NTDANEWS
NTDA delighted by DfT announcement
on use of rear-facing red flashing lamps
on breakdown vehicles
The NTDA has welcomed the Government’s publication, of
its ‘Plan for Drivers’ which contains details of the decision
by the Secretary of State for Transport to amend the
legislation to permit breakdown vehicles to be fitted with
rear-facing red flashing lamps when recovering brokendown
vehicles on GB roads.
The regulatory amendments that would permit red flashing
lamps on breakdown vehicles are not expected to enter
into force until 2025 but, as an interim measure, the DfT will
facilitate operators, to use red flashing lamps sooner. Operators will
need to apply for a Vehicle Special Order (VSO) under the authority
conferred upon the Secretary of State for Transport by section 44
of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
The NTDA has campaigned for the use of red lamps on breakdown
response vehicles for many years, both in its own right and alongside
the Professional Recovery Operators Federation (PROF), which has
led on the campaign.
NTDA CEO Stefan Hay said: “Vehicle Recovery Operators and Tyre
Technicians, both Mobile and Commercial, are comrades working
together to keep Britain moving in often appalling and usually very
dangerous conditions and sadly, in both cases, the recovery and
tyre industries have lost people at the side of the road.
This has been a long and often frustrating battle and the
PROF Chairman Richard Goddard, who spoke at the 2019 NTDA
Tyre Industry Conference on this matter, and Derek Firminger
of European Rescue and Recovery Initiative (ERRI) have been
phenomenal allies and inspirational leaders in this campaign. Over
the years we have fought together, laughed together, shouted
together and sometimes wanted to cry together and I can’t express
in words how absolutely delighted the NTDA is by this decision.
Common sense has finally prevailed and we now have another
extremely important safety tool available to protect our precious
technicians working at the roadside.”
The DfT will be publishing the reports from the two phases of its
funded research in due course. As well as the outcomes on the use
of red flashing lamps, the reports make recommendations which
could help improve safety for recovery technicians and other road
users.
The Motor
Ombudsman
sees busiest
quarter of 2023
for vehicle
service and
repair cases
● The drivetrain area of the vehicle drove the most consumer dissatisfaction,
followed by the level of customer service delivered by businesses
● Diesel cars were the source of over half of service and repair complaints
brought to The Motor Ombudsman during Q3
● A free-of-charge repair, compensation, and a full refund, were the most
requested resolutions by consumers to help bring their complaint to a close
The Motor Ombudsman has seen the highest volume of
service and repair cases brought by consumers to its
dispute resolution service in a single quarter so far this year.
Between 01st July and 30th September, the Ombudsman for the
automotive sector accepted a total of 1,348 new submissions
from motorists, up 10% from 1,226 in the second quarter, and
equating to a 13% increase versus the volume seen during the
opening three months of 2023 (1,189). Furthermore, the number
of disputes received by The Motor Ombudsman for Q3, also
surpassed last year’s tally by 9% for the same period (1,238).
Diesel cars drove over half (52%) of the service and repair
complaints in the past three months, followed by petrol models
(40%), electric vehicles (4%), and hybrids (4%).
The heightened case volumes (3,763 to date in 2023), which
fall under The Motor Ombudsman’s long- standing Motor Industry
Code of Practice for Service and Repair, have been mirrored by a
record number of contacts received from consumers during the
first nine months of the year – most likely sparked by the financial
pressures associated with the cost of living crisis, and a greater
likelihood to make a complaint to help recoup perceived losses,
rather than being a reflection of declining standards in this area
of the automotive sector.
When looking at the source of service and repair complaints
in the third quarter, just over half (51%) stemmed from disputes
logged within The Motor Ombudsman’s “drivetrain” category,
with the engine responsible for 73% of these complaints. This
is followed by the transmission (15%), and the fuel and exhaust
systems driving 12% of complaints respectively in this category.
Examples of concerns raised by consumers in the drivetrain area,
included engine failures due to incorrectly fitted oil filters and
turbos, and reconditioned gearboxes being installed on vehicles
before getting customer consent.
The level of customer service experienced by consumers
during a routine service or ad hoc remedial work accounted for
the second highest number of disputes (17%). An element of
discontent originated from factors, such as prolonged delays to
INDUSTRYNEWS
In the last three months, the number of vehicle service and repair cases logged
by The Motor Ombudsman rose to the highest level for a single quarter this year.
repairs, sometimes without the provision of a courtesy
car, vehicles being damaged whilst in the care of a
business, and customers paying for diagnostic work
that did not identify the root cause of the faults
reported.
Issues relating to the chassis area of the vehicle,
which takes in the likes of the suspension, brakes,
wheels, and the steering, were responsible for just
over 10% of complaints that The Motor Ombudsman
has received during the last quarter. Problems
highlighted by consumers, who sought help resolving
their case, resulted from different tyre sizes being
fitted on a single axle, and cars having winter and
summer tyres at the same time. Other disputes
related to shock absorber failures causing uneven ride
heights, and brakes malfunctioning following software
updates.
Electrical issues (10%) were also a cause for
consumer complaints during the last quarter, with
cruise control systems malfunctioning, EV batteries
draining faster than expected, and brake lights not
illuminating during pedal activation, amongst the
faults.
On the subject of the exterior (8%), bodywork
defects were a cause for concern, with consumers
reporting dissatisfaction about paint blistering and
poor quality repairs. There were equally failures of
external fixtures, such as electric wing mirrors not
folding, EV charging flaps not closing, and sliding
doors causing rear wheel arch damage. Complaints
concerning the interior of vehicles (3%) ranged from
Alcantara bubbling on steering wheels, to repairs
causing window sunscreen roller blinds and USB ports
to stop functioning.
During the third quarter of 2023, the three most
requested resolutions stated by the majority of
consumers to help bring their dispute to a close,
were a free of charge repair (28%), followed by
compensation (25%), and a full refund (22%). Where a
monetary value was attributed by consumers to their
preferred resolution when submitting their case to
The Motor Ombudsman, this stood at an average of
£4,258, an increase of 16% versus the figure of £3,675
seen for the first six months of 2023.
Commenting on the latest figures, Bill Fennell, Chief
Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor
Ombudsman, said: “This year has seen a notable uplift
in the volume of contacts received from consumers,
and the number of cases accepted with regards to
a service or repair. With the rising costs to maintain
and keep a car on the road, combined with other
significant financial pressures on households, this is
driving a greater likelihood to make a complaint.”
Bill added: “With the current trend showing no
let-up in the volume of cases accepted by our service,
we expect to receive in excess of 5,000 service and
repair disputes by year-end, and as we look ahead to
the coming months, 2024 is likely to follow a similar
trend according to current projections.”
NEWS
Unlocking profit
opportunities in winter:
Why car battery failures matter for automotive
aftermarket professionals
Banner is a founding member of the Original Equipment Suppliers
Aftermarket Association (OESAA). One of the key factors behind
joining was the organisation’s determination and strategy to educate
today’s and tomorrow’s industry professionals – and it achieved
exactly that with regular participation at AutoInform and OESAA
Academy Live.
In this final collaboration in the
three-article series, Banner Business
Development Manager, Russell Shea,
explores the rational reasons behind battery
failure and replacing it with a premium
battery is vital, particular as temperatures
plummet. This also represents opportunities
for independent workshops and motor
factors:
As automotive professionals serving the
automotive aftermarket, we know this time
of year marks the start of more and more
panicky customers telling you that their car
won’t start! While we know more batteries
fail this time of year, do you know why?
Do you also know how these failures can
create profit opportunities and bolster your
customer service?
The causes of battery failure:
Wear and tear: Battery wear and tear is a
natural occurrence over time. Each cycle
reduces a battery’s ability to supply current
(CCA). Even in a discharged state, a battery
in good condition can supply the specified
levels of CCA when fully charged; however,
a battery in poor condition will struggle to
do so while still indicating a fully charged
state.
Blowing hot and cold:
Weather conditions play a significant
role in battery performance. Cold
weather affects battery plate aging and
deterioration, reduces chemical reaction
speeds, and increases starter motor power
requirements. Charging system efficiency
is also reduced. In contrast, hot ambient
and under-bonnet temperatures accelerate
battery aging, plate corrosion, selfdischarge
rates, and electrolyte use.
Plate sulphation:
A natural element of battery discharge, this
process coats the battery’s plates in lead
sulphate when it reaches 12.4V or below.
Battery discharge leads to the accumulation
of lead sulphate on the plates. If a battery
is not quickly recharged, these deposits can
crystallise and harden, reducing battery
performance. Poor stock control, recharge
procedures, and undercharging conditions
contribute to plate sulphation.
10 THE GARAGE
B
10,11,News Banner Batts 2.indd 1 30/10/2023 11:41

Acid stratification and deep cycling:
Acid stratification occurs when acid in
the electrolyte solution concentrates at
the bottom of battery cells. This is more
common in cold months and results from
undercharging and short driving periods.
Deep discharging and rapid recharging, as
seen in taxis and delivery vans, can lead
to rapid performance loss and premature
failure.
Overcharging and undercharging:
Overcharging is caused by a malfunctioning
charging system, leading to battery
overheating and electrolyte evaporation.
Undercharging, common in vehicles used
for short journeys, results in slow plate
sulphation, particularly when alternator
voltage is low, the drive belt is loose, or
cables exhibit high resistance.
Short circuits, dead cells and internal
breaks:
Short circuits and dead cells are typical
within the first year of battery service.
Short circuits can be identified through
lower specific gravity (SG) and boiling during
discharge tests. Internal breaks are detected
by good SG readings but no open circuit
voltage reading.
Does product quality matter?
Product quality is paramount when it comes
to car batteries! If the battery is the heart of
a vehicle, would you settle for anything less
than the best? Premium OE brand batteries,
like that from Banner, are known for their
quality and durability.
When compared to private label products
of the same size and specifications,
premium batteries often stand out in terms
of weight, indicating a higher lead content.
Manufacturers can cut costs by reducing
materials used in battery construction,
resulting in smaller, thinner, and fewer
plates, but this cost-cutting approach
compromises the battery’s reliability,
specification, performance, and overall
lifespan.
In such batteries, power delivery
is often achieved by increasing the
acid concentration in the electrolyte.
Unfortunately, this has a direct and
detrimental impact on performance and
longevity. A battery’s life cycle, divided into
three phases – formatting, peak and decline
– is compromised when plate numbers and
lead content are reduced, and acid strength
is increased.
Conclusion
Understanding the causes of car battery
NEWS
failures is essential for automotive
aftermarket professionals. The winter season
poses unique challenges to battery health.
By being proactive and addressing
these issues, reiterating the importance
of using a premium battery, we can help
motorists keep their wheels turning and
enjoy a reliable and problem-free driving
experience. This proactive approach not
only benefits the customers but also creates
profit opportunities for both technicians and
motor factors.
OPINION
ECONOMY
DRIVING
& HOW TO
HYPER MILE
As I speak to friends & family members on how
to get more mileage out of their tank of fuel I
introduced them to the concept of economy
driving & how to hyper mile. I even challenge them
that by doing so they could, potentially, get an extra
50 miles per tank as a minimum and I want to share
that concept with you.
First thing, ask yourself do you even need to make this
journey? Can you go wherever it is your going on another day,
or tie two journeys into one at a later date? If so, you’ve just
saved making a complete journey.
Second, is the car in optimum condition? Is the boot empty or
full of shoes/coats/gym equipment, etc? Is the back seat empty
or covered in school bags/clothes/coats/shoes? Carrying extra
weight increases fuel usage. Are your tyres at the correct pressure?
Do you need to drive around with a full tank of fuel?
Once you’ve established that you really do need to make this
journey & that the car is optimal, let’s look at the drive. When you
get in, adjust the seat/mirrors, put your seat belt on & tune the
radio before you start the engine as a cold idling engine uses more
fuel. Start it up & let it idle for about 5 seconds before setting off,
this allows for oil to be pumped around the engine & for the piston
crown to start expand. For the next few miles stay in a low gear to
work the engine and assist in heating up, not exceeding 2-2.5k revs.
Once you are up and driving, that’s when it gets more difficult
& important. Timing & anticipation is the trick. Timing the lights &
anticipating other driver movements, reducing the deceleration &
acceleration. When you accelerate you use more fuel, thus timing
junction’s means you don’t have to slow so much which in turn
means you have less to accelerate.
The final point though is arguably the one that will save you the
most fuel/money, and that is the art of coasting. As you approach
a junction back off the throttle slightly & allow the car to start to
slow way in advance. Most modern cars have low friction engine
and gearbox oils, with low rolling resistance tyres. In older vehicles
when you take your foot off the throttle the car would start to slow
By Onkar Chahal
down immediately & noticeably, now they can coast for miles.
If you anticipate the cars around you and utilise your local
knowledge, you could potentially coast for a mile as you approach
the roundabout. The trick is to arrive at almost the speed you need
to be without braking, that way you have timed it right.
So I walk to town/bank/opticians etc, keep enough fuel on board
for just that week and coast about 3 miles, each way, every day as
I anticipate traffic at roundabouts & junctions. The boot is empty &
the tyre pressures are checked. I also keep the fuel computer on
instant economy as opposed to average, so I can see the difference
my throttle inputs have as I try to maintain a high reading. Every
day I coast 6 miles which equates to 30 miles a week. That’s the
equivalent of driving to work and back for free, once a week.
If we extrapolate those figures, we’re doing 120 miles a month for
free or 1000 a year. Now you can’t tell me you wouldn’t notice that
saving, could you?
It takes some getting used to, and it isn’t for everyone! When you
master it though, your economy will improve hugely as your running
costs reduce.
Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to improve your tank
range by 50 miles. Can you? Will you?
Brembo launches
the Greenance kit
Low emissions and reduced
total cost of ownership for light
commercial vehicles
The future oriented brake kit offers a greener
solution for light commercial vehicles by reducing
particulate emissions by more than 80%, while
lasting up to 3 times longer than an equivalent
Aftermarket product. The result is a lower total
cost of ownership that drops on average by 15%,
combined with top braking performance.
Brembo, the leading company in
the development and production
of high-performance braking
systems, announces its go to market of
the new Brembo Beyond Greenance Kit,
an eco-friendly brake solution, currently
specifically engineered for light commercial
vehicles.
Deriving its name by merging the words
‘GREEN’ and ‘PERFORMANCE’, the Brembo
Greenance Kit is a solution that anticipates
low environmental impact requirements. It
matches both customer expectations and
environmental awareness to contribute
to a sustainable and greener world,
without compromising on the top braking
performance expected from Brembo
products.
Greenance Kit is the perfect combination
of performance and durability, ensuring a
much lower environmental impact during
braking, with a significant reduction in
particulate emissions: -83% in PM101 and
-80% in PM2.5.
This pioneering solution guarantees
extended mileage and a significant
improvement in terms of the total cost
of ownership of vehicles amounting to an
average reduction of 15%. It ensures an
increased durability of the brake discs,
tripling2 their expected lifetime. This leads
to relevant cost savings over the life of
the vehicle that is a top priority for longdistance
professionals and drivers of light
commercial vehicles and fleets.
Greenance Kit features a jointly
developed range of new combined
innovative alloy discs and newly engineered
brake pads, which greatly enrich Brembo’s
Aftermarket line-up. This is directly derived
from the company’s extensive heritage and
experience and its continuous focus on
innovation in Racing/Motorsports and the
Original Equipment (OE) markets.
Thanks to Brembo’s unparalleled
technological know-how and continuous
research and development in brake
technologies, the Greenance Kit offers
the most sustainable solution without
compromising performance. These
kits have already passed the ECE-R90
homologation tests as well as the most
severe benchmark road tests, conducted
by the company’s technicians, accordingly
to Brembo’s most stringent requirements.
The Greenance Kit is part of the
new Brembo Beyond product line, the
company’s solution line tailored to
bring innovation and sustainability in
Duckhams-driven victory as Adam Smalley
triumphs in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain
Duckhams-sponsored Adam Smalley achieved a thrilling victory in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great
Britain 2023, marking his third British championship win. The young, prodigious driver delivered
a spectacular performance throughout this year’s competition.
The final two rounds of the 16-round
championship took place at Brands
Hatch on October 8. However, the real
turning point occurred on September 24,
2023, during rounds 13 and 14 at Silverstone.
It was here that Adam Smalley secured the
championship with remarkable ease. His
exceptional performance in round 14, where
he achieved his 13th podium finish out of 14
races in the season, solidified his dominance.
This remarkable consistency made him the
undisputed champion of the Porsche Carrera
Cup Great Britain 2023 with two rounds to
spare, and celebrated a significant milestone
in his racing career.
The championship started in April with
the first two rounds at Donnington Park.
Subsequent rounds took place at Brands
Hatch, Thruxton, Oulton Park, Knockhill and
Silverstone before returning to Donnington
Park and Brands Hatch for the grand finale.
Duckhams chose to sponsor Adam Smalley
not only because of his racing talent but also
because of his commitment to the racing
world, which aligns closely with Duckhams’
values. Adam’s unwavering determination,
relentless spirit, and passion for racing
make him the ideal driver for Duckhams
sponsorship. Additionally, Duckhams, an
iconic British lubricant brand since 1899, has
a prestigious motorsport heritage, making the
partnership with Adam Smalley a natural fit.
Duckhams’ successful association with
motorsport began in the 1960s with
motorcycle racing. In 1971, the company
moved into Formula 1, Formula 3 and
Formula Ford sponsorship, which proved to
be a winning move. Duckhams-sponsored
Jackie Ickx won the F1 Race of Champions
at Brands Hatch in 1974, and in 1975,
James Hunt won the Dutch Grand Prix in a
Surtees. During the 1980s and 1990s, the
original British motor oil supported the
Van Diemen Works Formula Ford Team and
celebrated victory in 1981 when Ari Vatanen
became World Rally Champion. Duckhams’
involvement with the Porsche Carrera GB
Cup began in 2021 with a first victory by
Duckhams driver Dan Cammish, followed by
Adam’s victory in 2023.
Hailing from Poulton-Le-Fylde, Adam’s
career began in karting, where he
showcased his potential early on.
Transitioning to car racing, Adam won
the Ginetta Junior Championship in
2018, propelling him into the Ginetta GT5
Challenge in 2019. He moved up to the
Ginetta GT4 Supercup Championship in
2020 and had a strong debut season.
In 2021, Adam secured the Ginetta GT4
Supercup championship. Following this
success, he was selected as the Porsche GB
Junior driver for 2022/2023.
In his debut year in the Porsche Carrera
Cup GB Championship, Adam’s impressive
performance earned him second place
in the 2022 championship. In 2023, he
achieved his goal by winning the Porsche
Carrera Cup GB Championship with an
outstanding season, securing 13 podiums in
14 races. This victory adds to his growing list
of British Champion titles.
Duckhams Chairman Jabir Sheth said,
“Adam’s championship win in the
Porsche Carrera Cup GB underscores
his exceptional talent and showcases the
dedication that has fuelled Duckhams since
1899. His victory exemplifies the spirit of
winners. Duckhams is proud to support him
and looks forward to his promising future
in motorsports, with gratitude to all our
fans and partners for their crucial support.
Congratulations, Adam, here’s to more wins
together!”
Duckhams are also OR BRIC Superbike
2023 champions in Thailand, solidifying
their motorsports legacy. Founded by
Alexander Duckham, a natural innovator,
successful businessman, and pioneer of
modern movement, Duckhams has been
making engines move since 1899.
ALLDATA Europe and Schaeffler partner to provide
REPXPERT members with instant access to original
technical repair data
REPXPERT members can now join the 100,000 customers and 400,000
technicians worldwide already taking advantage of original OEM repair
data from ALLDATA.
Renowned automotive brands,
ALLDATA Europe and Schaeffler, are
proud to announce that they have
joined forces to provide REPXPERT members
original vehicle manufacturer (VM) technical
repair data.
REPXPERT, a digital platform and
community developed by Schaeffler,
is dedicated to supporting automotive
professionals with product and technical
material; therefore, its collaboration with
ALLDATA Europe, a provider of genuine OE
repair and maintenance information, is a
perfect fit.
How does the partnership work?
REPXPERT members in the UK can access
this invaluable resource by simply clicking
on the ALLDATA Repair banner within the
REPXPERT web portal. This will transport
them to a new landing page where they
can request a two-week free trial. This
period will grant them unrestricted access
to original repair and collision information
for 33 VMs, all of which have licensing
agreements with ALLDATA Europe.
ALLDATA Europe, proud to have 12,000
customers in 30 European countries, has
coverage of over 95% of cars currently on
European roads. This equates to ~91,000
unique year, make, model and engine
combinations, along with 72 million technical
drawings, including electrical connector
views. Technical documents include repair
procedures, wiring diagrams, Technical
Service Bulletins (TSBs), and Diagnostic
Trouble Codes (DTCs). This extensive
resource is available in English, German,
French, Spanish, and Italian.
Access to this data will enhance
the efficiency and quality of repair
and maintenance work undertaken by
REPXPERT members. ALLDATA Europe
is confident, therefore, that REPXPERT
members will sign-up to a 12-month
subscription upon a successful trial.
Moreover, for added value, REPXPERT
subscribers who commit to an ALLDATA
Repair ‘power user license’ before
December 31, 2023, will be entitled to
three unique logins – all for the price of
a standard, one-login license. This means
a trio of technicians can utilize ALLDATA
Repair simultaneously, enhancing a
workshop’s productivity and efficiency.
investment.
“Make complicated repairs simple
with ALLDATA Repair”
ALLDATA President, Satwinder Mangat, said:
“Access to accurate repair information
is paramount in our industry and our
collaboration with Schaeffler reinforces
this ambition to remove the guesswork
and make complicated repairs simple with
ALLDATA Repair.”
ALLDATA Europe Managing Director,
Karol Englert, added: “The ALLDATA
Repair technical repair data will support
the REPXPERT members with accurate
information just when they need it. The
aftermarket technician is generally looking
after vehicles from many brands – so
a wide-reaching information source is
vital for them to be able to service their
customers.
“We are thrilled to embark on this
journey and partner with a worldclass
organization, like Schaeffler. Our
dedication to delivering original OE data,
coupled with Schaeffler’s OEM pedigree,
ensures this is a perfect match. We believe
that together, we will redefine technicians’
access and utilization of repair information
across Europe.”
Head of Schaeffler REPXPERT, Sven-
Olev Müller, said: “Particularly against
the background of the technological
shift we are currently experiencing in the
automotive industry, garages are now
dealing with increasingly complex repair
and maintenance work. The need for
well-prepared information and practical
tips is high. The aim of REPXPERT’s service
offer is to provide the most comprehensive
coverage possible. ALLDATA’s solution
complements our existing offering in the
UK which is why we happily recommend
NEWS
Ensure a complete replacement
with BM Catalysts’ fitting kits and
pressure pipe range
Europe’s leading manufacturer of aftermarket hot end emissions products,
BM Catalysts, has reiterated the importance of using new fittings when
replacing an emissions control product.
BM Catalysts also recommends
that technicians consider replacing
pressure pipes when installing a new
diesel particulate filter (DPF), to help
avoid issues associated with blocked or
damaged pipes.
In addition to regular range expansions to
its high-quality emissions control product
lines, BM Catalysts supports technicians by
ensuring access to an extensive range of
accompanying mounting components, and
a range of pressure pipes for over 1,300
different vehicle fitments.
Fitting kits are launched as standard with
most new-to-range parts and can include
various components, such as clamps,
washers, springs, and specialist nuts and
bolts, tailor-made for each product.
Installing new pressure pipes is
recommended when replacing a DPF as
they are highly susceptible to damage and
can also become blocked over time, thus
producing incorrect DPF pressure sensor
readings which can cause further problems.
Mark Blinston, commercial director at
BM Catalysts, said: “The benefits of using
new a fitting kit outweigh the costs and we
would encourage technicians to utilise the
kits in our range to help prevent invalidating
warranties and avoid the pitfalls that can
arise from trying to reuse old or existing
fittings.
“Where mounting components for the old
unit are worn or damaged, it’s important
that these are replaced to ensure the
longevity of the new unit.
Our fitting kit offering is aligned with our
unwavering commitment to developing
and releasing new-to-range parts so that
technicians always
have access to an
extensive range that
enables them to complete
repairs as efficiently as
possible.
“We also want to remind
technicians that it’s best practice to
install new pressure pipes when fitting
a replacement DPF. If a pressure pipe is
blocked, it can be mistakenly diagnosed
as a faulty DPF. If the DPF is then
replaced and yet the same incorrect
pressure readings are still being
produced, it can be a huge waste of the
garage’s time and resources.”
BM Catalysts proudly boasts fitting kit
coverage for its entire range of selective
catalytic reduction (SCR) references and
over 90% of its entire catalytic converter
and DPF range.
The company’s range of pressure
pipes currently features over 200
different part numbers, all of which are
manufactured from high-quality 304
grade stainless steel to ensure optimum
durability.
BM Catalysts has an unrelenting
commitment to providing customers with
a wide choice of high-quality aftermarket
products. Complementing its regular
range expansions to increase European
vehicle parc coverage, BM Catalysts
also has an uncompromising approach
to research and development, working
to identify additional fitments to offer
even greater choice to motor factors and
garages.
TRAINING
Delphi launches
Training Prospectus 2.0
Delphi has just released
a comprehensive new
66-page training
prospectus, showcasing
the wealth of solutions
now available to the UK
aftermarket.
Delphi’s ‘blended learning’ ethos originated
to make it as easy as possible for garages to
access learning materials, whilst also taking
account of the fact that individuals prefer
to absorb information in different ways.
What this means in practice, is a proven
combination of onsite training, delivered
at the company’s state-of-the-art training
centre in Warwick, is highlighted alongside
the rapidly growing online library of
modules. The Delphi Academy e-learning
suite covers everything from fundamentals
like braking systems to emerging
technologies like EV and ADAS.
The prospectus reminds readers that the
content has been developed using Delphi’s
knowledge and insight, gained as a leading
global automotive parts and systems OEM.
High quality courses have been created
using in-house product engineers and ‘time
served’ technical training specialists.
“We fully embrace the blended training
approach as it’s proven to improve
knowledge retention,” said Luke Garratt,
UK and Nordics Technical Services Manager
at Delphi. “We believe Delphi offers the
most advanced and comprehensive learning
experience available through online videos,
webinars, interactive simulations, workshop
courses and more.
“Our case studies show that continuous
learning not only helps technicians
stay motivated, it can also enhance job
satisfaction, leading to higher rates of
productivity and staff retention.”
Delphi’s commitment to future
technology is readily apparent. Detailed
options are given for popular courses
on Hybrid and Electric vehicles, running
from Level 1 right through to Level 4,
whilst courses on hydrogen appear for
the first time too. IMI Accreditation and
Delphi TechSafe continuous professional
development (CPD) solutions are
highlighted, encouraging garages to
pursue these industry-recognised
qualifications and prove the expertise
needed to work safely with high-voltage
electrical systems.
Information is included on Delphi’s
BlueTech diagnostics platform, as well as
the fast-growing Masters of Motion hub,
which launched at the start of the year
to offer garages free ‘How To’ videos and
job-useful information.
New brake hose range
now available from
BETTAPARTS
Fras-Le-owned BETTAPARTS has launched a new range of ABTEX Brake
Hoses, with the addition of over 200 new part numbers, as the brand
looks to meet increased market demand.
Matt Leeming, marketing manager at BETTAPARTS comments:
“Operating under extreme stress whenever the brakes are
used, brake hoses are a safety-critical part on all vehicles. They
need to be checked regularly, as any faults will lead to a loss of
brake fluid. This in turn will cause a drop in pressure, which can
lead to catastrophic brake failure.”
ABTEX brake hoses are tested to SAEJ1401 requirements, and
they undergo strict burst tests and volumetric expansion tests
for the ultimate in safety.
Plus, all assemblies are pressure tested 3000-3600psi and
approved to both ISO9001:2015 and ISO14001:2015. The testing
is carried out from raw materials through to the final product
and all units are made in the UK.
PRODUCTS
“It’s ok, I’m with the AA”
AND SO IS TOWN & COUNTRY COVERS!
There is rarely a bigger endorsement for a
company than the AA using its products, which
is why Town & Country Covers is proud to
reveal that the renowned breakdown service
has been using its seat covers in their vehicles
for nearly a decade.
There are currently more than 2,000 vehicles in the AA’s
breakdown and recovery fleet, ranging from Ford Transit
Customs to VW Transporters to large recovery trucks. To
ensure they provide the occupants with the ultimate protection,
all vans are fitted with Town & Country Covers seat covers.
After more than a century since its inception, the AA now has
more than 14 million members and is the UK’s largest motoring
organisation. Town & Country Covers has been operating
for almost 20 years, making it one of the oldest seat cover
manufacturers in the UK. They have a long-standing relationship
with the AA, as well as with several prominent vehicle
manufacturers.
Town & Country Covers was born out of a need for vehicle
users to protect the seats of their vehicles while pursuing
outdoor sports and activities, while not wanting to get back
into a car when wet and/or muddy. It has continued to evolve
beyond this to become what it is today: a company that still
designs every seat cover in house, holds stock in an ever
expanding 6,200 sq ft warehouse to ensure fantastic delivery
times and employs a truly dedicated team.
James Newman, Director, Town & Country Covers, said:
“We’ve had an incredible relationship with The AA over the last
10 years, and as a household name, they’re a fantastic company
to be aligned with.
“They understand if you want to keep a vehicle in a good
condition, it is worth investing in a quality seat cover to protect
the seats from spills, dirt and even potential tears in the seat’s
fabric.
“The AA’s patrols spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so it
was important to us to provide them with a seat cover that is
comfortable, waterproof and quick to fit. We’re naturally proud
of our relationship with the AA, and look forward to it continuing
over the long term.”
Dug Dudley, Head Fleet Engineer at the AA, commented:
“Town & Country Covers has been an important supplier
to us over the years, and we trust in the premium quality of
their products and the feedback from our patrols is always
positive. Our patrols regularly work in the rain or need to get
to difficult to reach places, which sometimes involves them
laying on the floor and potentially getting dirty, so it’s important
to us and them that their vehicle can be kept as clean and as
comfortable as possible. All these reasons are why we specify
Town & Country Covers seat covers for our vehicles, as they’re
waterproof, resilient and easy to clean.”
LIGHTING
BRIGHTER
OR WHITER?
Why you should be trading up
bulbs for your customers
With cheap bulbs still the standard replacement choice, renowned lighting
specialist, OSRAM, is urging technicians to think again and consider the
benefits of selling customers an upgraded bulb instead!
26 THE GARAGE
THE BENEFITS OF SELLING
CUSTOMERS AN UPGRADED BULB
It’s a well-known saying – “buy cheap, buy twice” – so why does
the trade tend to compromise on quality when having to choose
products for its customers? Technicians naturally want to make
a good margin for the parts and consumables they fit, so does
that mean they often overlook the best brand? When it comes to
ordering their products, workshops shouldn’t simply look at the
price, but instead, the brand, the longevity of the product and its
quality. If the part is of premium quality, it stands to reason that it
will not need replacing as quickly as a product that is cheaper, but
ultimately of poorer quality.
As well as providing customers with a better experience, this
policy also creates a greater profit margin for the workshop – so is a
win-win for both sides.
Furthermore, technicians should also be urging their customers
to allow them to replace bulbs in pairs, rather than just changing
the one broken or burnt-out. Like socks and shoes, headlights are
always better when changed in pairs. Replacing just one failed bulb
can result in an unbalanced or unpredictable headlight beam that
can cause serious hazards for the driver and other road users. A car
is designed so that it works best when both lights are functioning
equally, only then will drivers get the full advantage of the combined
headlight beam. In addition, if one bulb has failed, it’s reasonable
to think that the other might follow, so to avoid this inconvenience,
replacing both is common sense.
Therefore, OSRAM is encouraging technicians to begin asking
customers: “would you prefer your bulb brighter or whiter?” when it
comes to replacing these safety critical components in a vehicle this
winter. This simple question will prompt a conversation about quality
and, if they are happy to upgrade their bulbs, it will provide them
with a better driving experience, as they will be able to see the road
clearer and see potential hazards earlier.
One of OSRAM’s leading products is its NIGHT BREAKER 200, the
most powerful halogen bulb the company offers, with up to 200%
more brightness and up to 20% whiter light, when compared to the
minimum legal standard, they generate up to a 150m long beam of
light on the road ahead.
This product is one of the bestselling bulbs in OSRAM’s upgrade
portfolio and is highly regarded in the industry, especially as it was
recently recognised in Auto Express’s 2023 Product Awards. All of
this information provides technicians with an excellent upselling
opportunity, as it demonstrates the quality and brightness of this
range.
The NIGHT BREAKER 200 is available in H4, H7 and H11 ECE bulb types.
LIGHTING
Dominant double victory for Philips bulbs
in the UK’s number one annual headlamp
bulb test by Auto Express!
Philips RacingVision GT200 is the Halogen H4 Best Buy
Philips X-tremeVision gen2 is the top HID Xenon Contender
Following on from Philips RacingVision GT200 scooping
Headlamp of the Year and H7 Best Buy honors in the previous
Auto Express product mega test and awards, Lumileds is
proud to announce that in the latest edition of the Auto Express
Headlamp Bulb tests – which, this year cover both H4 Halogen bulbs
and D3S HiD Xenon headlamp bulbs – Philips bulbs have won the
coveted “Best Buy” status across the board.
Philips RacingVision GT200 awarded once again
This adds further recognition to the numerous awards that Philips
RacingVision GT200 has taken in various bulb tests across Europe,
since its launch in 2020. The Philips product was the first bulb rated
at up to +200% brightness compared to the industry standard.
This raised the bar for halogen lighting at the time, and still, some
three years later, Philips RacingVision GT200 is proving to be the
benchmark that other halogen bulbs aim to match.
A high luminance filament and a unique coating on the glass
are key factors in the Philips RacingVision GT200’s performance.
Like all Philips bulbs, it is produced to extremely high standards,
with precision welding and precise filament alignment, but the
RacingVision GT200 also features Diamond Precision Quartz-glass
technology, with its increased translucency for a brighter light
on the road. This also helps protect the headlamp optic from
UV damage and gives increased pressure and shock resistance
properties.
Interestingly, this year - unlike previous years - where the
runners-up have generally been awarded the much coveted
“Recommended” status, Auto Express felt unable to give any such
recognition to the other contenders.
The technology behind the bulbs is all aimed at making them
deliver a safer and more comfortable driving experience for drivers
and other road users. [CM1] [SM2]
The “Best Buy”
The “Best Buy” recommendation is the first such award for
the Philips Xenon X-tremeVision gen2 and Lumileds is justifiably
delighted. “Philips absolutely dominated this test, taking every one
of our assessments – and by a substantial margin,” wrote Auto
Express Product Editor, Kim Adams about the Xenon X-tremeVision
Gen2. “Rivals struggled to get within 10 percent of the stellar
[Philips] X-tremeVision.”
Philips Xenon X-tremeVision gen2 is made of high-quality
anti-UV quartz glass and is able to withstand severe thermal
shock. Engineered using Philips Xenon technology for ultimate
performance, it offers the most powerful beam from the Philips
xenon portfolio up to 150% more vision[1]. Philips X-tremeVision
gen2 bulbs help drivers to spot obstacles earlier, allowing them to
react earlier.
“As the inventors of HiD Xenon lighting, it is heartening to know
we still set the standard in the category with Philips X-tremeVision
gen2,” enthuses Lumileds UK and Eire Country Manager, Richard
Armstrong. “And, what can we say about Philips RacingVision GT200
that hasn’t already been said? Once again, it has proved itself to be
the class of the field.”
“Headlamp Bulbs are always likened to being the eyes of the car,”
continues Richard Armstrong, “and it is no exaggeration to say that,
simply put, the better you see the road ahead in the car, the safer
and more pleasant it is to drive. Bulbs are one of the least expensive
safety upgrades you can make to your vehicle, so we encourage
everyone to consider upgrading your lights when replacing your
bulbs. With Philips RacingVision GT200 for halogen applications and
Philips X-tremeVision gen2 for xenon, the tests show that these
Philips bulbs are both hard to beat!”
P & W Auto Services wins The Motor
Ombudsman-sponsored Customer Service
The Motor Ombudsman, the
Ombudsman dedicated to the
automotive sector, is pleased to
announce that P & W Auto Services
Ltd, an independent garage located in
Irlam, Greater Manchester, has won their
sponsored Customer Service trophy at this
year’s Servicesure ‘Autocentre of the Year’
awards ceremony. The prestigious annual
event, held at the historic Coombe Abbey
Hotel in Warwickshire, rewards examples of
excellence across the UK-wide Servicesure
Autocentre network.
The Customer Service award showcases
a business that has demonstrated an
exemplary level of service during the past 12
months. From the many high calibre entries
received in this category, it was P & W Auto
Services – a Motor Ombudsman Service and
Repair Code-accredited business, which
opened its doors in the North West nearly
a decade ago, that stood out from the
competition, thereby emerging victorious to
claim the 2023 title.
The family-run garage was recognised
for its positive mantra of ‘We don’t have
problems, only solutions’, highlighting their
philosophy of going the extra mile and doing
whatever it takes to get cars back on the
road for customers, so as to ensure they
leave the garage’s premises completely
satisfied. The business was equally praised
for its transparent processes and for their
welcoming and open approach at every
touchpoint in the customer journey, in
addition to their local vehicle collection
and delivery service to help, in particular,
elderly drivers, and vehicle owners in the
surrounding area who may have difficulty
visiting a garage premises in-person, such as
those who have recently left hospital.
winning this year’s award, and they
should be very proud of their fantastic
competitive sector means that going
above and beyond for customers to drive
repeat business and positive word-ofmouth
recommendations is absolutely
imperative, and that’s exactly the
philosophy that this garage exemplifies.
Well done to all involved!”
Lifting the trophy, Patricia Pallister,
Director of P & W Auto Services,
commented: “We are delighted to have
received this award, and it is testament
to the hard work and dedication of the
entire team. Day in, day out, we strive
to ensure that every customer receives
the best possible experience when they
walk through our doors. Furthermore,
after starting our garage completely from
scratch nearly ten years ago, we are
delighted to have evolved into an awardwinning
business with a growing customer
base, coupled with state-of-the-art
premises that allow us to deliver the high
standards required by both The Motor
Ombudsman and Servicesure.”
Paul Dineen, Head of Servicesure,
explained: “The Servicesure ‘Autocentre
in the motor industry calendar, where we
shine the spotlight on beacons of brilliance
and promote examples of the hard work
and outstanding contributions made by
businesses within our growing network.
We are once again very pleased to see
so many great illustrations of how our
Servicesure garages have helped motorists
these achievements together has made for
a very memorable ceremony.”
CHARITYEVENTS
Garage Hive group raises over
£12,000 for Ben
The community behind Garage Hive has rallied together in a remarkable display
of unity and support, raising an incredible £12,000 for industry charity, Ben.
The donation, a collective effort from
the entire community and its partners,
is an accumulation of a charity hike
fundraiser, kind-hearted contributions, and
proceeds from The Blend’s 2023 annual
conference and networking event.
The charity hike took place amidst the
breathtaking landscape of the Peak District
on 11th October. Undeterred by the wind
and rain, more than 50 individuals from
the community booted-up to smash the
£5,000 donation target. The team covered
a gruelling 19.3 kilometres, with an elevation
gain of 713 meters, as they tackled the
Kinder Scout and Mam Tor Circular route.
“What an amazing day. I couldn’t be
prouder of everyone involved,” said Alex
Lindley Director of Garage Hive. “It was
bloody hard work, especially with the
weather, so I’d like to thank all for their
generous donations.”
Ben, the charity for those working in
the automotive sector, provides critical
assistance to individuals facing challenging
times, offering financial aid, mental health
support, and practical assistance to
automotive industry workers and their
families.
“The amount raised for Ben will
undoubtedly make a significant difference
in the lives of those who need it most
within our industry,” said Ray Dilsons,
Managing Director of Garage Hive. “This
incredible achievement reflects our shared
commitment to giving back and supporting
one another.”
A cash injection of £2,478 from The Blend
profit, together with partner contributions
and individual donations, saw the total
amount raised exceed all expectations.
Following on from the success of this year’s
efforts, the community anticipates it to
become an annual event.
Record-breaking funds
raised for Bangers4Ben
Messe Frankfurt UK, organisers of UK Garage and Bodyshop Event
(UKGBE) has completed the 2023 Bangers4Ben rally, which raised
a combined £47,500 for automotive mental health charity, Ben.
UKGBE’s team, the Dublin Driving Dolls, took
on the 2023 edition of the madcap rally from
7 to 10 October in Ireland. The team travelled
1,500 miles over four days in their very own
barbie-themed ‘banger’ – and helped to
raise £3,000 that has contributed towards
the incredible amount raised for the charity
and UKGBE partner.
A total of 38 teams competed in the
madcap rally, including UKGBE’s Dublin
Driving Dolls, made up of UKGBE’s Alex
Jones, LKQ Euro Car Part’s Karena Shahid
and established aftermarket business owners
Louise Baker and Rachel Murray.
The team started from Holyhead to cross
the Irish Sea to Dublin, hitting the winding
roads of Ireland, before completing the tour
back in Dublin to board the ferry back to
Blighty.
The driving doll’s banger made it
through the whole rally this year without a
breakdown. Alex Jones, marketing director
at Messe Frankfurt UK, organisers of
Automechanika Birmingham and UKGBE says:
“We had the best time; we met so many
amazing people during the trip, old friends
and making new ones, and there was so much
natural interest along the route from people
– we even got donations handed to us when
we stopped.”
Bangers4Ben was created to raise
essential funds for the charity; all
entrants are required to pay a £1,050
entry fee and buy a car for less than
£750. Teams are encouraged to
participate in fancy dress and decorate
their vehicles however they choose. All
cars are then be auctioned off after
the mission is complete to raise even more
funds for the charity.
Louise Baker owns independent garage,
Womanic, which she opened in 2016,
and has over 20 years of experience ‘on
the spanners’, and along with teammate,
25-year-old, freelance refinisher
specialising in the automotive industry,
Rachel Murray, they spent their time in the
lead up to the event working tirelessly to
get the ‘banger’ ready.
“We had a mad rush trying to get the car
finished on time, but it was all worth it when
we finally got on the ferry to start the trip.
We had another incredible rally, this time
with a brilliant bunch of ladies on board and
we raised a fantastic amount for Ben. Roll
on Bangers4Ben 2024!”
Messe Frankfurt, organisers of UKGBE,
also held not one, but two big breakfast
events for Ben recently at the Messe
Frankfurt headquarters in Surrey. Offering
staff a delicious breakfast of pastries,
bagels and fruit, and asking for donations
in return. These events, along with
participation in Bangers4Ben, helped
contribute towards the £45,000 that has
been donated to the charity.
During the Bangers4Ben rally, Ben charity
was able to answer 340 requests for help,
gave out 23 urgent food grants, received
24 direct mental health cases from the
helpline and completed 40 mental health
assessments.
Alex Jones continues: “Donations to the
Ben charity helps to fund the critical work
it does in the automotive industry. We’re
delighted to have been able to contribute
essential donations to the fantastic amount
they raised this year. Thanks to everyone
who donated – and to Ben for organising a
brilliant event.”
Striking van wrap drives
Home Power Partnership
KNIPEX Spring Hose
Clamp Pliers:
the timesaving tool for
the Garage workshop
A striking van wrap design is being used to drive home the
developing association between leading European O/E battery
manufacturer, Banner, and The Shortis Group, one of the UK’s
foremost automotive parts supply and fitting centre specialists.
With both parties having entered into a major new product
distribution agreement earlier this year, two bespoke
Citroen Berlingo vans are now set to become a familiar
sight whilst servicing The Shortis Group’s EU Linco customers,
primarily in the Lowestoft and Basildon localities. And having been
co-branded to feature Banner’s powerful and iconic ‘Wall Street’
bull and the familiar branding of EU Linco, the eye catching van wraps
certainly make a bold statement.
Adding to the poignancy of this latest development, the official
handover of the two vans coincided with a visit to the UK by Banner’s
CEO, Andreas Bawart, who was accompanied by Franz Märzinger,
Head of Sales and Marketing. Indeed it was a coming together of two
heads of separate family run and owned businesses, with Richard
Shortis, Managing Director of the Shortis Group, also being present
at the handover.
Joining a fleet of in excess of 180 vans, the Banner branded
Berlingos will be used to service customers with over 130,000 stock
lines of off-the-shelf and immediately available automotive parts
Including the Banner Battery range.
Commenting on the new van wraps, Richard Shortis said: “The
vans not only look amazing, they serve to promote the already
excellent relationship that is developing between the two family
owned businesses. And whilst the overall style of design echoes
that adopted across our van delivery fleet, the Banner Bull certainly
makes its presence felt visually. Not surprisingly, we are looking
forward to working ever more closely with Banner in continuing
to give our customers access to the Banner Battery range that is
revered here in the UK, across Europe and beyond at O/E level.”
Banner’s Commercial CEO, Andreas Bawart added: “Handing
over the vans following the visit to meet with Richard and his team
was certainly a highlight of our trip to the UK. We are delighted
with how our relationship with the Shortis Group has developed so
progressively in such a short space of time and I would like to thank
our UK Country Manager, Lee Quinney and his team for their efforts
in supporting the partnerships rollout this far. We are confident
that the successful and mutually beneficial relationship will go from
strength-to-strength.”
The Shortis Group is supplying Banner’s extensive automotive
battery programme through its established EU and EU Linco motor
factors, with both Duracell and Banner stocked at its Fast-Fit and
Wilco Motosave fitting bays, as well as at selected Wilco Motor
Spares locations.
With a trading history of nearly 60 years, The Shortis Group enjoys
a turnover in excess of £46m, employs more than 600 enthusiastic
staff, and owns and operates over 180 vehicles with more than 100
trading locations.
The Spring Hose Clamp Pliers from KNIPEX is a tool
that can quickly open, move or remove many sizes
of hose clamp in tight and confined areas around
the engine.
Conventional pliers can generally only be used for a
specific type of clamp, meaning a change of tools every
time a new type of clamp is encountered. However, the
KNIPEX Spring Hose Pliers can grip standard, space saving and
spring wire hose clamps as well as spring band clamps between
the diameter range of 0-70mm, all with a high transmission of
manual force.
A key feature which makes the Pliers so versatile is the
maximum jaw opening of 80mm, which allows a clamping range
of more than 40mm. Thanks to this and the high standards of
KNIPEX engineering, fine ergonomics and a non-slip plastic
coating, excellent leverage can be achieved which allows clamps
to be opened easily and safely without the need for great
manual effort.
The KNIPEX Spring Hose Clamp Pliers have a slim head and
rotating jaw inserts so that clamps can be handled safely and
flexibly from any position and in confined spaces. As a result,
the position of the pliers to the ring can be changed when the
ring is clamped.
The 85 51 250 AF version of the KNIPEX Spring Hose Pliers
come equipped with a clever locking device which secures the
pliers in place when the clamp is under tension. The clamp can
then be moved quickly and conveniently over hoses (even when
they are twisted) and “parked” in a suitable place. A mechanic’s
hands then become free to work simply and safely on the
tensioned clamp.
Whether the work is on the air intake, cooling system, charged
air or the water return flow or on the thermostat, fuel pipes or
heating, the KNIPEX Spring Hose Clamp Pliers are the ideal tool
wherever clamps or rings are used to connect hoses.
