talent for their businesses from UAE, India
and beyond.”
As another day draws to a close, the industry stands poised
for change. With ventures like Easy2recruit, the narrative is
evolving, and the future shines bright. It’s astonishing to think
that sometimes, all it takes is a car breakdown in a distant land to
redirect the path of an entire industry.
solution to fill your workshops with skilled vehicle technicians, dive
PRODUCTS
The significance
of your choice of
cleaning wipes
Across the UK automotive industry, mechanics are constantly
mopping up spills, leaks and dirty smudges of liquid – but at what
cost? Using disposable industrial cleaning cloths or blue roll for
this purpose is both economically and environmentally expensive.
Mewa UK Managing Director Günes Yenen looks at the issue and
shares how you can operate more sustainably and efficiently.
Environmental considerations in
cleaning practices
The automotive sector is diligently
striving to deliver on corporate social
responsibility (CSR) commitments and to
minimise its ecological footprint. A study
by the CapGemini Research Institute,
The Automotive Industry in the Era of
Sustainability, says sustainability is now a
strategic priority for the industry and ranks
promoting a circular economy as a top
priority.1
Given the nature of garage workshops,
they can be dirty and greasy environments
with oils, fluids and solvents used, meaning
leaks and spills are commonplace. Garages
typically use single use wipes or disposable
blue paper roll to mop-up such spills and
to clean parts as they are disassembled,
repaired and refitted. Like the use of
any disposable product, it is inherently
wasteful and this practice has a significant
environmental impact.
A study by the climate-neutral consulting
firm, ClimatePartner has shown the enormous
ecological footprint of disposable cleaning
cloths compared to reusable textile cloths.
It compared our Mewatex wipe with a 100%
cellulose paper towel and a non-woven
cloth made of 70% cellulose and 30%
polypropylene.
The study looked at water and energy
consumption, as well as CO2 emissions
during the manufacture [and use] of both
types of wipes. The results showed significant
differences, up to 40 times more, in the
resources used to remove 1kg of dirt.
Among the results it was found that the
total amount of water consumed when using
a 100% disposable paper towel is 188,500
litres, compared to just 4,538 litres for the
reusable wipe.
The energy consumption during production
was also clearly contrasting; the reusable
cloth consumes nearly three times less
energy than a disposable cloth with 87 kWh
compared to 31 kWh for a reusable cloth.
In terms of greenhouse gas emissions
generated, disposable wipes cause between
2.8 and 5 times more pollution than
reusable cloths: 33.3 and 61.6 kg of CO2
compared to 11.9 kg of CO2.
Also striking was the difference in the
amount of textile needed to make the
cloths. The amount of textile used in a
disposable paper-based cloth is 25.5
kg compared to just 0.5 kg for a Mewa
cloth that has a cleaning life of up to 50
applications.
Cost and time efficiencies
Paper roll and single use wipes or rags
aren’t really all that efficient at absorbing
liquids. As an example, a Mewa wipe can
absorb up to 250% of its own weight.
Because of the superior absorbency, they
lead to quicker cleaning. The efficiency
gain compared to disposable paper roll is
up to 35%. Our oil trapping mats further
streamline processes eliminating the need
for labour intensive tasks like emptying drip
trays and applying and removing materials
such as sand and degreasing.
Furthermore, any cleaning cloths and
paper wipes soaked with oil and other
industrial fluids are potentially classified
as ‘absolute hazardous’ entries on the
Waste Framework Directive’s ‘List of Waste’
document. They therefore must be safely
stored before being disposed of by an
accredited hazardous wastes contractor.
Increasing workshops are moving away
from the traditional cleaning wipes model.
Instead they are engaging third-party
suppliers for high-quality re-usable wipes
and mats. Once used, these products
are then collected, laundered in an
environmentally friendly way and returned
for re-use.
This also eliminates the need to manage
the purchase, delivery, storage and disposal
of single-use materials, not to mention the
associated wasteful packaging. The service
also alleviates the burden and cost of
hazardous waste storage and disposal from
companies, reducing costs as well as
mitigating potential health and safety fines.
As such security of supply is guaranteed
meaning you will always have wipes to hand
to mop up spills promptly to reduce the risk
of exposure to hazardous liquids and reduce
the risk of slips and trips.
Reduce waste
In addition to the conservation of
resources and emissions, there are other
environmental benefits of using such a
service. Because of their reusability, we
estimate that the use of our wipes by our
customers prevents thousands of tonnes of
industrial waste from being created.
Switching to wipes that are collected,
washed and inspected under a full-service
leasing model means that the supplier
takes responsibility for their environmental
impact and presents small and large
companies with an easy way to operate in
the circular economy.
Increasingly customers, investors and
employees want to do business with and
work for greener companies2 and when
two-thirds3 of the average company’s
environmental, social, and governance
footprint lies with suppliers, it makes sense
to work with partners who can help you be
greener.
GSF Car Parts HR Director Jo Warren said: “It was such a
privilege for our team to play a part in bringing these amazing
experiences to life for the young people supported by Speed Of
Sight and Whizz Kidz.
“We encourage our team members to make use of GSF’s paid
volunteering scheme and this was the perfect opportunity for it.
The feedback we received from our team about the event was
brilliant, with everyone bowled over by how heartwarming, eyeopening
and moving the experience was for them.
“The work that Speed Of Sight does with people of all ages is
fantastic and as a national business of passionate people across
the UK, the GSF team is proud to be a part of this family.”
Fifteen GSF volunteers from its branches and support teams
across the north west and the midlands helped Speed Of Sight to
run the day. The team mucked in on a range of jobs including track
marshalling, greeting, helping participants into vehicles, manning
fun fair stands, certificate presentations and more.
The young people, ranging from age eight to 26, had the
opportunity to get behind the wheel and drive themselves, with
trained professionals with them at all times, for an unforgettable
experience.
Speed Of Sight Co-Founder John Galloway said: “We were
thrilled to welcome the staff from
GSF to our track day. They were a
great help and so positive about us
and the charity.
without damage, or when fully seized into the cylinder head they
can still be removed in stages. Pull spindles, slide hammer and
thread tapping tools extract the pieces left behind when the
injectors break.
“With injector problems on the EcoBlue engines, we’ll charge
a fraction of what the dealer does because they can’t usually get
these injectors out,” said Adam.
Pichler’s hydraulic wheel bearing removal kit is another go-to
tool at Blue Oval. It includes a 22 ton hydraulic cylinder which can
also be used for the removal of seized drive shafts, bushes and ball
joints – all while still on the vehicle.
“You might expect the drive shaft to pull out of the hub after
you’ve removed the drive shaft nut but that’s not always the case,”
said Adam. “We can now push the drive shaft out on the car in a
couple of minutes and it’s job done.
“Without that kit you can only get that drive shaft off by
removing the whole hub and trying to put it in a press and you’ll
probably destroy something getting it apart.”
Adam describes business as “relentless” and is looking forward
to expanding his workshop in the coming weeks. The move will see
him go from two to five ramps and an additional technician will
bring the total number of employees to four.
NEWS
The aftermarket
needs an update!
“Good data now a defining factor in determining
business success,” says Elcome
Automotive data and cataloguing specialist, Elcome, is calling
on the aftermarket to update its data or risk losing business
to the main dealer networks.
The company, home to the ONCE online cataloguing platform
that ensures accurate cataloguing and application data, is
responding to an automotive survey carried out by garage
management system Garage Hive, which found that parts data
and the delivery of the right part, first time was increasingly
important for garages. As a consequence, the survey identified
that more garages were turning to main dealers for supply of the
correct parts.
In further analysis carried out by Elcome on aftermarket
work-shop look-up systems, the company found more than 100
aftermarket brands had not updated their parts data for over a
year.
TMD Friction’s premium aftermarket braking
brand Textar celebrated its 110th anniversary this
July, marking an impressive milestone of more
than a century’s supply of high-end braking
products.
Oliver Haywood, Head of Sales & Marketing at Elcome
Good product data is proving to be the bedrock of modern
automotive businesses, who benefit from increased efficiency,
customer satisfaction, faster new to range introductions and
increased revenue overall.
Since 1999, Elcome has made it easier for aftermarket
businesses to provide accurate and consistent data to multiple
market channels including data standards TecDoc, MAM, and ACES
and online channels such as eBay and Amazon.
With a range of features available, users can merge vehicle data
with parts information, output for cataloguing and view numerous
market trends, providing total control and saving time.
Oliver Haywood, Head of Sales & Marketing at Elcome, says: “In
a rapidly evolving sector, having accurate up to date information
on your products and services is key to good customer service
and has an impact throughout the entire supply chain, from
manufacturer to garage.
“Today, business investment equates to a competitive
advantage and good product data management also means
business are best placed to make effective decisions and identify
trends within their organisation.”
Founded in 1913, Textar has been a staple for premium
braking quality, optimum safety and stopping performance.
Having established itself in continental Europe following
the start of production in 1934, the brand became the first
German braking brand to supply as original equipment, and in
the 1950s worked with Mercedes-Benz to develop brakes for
racing in Formula One.
Across its 110-year legacy, Textar has solidified a strong
heritage in braking, with original equipment applications of its
friction material ranging from the first passenger cars to modern
supercars such as the Bugatti Veyron.
Scott Irwin MIMI, head of technical training at TMD Friction
IAM, said: “Reaching the milestone of 110 years is a real
accomplishment but looking back at the quality of the product
and longevity of the brand it’s easy to see how Textar has lasted
the course.
“Textar continues to deliver high performance, optimum
safety and driver confidence, and backs this up by engaging
with the aftermarket to teach best practice for fitment. We’re
grateful to all our customers who have worked with us on
training and developing a quality portfolio. Textar is very proud of
its history and looks forward to the next 110 years!”
Textar’s rich history has seen success both on the road, and
on the track. Dating back to 1955, British racing driver Stirling
Moss won his first British Formula One Grand Prix in a Mercedes-
Benz W196 (Silver Arrow) fitted with Textar brake linings. Almost
70 years later, Textar brake equipment can be found on racing
trucks, in the hands of Newell and Wright Motorsport.
Customers can be assured of high-end braking quality with
Textar products, with each new product development going
through extensive testing and quality assurance over a threeyear
development cycle before being released.
Optimum safety and a long service life are the qualities
reflected in all Textar products. Knowledge gained from its
original equipment development is cascaded to its aftermarket
product lines, so customers know they’re getting the very best.
Technicians and workshops can find out more about the latest
TRAINING
AvailableCar
workshops
gain with
structured
Delphi training
Used car supermarket group, AvailableCar has embarked on a continual development
programme with Delphi, investing in the upskilling of its workshop technicians as the vehicles
it processes continue to get ever-more advanced.
AvailableCar first opened its doors in 2002 at Castle Donington,
East Midlands. Today the family-run business operates across
four sites, with some 90 technicians playing a key role in the
success of the group.
“Our sole objective is to make the customer experience worldclass
and completely hassle-free,” said Michael Hitchcock, Head of
Technical and Training at AvailableCar. “Our technicians are massively
important to the overall success of the business.”
The dealership group sells hundreds of vehicles a week, each one
having been processed through its workshops with all the necessary
servicing and repairs completed. Changing market conditions has
seen the nature of these jobs evolve over the years.
“When we first opened, we thought we’d never do timing belts
or clutches,” said Michael. “They’re now commonplace alongside
many other advanced diagnostic and repair jobs, which we’re now
able to complete in-house thanks to this training investment. We’re
currently doing our first-ever hybrid engine change, which is a big
milestone.”
Six members of staff have already achieved Master Technician
status through Delphi’s tailored training with many more currently
on route for IMI qualification. Other accredited Delphi training
paths include Service Technician and Diagnostic Technician, with
AvailableCar also benefitting from Delphi’s bespoke training routes
made possible thanks to its expert trainers.
“This training is giving us much more than the obvious skills and
improved workshop efficiencies,” said Michael. “I’ve had staff come
up and thank me for the training. Our technicians feel valued and
motivated, and we’re rewarding their increased skillset with pay rises
too.”
Andrew Rayner is the latest AvailableCar employee to qualify as
a Master Technician. Petrol and Diesel Management, Exhaust After
Treatment, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Hybrid
Electric Vehicle modules were among his favourite modules covered.
“It’s been a really great journey,” said Andrew. “All of the trainers
are spot-on, easy to get on with and very knowledgeable. Things like
EVs, they’re scary if you don’t know what you’re doing but they’ve
given me the confidence to do these jobs.”
Since enrolling on the development programme, all four
AvailableCar workshops have reported significant improvements in
performance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
“AvailableCar is a widely recognised brand, renowned for its high
standards,” said Luke Garratt, UK Technical Services Manager at
Delphi. “We’re delighted to be able to help their technicians maintain
these standards through our comprehension training offering, and
thrilled to see them achieve those gains when it comes to first-time
fixes, vehicle turnaround time and staff retention.”
Lubricant
products
quarantined
and removed
from sale
following VLS
investigations
As a mechanic, you must have confidence that the lubricant
products you use in your customers’ vehicles are fit for
purpose and really can deliver what they claim. So it’s vital
that organisations like the Verification of Lubricant Specifications
(VLS) continue to investigate product complaints and uphold
standards in the industry.
VLS has recently brought several product complaints to a
conclusion, resulting in lubricants being quarantined and removed
from sale to protect mechanics and motorists.
Case VLS010183 concerned a complaint regarding Westway
Lubricants 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Oil about the product’s
compliance with SAE J306 regarding low temperature properties
and its claim to meet MB 235.8.
VLS independently procured a sample of the product within
the UK and tested it for low temperature properties against ASTM
D2983. The test results demonstrated that the product did not
comply with the SAE 75W specification detailed in the SAE J306
standard, as it turned solid before reaching -40 °C.
In response to the investigation, Westway Lubricants quarantined
all stock and arranged an uplift of products from the warehouse
with the supplier. They also changed supplier and removed
reference to the MB 235.8 specification from the product label.
Case VLS010184 concerned a complaint regarding Fanfaro 75W-
90 Max 6 GL-5 Gear Oil, a synthetic gear oil suitable for use in all
types of manual transmissions, and its compliance with SAE J306
regarding low temperature properties.
VLS independently procured a sample of the product within
the UK and tested it for low temperature properties against ASTM
D2983. The test results indicated that the product did not meet the
SAE 75W specification as defined in the standard SAE J306 when
measured using the ASTM D2983 method.
Fanfaro immediately quarantined the product and arranged for
the disposal of all stock in their warehouse. They contacted their
supplier, which arranged a reblend of the product and committed
to sending VLS the new batch test result as soon as it was received.
Case VLS010185 concerned a complaint regarding Granville 75W-90
Fully Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid concerning its compliance
with SAE J306.
VLS independently procured a sample of the product within
the UK and tested it for low temperature properties against ASTM
D2983, which indicated that the product was not compliant due
to excessive viscosity at -40°C and, therefore not meeting the
requirements of an SAE 75W grade as defined in the SAE J306
standard.
In response to the investigation, Granville advised VLS that it has
changed its supplier since the product was blended and filled. They
had also changed their filling procedures and moved to automated
blending, which they believed had solved the issue. Granville
checked all batches subsequently manufactured and stated that
they were all compliant according to their testing.
Mike Bewsey, Chairman of VLS, commented, “Products that
do not comply with specifications regarding low temperature
properties may not provide adequate circulation and protection.
This can lead to accelerated wear at start up from cold and will not
support efficient operations. We thank the companies involved in
these investigations for uplifting and disposing of affected products
to protect end users and communicating their process changes to
ensure future products are compliant.”
Oil – the lifeblood
of a turbocharger
By Tom Wright,
Product Manager
at Melett
Lubrication is a key element to ensuring a turbocharger is doing
its job correctly. It is essential, therefore, to check that a vehicle’s
oil is the correct grade. When fitting a replacement turbo, it is
important that the oil system has been primed and is in full working
order. If this is not the case, it can lead to premature failure.
In this piece, Tom Wright, Product Manager at Melett, outlines
the core purpose of oil in relation to the turbocharger. Wright
argues there are many ways in which oil related issues can damage
the components, and in that respect, outlines why oil is the
lifeblood of a turbocharger, while also explaining the preventable
steps a technician can take.
Oil contamination
Causes
Wright advises: “Dirty oil, often referred to as ‘oil contamination’,
is one of the top killers of a turbocharger and can happen in a
multitude of ways. When repairing the vehicle, if the oil system is not
emptied, purged and changed correctly, it can leave debris from
the previous failure, which can contaminate the new oil and cause
premature failure.
“If a damaged, or poor-quality oil filter is used, this is another
way debris can pass through the filters and into the oil system. In
addition, liquid contaminants can lead to premature oil degradation,
and increased corrosion and wear, while oil degrading can also be
caused by excessive temperatures or extended service intervals.”
Prevention
If a turbo has failed, it’s important to ensure that all the oil systems
are purged and free from any foreign objects.
“A simple way of preventing dirty oil from affecting the
turbocharger is by taking extra care when changing the oil during
servicing to prevent accidental contamination,” adds Wright.
“It is also key to check for engine wear that could leave swarf
deposits.
“Something that must be done is to replace or clean the oil
inlet pipes and in-line micro filters, as this helps to prevent carbon
deposits entering the oil flow to the bearings.”
Wright concludes: “It is important to get a vehicle serviced every
year or every 10,000 miles, as well as changing the oil in accordance
with the vehicle manual, as it gives a turbo the best chance of having
a longer life cycle.”
Insufficient lubrication
Causes
Insufficient lubrication is also known as oil starvation or lack of
lubrication.
“It is often caused by blockages in the oil feed pipe and micro
filters within, damaged or bent oil feed pipes, a lack of priming of
the new turbo, as well as a damaged or worn oil pump, or sludge
and coke build up in the bearing housing from hot shutdowns,” says
Wright.
Prevention
“Using the correct grade of engine oil specified by the OEM engine
manufacturer is essential to give the turbocharger a long-lasting life
cycle. If the incorrect grade is used this can lead to overheating or
insufficient lubrication.
“Equally, oil supply is critical to the turbo, so it is important that a
technician ensures the oil flow is correct. Priming the turbocharger
and oil systems can stop the turbo from instant failure. Oil inlet pipes
should also be cleaned or replaced to remove carbon deposits or
sludge that could restrict oil flow to the bearing systems.”
Perhaps more crucially, Wright goes on to share a little-known fact
that many vehicle owners are unaware of: “It is important that drivers
26 THE GARAGE
22-27 Feature Oils and filters.indd 5 30/08/2023 15:17

OILSANDFILTERS
are aware that they need to allow time for the engine to warm up at
the start of each journey and cool down at the end.”
Oil leaks
Causes
“Oil leaks are somewhat of a myth when it comes to the turbo being
at fault,” comments Wright. “The biggest cause of oil leaks comes
from the environment that the turbo is situated in. There are very
few cases where an oil leak happens because of a component or
manufacturing issue.
“Oil leaks can occur when an engine is running on idle. This is
because the pressure within the housings is lower, which in turn
can lead to a vacuum being created, causing the oil to leak into the
turbine housing. Once the engine starts to run at normal speeds the
pressures will be restored, and the leak will stop.”
Wright adds: “Other things to consider are ‘engine blow by’ and
‘crank case blow by,’ both of which cause the same effect, as they
increase the pressure in the crank case. This affects the oil flowing
to the turbo at the correct rate, which acts as a restriction to the
oil return pipe, causing the turbo to leak oil at either the turbine or
compressor end.
“Oil leaks can occur on VSR (high speed) balancing machines, as
the ambient pressures required to create the seal are not present
as no housings are used. This can then force out oil from both the
compressor and turbine ends, giving the impression of a leak. This
is unlikely to occur when the replacement turbo is fitted to the
engine.”
Prevention
“When it comes to oil leaks, it is imperative that the vehicle
technician ensures air, exhaust, and oil drain systems are clear from
blockages or restrictions, before moving on to check there are no
leaks present in the exhaust system.
“The use of silicone on oil gaskets is not advised as both can easily
become detached and block oil passages. Similarly, technicians
should ensure the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and catalytic
converter are free of blockages.
“The correct gaskets and o-rings should always be used, and only
the correct standard of turbine housings and compressor housings
should be fitted.
“Lastly, technicians should always check for correct oil levels and
pressure.”
MAHLE issues fitment
advice for spin-on
oil filter in minibus
campers
● Latest technical bulletin highlights problems with the
installation of the OC 248 spin-on oil filter in minibus campers
● MAHLE offers simple tip to help these issues
MAHLE Aftermarket has issued its latest technical bulletin to
offer advice to technicians to help overcome any problems
when installing the OC 248 spin-on oil filter in minibus
campers.
When an additional oil cooler is installed in a minibus that
has been converted into a camper, installing the OC 248 spinon
oil filter often becomes much more difficult. MAHLE offers
technicians a simple tip that can help with any fitment issues.
The OC 248 spin-on oil filter is suitable for a wide range
of vans with a variety of body variants from manufacturers
such as Fiat, Opel, Renault, and Citroën. Generally, it can be
easily replaced during an oil change to ensure that the engine
oil is once again cleaned properly. In special cases, however,
replacing the filter can be much more difficult.
If an additional oil cooler is fitted, such as when a minibus
is being converted into a camper, the oil filter area usually
becomes much more cramped. And often, this is exactly
where the new oil cooler is connected to the oil circuit.
Feed and return lines, additional oil pressure switches, and
oil temperature sensors then get in the way when the filter
needs to be replaced. In such cases, the new oil filter either
cannot be fitted at all or can only be fitted at an angle. This
often causes the thread to get jammed, preventing the filter
from being properly mounted.
Alan Povey, Quality, Warranty and Technical Manager at
MAHLE, comments: “An oil filter adapter shifts the oil filter
connection by a few centimetres so that it can be properly
installed. Several versions of these adapters are commercially
available for a variety of vehicles.”
Povey adds: “It is important to note that when fitting oil
filters, the rubber seal must always be coated with clean
oil in order to prevent damage and leakages caused by dry
assembly. Spin-on oil filters may only be screwed on by hand
and tightened to the torque specified by the manufacturer.”
OILSANDFILTERS
Summer
months optimal
for annual filter
changes, says
First Line Ltd
First Line Ltd. says the summer months
provide the ideal time for technicians to
perform annual cabin filter changes, to
maintain clean air in-vehicle and keep the
air conditioning system running smoothly.
Cabin filters, also known as pollen
filters, use an electrostatic paper filter
to collect pollen, dust and debris and
prevent them from entering the vehicle.
By replacing a vehicle’s filter with a fresh
cabin filter for summer, it can also help
those suffering with allergies.
During the summer months, it is
particularly important to ensure that
the cabin filter is functioning properly,
especially as the pollen count is high as
these particles will clog up the filters.
Alex Jarvis-Cleaver, marketing
manager at First Line Ltd., said: “Worn
or clogged cabin filters can impede the
performance of the heating, ventilation,
and air conditioning (HVAC) system, and
this can happen at an increased speed in
the summer months. With summer here,
now’s the time to replace the cabin and air
filters to ensure the air you and your car
are breathing is as clean and pollen-free
as possible.”
The added pressure of filtering out the
harmful particles and contaminants could
lead to decreased heater/air conditioning
performance, unpleasant odours, and
safety issues.
To prevent these potential health
and safety issues, technicians should be
recommending filter replacement and,
irrespective of these known problems,
cabin filters should be automatically
replaced every 12 months.
GARAGE DIAGNOSTICS
Delphi helps
workshops
keep pace
with diagnostic
demands
Delphi say the increasing complexity of today’s vehicles means even the most routine
service and maintenance procedures now often require a diagnostic procedure to
unlock the vehicle’s security gateway.
“Access to a premium quality OBD diagnostic tool is now a must
for any workshop,” said Luke Garratt, UK & Nordics Technical
Services Manager at Delphi Aftermarket. “No matter what
you’re doing, chances are you’ll need to gain access to the
ECU to erase a fault code or calibrate a new component and
these operations can only be performed with a manufacturer
authorised diagnostic tool.”
Thankfully, the tools and knowledge required to service this
need are readily accessible and within the reach of garages of
all sizes, expanding the range of vehicles they can cater for, and
enabling them to compete on service with franchised dealers.
Delphi’s next-generation diagnostic tool, the DS180 BlueTech
vehicle communication interface (VCI), together with Delphi’s
DS car and light commercial vehicle software, gives workshops
access to in-depth diagnostics and advanced technical
information.
The BlueTech VCI delivers extremely fast scan times for an
extensive range of diagnostic interrogations with multiple CAN
channels, integrated Diagnostics over Internet Protocol (DoIP)
and even CAN FD protocol, future-proofing workshops against
the very latest automotive technologies.
The new tool also has integrated/automated security gateway
process that allows garages to seamlessly service securityprotected
vehicles whilst DTC-assist functionality provides
technicians with guided diagnostic assistance.
“We’ve listened to garages and technicians and worked to
incorporate everything they value and need in the BlueTech VCI,
including Pass-Thru capability,” said Luke. “This opens the door
to services such as ECU programming that were previously the
preserve of franchised dealers and their OE-specific tools.”
For some, these new complex tasks may seem daunting,
THE GARAGE 29
DIAGNOSTICS
particularly when approached
for the first time. However,
Delphi provides free e-learning
diagnostic courses for
software licence holders.
“These systems are
complex,” said Luke. “So we
aim to provide a complete
solution to workshop
technicians. The relationship
doesn’t stop when they buy
the diagnostic tool, it’s really
the starting point and we’re
seeing growing uptake over
time on the Delphi Academy
e-learning platform where
technicians can check or
improve their knowledge at
any time.”
By expanding their
knowledge and their diagnostic
capability, independent
garages can provide the same
level of service as a franchised
dealer – turning a challenge
into an opportunity.
Delphi aims to increase
diagnostics understanding
Delphi believes many independent garages are
still unsure of the diagnostics capabilities they
need for newer generation cars and of the
technologies they will encounter.
Delphi’s OBD diagnostics offering is built around the DS180
BlueTech vehicle communication interface (VCI). It’s usually
supplied in a ‘Car Kit’ including a high specification tablet as
well as the USB hub and cable needed to support J2534 ‘Pass-
Thru’.
Whilst many products connect via the car OBD port, the
levels of access and functionality they offer garages vary
hugely. Delphi says these differences are due to a host of
factors including the software capabilities and vehicle coverage
– as well as ability to legitimately interface with third party
vehicle manufacturer systems.
“The BlueTech VCI can help garages in the long term,” said
Marco Lagomarsini, EMEA Commercial Lead for Workshop
Solutions at Delphi Technologies Aftermarket. “Those thinking
further ahead appreciate how we can future-proof business.”
Pass-Thru is essential to access full diagnostics functionality,
specifically updating (or ‘flashing’) ECUs. The BlueTech DS180
enables garages to simply plug in, access VM portals, download
software and make updates.
“The aim is to make it all as seamless as possible,” said
Marco. “As well as supporting Pass-Thru we also make security
gateways simpler and quicker to navigate.”
Security gateways serve an entirely different purpose.
They exist to restrict and track who is accessing car ECUs for
safety-related operations, aiming to protect cars and drivers.
Historically, separate VM gateways have been time consuming
to register with, pay for and use.
Delphi’s ‘integrated solution’ results from the global
manufacturer’s agreement of commercial terms with a growing
list of VMs and groups including FCA, VAG and Mercedes Benz /
Smart. Delphi then implements the technical solutions to streamline
connectivity so licenced BlueTech users don’t have to log in to or
register with individual VM portals.
“The process seems very simple because we’ve done a lot of
complex work in the background to save technicians time,” said
Marco.
The DS180 BlueTech VCI sits firmly within the top tier of OE-level
diagnostics solutions available to garages according to Delphi. It
already supports key communications protocols like DoIP (used by
Volvo and JLR) and CAN FD (Flexible Data-Rate) – a fast protocol
currently used in high-end vehicles that will become more widely
adopted in future.
“Many technicians are nervous,” said Marco. “Pass-Thru can be
risky and you need to know what you’re doing so that’s why we’ve
developed specific training.”
Delphi’s BlueTech licence can be purchased for anywhere from 1
to 5 years, with reduced rates for longer terms. It includes not only
hardware warranty but also free access to the extensive diagnostic
e-learning content on Delphi Academy. There’s training modules
available on running procedures as well as Pass-Thru and security
gateways too.
evolution of Smoke leak detection
equipment
Vehicle diagnostics and workshop equipment specialist
Launch Tech UK has unveiled the latest iterations of its
popular Smoke 1 and Smoke 2 diagnostic leak detection
product line.
Both essential tools in the diagnostic technician’s
armoury, the third evolution of the entry-level Smoke 1 and
professional Smoke 2 tools enable quick and efficient leak
detection in hoses, connections, and other components.
Diagnostic trouble codes relating to emissions and
induction can be triggered through tiny leaks throughout a
vehicle’s system. Smoke 1 and Smoke 2 both feature a nosmoke
test mode to verify if a leak exists, before deploying a
harmless visual smoke aid to help technicians ascertain the
source of any issues.
The uprated Smoke 1 and Smoke 2 leak detection tools
introduce an improved heating system and upgraded
electronics. Smoke 1 is supplied in a robust case for workshop
use, only requiring a 12V DC supply to operate.
Smoke 2 is designed for heavy use in professional settings
and features a low pressure mode for testing delicate
components, supplied with a comprehensive accessory kit.
Launch Tech UK’s Smoke 1 and Smoke 2 can help to find
leaks in emissions, engine and transmission oil, turbo, and
exhaust systems. Both products are supplied with universal
seals for irregular component openings, 25-90mm adapter
cones for large openings and 100 millilitres of Launch Tech’s
DIAGNOSTICS
FAI Automotive
advises on
common valve
clearance issue
FAI Automotive has released advice on a common
issue with the Mitsubishi 4D56/T, offering tips on valve
clearance, recommending that essential adjustment
between the valve and rocker arm is necessary.
FAI’s comprehensive range of valves and guides are
manufactured to high-quality standards, with each
part produced from high grade materials.
This is essential for modern engines that run at very
high temperatures with a reduced stem diameter to
minimise friction.
As a specialist in this area, FAI advises that in
older applications that do not have a self-adjusting
hydraulic tappet or lifter, such as the Mitsubishi
4D56, manual adjustment between the rocker arm
and valve stem is a necessity.
When rebuilding the rocker shaft assembly, technicians should
adhere to the manufacturer clearance specifications, says FAI.
To begin, the engine should be at operating temperature,
before the technician ensures the timing marks are aligned
correctly by rotating the crank manually.
The engine must be at operating temperature when setting
valve stem clearances.
When these steps have been carried out correctly, FAI
instructs that you will see that the following valves are in the
raised position: Cylinder 1: Inlet & Exhausts; Cylinder 2: Inlet;
Cylinder 3: Exhaust.
The technician should then adjust the clearances by firstly
releasing tension on the rocker nut in preparation for the gauge.
Next, they need to place the correct feeler gauge between the
valve and rocker (size will be specified by the manufacturer).
After this, the technician should begin tightening the screw
while ensuring that the feeler gauge is met but not pinched, and
then the lock nut needs to be tightened to secure setting.
Once this has been completed, the feeler gauge should be
removed, before being reinserted to check there is a slight
interference between the valve stem and the rocker arm.
Following this, the crankshaft needs to be turned 360 degrees
clockwise.
They then need to once again adjust clearances by releasing
tension on the rocker lock nut, ensuring the correct feeler gauge
is in place, and ensuring the screw is tightened and the feeler
gauge is met, before tightening the screw and removing and
reinserting the feeler gauge.
While carrying out this step again, the following valves should
be focused on: Cylinder 4: Inlet & Exhaust; Cylinder 2: Exhaust;
and Cylinder 3: Intake.
Finally, to ensure the correct clearances are set and
maintained, the technician should replace the rocker cover, run
the engine for 10 minutes and then remove the rocker cover and
check tolerances are still correcting the same gauge(s).
As a conscientious supplier, FAI has initiated a programme to
mark every valve produced with the FAI part number, a factory
code, and batch number.
This information enables FAI to identify the valve or guide to the
factory it was manufactured in and the date it was produced on.
As its factory partners are ISO9001 & TS16949 certified, using
this information the company can identify the material used,
the foundry it was produced in, the QC records taken during
its production, and even the workforce on that shift, providing
complete reassurance and traceability.
valve guides, visit: https://faiauto.com/parts/example-part-7/
