Treatment Philosophy
An individual is much more than their addiction.
Our addiction treatment focuses on the whole person.
Our philosophy is focused on individualized, evidence-based
programming that is designed to go deeper than just treating the
addiction alone. By identifying and addressing factors such as
anxiety, depression and chronic pain, we go beyond the surface to
comprehensively treat the root cause of substance abuse. Our medical
and psychiatric experts help individuals understand the source of their
issues, so each patient can overcome and be successful managing their
new life in recovery.
Addiction is a very different experience for men and women—from its
roots, to behaviors, and to contributing factors. This is why our genderresponsive
therapy is a dynamic element of our treatment philosophy.
Programs at The Rose and The Star of Lakeview are designed to meet each
gender’s unique needs. Every facet of these programs addresses gender
differences, environmental factors, relationships, social tendencies and
community activities—and how they impact their recovery.
Our Mission
We are a passionate team of Difference Makers who empower
profound recovery through exceptional, dynamic, and evidence-based
care for individuals and their families.
I have learned a TON about myself.
I feel like I’m way more equipped to deal
with my addiction and life in general
with all the tools I’ve gained.
GENDER RESPONSIVENESS AT
The Rose of Lakeview
The Rose of Lakeview is our treatment program for
women dealing with addiction and potential
co-occurring disorders. Our women’s facility provides
all levels of care from medically monitored detox and
inpatient residential to intensive outpatient programs.
All treatment takes place on campus.
THE CLINICAL PROGRAM
The Rose clinical program features the Women’s Integrated Treatment
(WIT) model developed by Dr. Stephanie Covington. This approach
responds to the cultural, addiction, and trauma issues that often arise
for women in treatment. Our masters-level, licensed clinicians are
trained in both addiction and mental health disorders. Our integrative
health approach incorporates the body, mind, and spirit, featuring small
therapeutic groups with an average ratio of 10:1.
TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE
We know treating trauma is essential to helping women recover. Studies
indicate that 70 to 90 percent of women in addiction treatment have
experienced at least one significant traumatic event in their past. Because
trauma is often a root component of women’s substance use, we begin to
address it during treatment in a safe, gender-responsive facility.
The staff is trained in trauma-informed care. This includes a trauma
assessment, grounding skills, group and individual process, Eye
Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (if appropriate), art and
music therapy, assignments, and referrals for post-treatment care.
Since some patients may not be ready for trauma work at Lakeview,
we assess each individually.
A SAFE AND NURTURING SPACE
The Rose of Lakeview is designed so that the space itself contributes to the
recovery process. Our accommodations will not be mistaken for hospital
rooms. Instead, they have the warm atmosphere of a cozy apartment.
Each semiprivate room is spacious, offering a home-like environment
with beautiful bedding, a desk, wardrobes, and even individual boards
where personal affects can be displayed. The rooms are close to attending
doctors, nurses, and clinical therapists 24 hours a day.
GENDER RESPONSIVENESS AT
The Star of Lakeview
The Star of Lakeview is our men’s addiction and
co-occurring treatment facility. All levels of care—
including medically monitored detox, inpatient
residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive
outpatient program—take place on campus at the Star.
THE CLINICAL PROGRAM
The Star clinical program is individualized and welcoming. Our masterslevel,
licensed clinicians are trained in both addiction and mental health
disorders. Responding to the unique needs of men, we have adopted
the Helping Men Recover curriculum by Dr. Stephanie Covington. This
clinical approach helps men focus on the impact of male socialization
during the recovery process, their relational needs, and the issues of
trauma and abuse.
REDEFINING TYPICAL MALE EXPERIENCES
Many aspects of men’s social lives involve the use of substances,
particularly alcohol. Men in recovery must focus on learning to
participate in social activities without the use of drugs and alcohol.
The men’s program is designed to help redefine male experiences.
For example, the men’s dining room resembles a restaurant, with
big-screen TVs and dark wood decor. Because such an environment
would normally be a trigger for substance abuse, it is important that
men learn to enjoy such spaces without feeling the need to use a
substance. In our dining room, they discover that it is possible to
watch—and enjoy—a football game without consuming alcohol
or drugs. And, more importantly, they train their minds and bodies
not to associate such environments with substance use.
How the Campus
Contributes to Recovery
Our campus is intentionally designed to empower
recovery in unique ways.
Our medical and clinical facilities contribute directly to
patient’s health needs, while the rest of our campusincluding
our residences, dining rooms and quiet
spaces play a significant role in shaping recovery.
ALL THE FEATURES OF A LUXURY RETREAT
Walk the Labyrinth at The Rose, located in the outdoor meditation
garden. Hugged by beautiful, mature oak trees native to North Florida,
this special feature is included to help women heal, learn how to let
go, help guide them through decision making, and illuminate their new
purpose.
The Dining room is a vibrant, relaxing space with family-style dining
to foster a community setting. It also provides meals that support the
nutritional importance of recovery for our patients.
Leisure spaces and therapeutic rooms for individual and group
therapy are designed to enhance a feeling of safety and comfort so
patients can learn to connect with one another and focus on what’s
important: their own healing and recovery.
The Women’s Spa is a communal space designed to help women
connect with one another and learn how to adopt self-care practices.
Recreational spaces feature a basketball court, a small putting green,
a comprehensive 10,000 sq. ft. wellness center, a lap pool, and a yoga
studio. All of these contribute to the physical wellness of recovery for
men and women.
HOW THE CAMPUS CONTRIBUTES TO RECOVERY
Establishing an exercise regimen in early recovery can
significantly decrease the likelihood of relapse and
allows patients to improve themselves physically
and mentally.
FITNESS AND WELLNESS
Leading a healthy lifestyle while in treatment reduces feelings of stress,
anxiety, and depression common to patients. While at Lakeview Health,
patients enroll in gender-specific cardio, strength, and circuit training
classes coached by certified fitness instructors, and have access to our
registered dietitian. Our 10,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art wellness
center houses:
• Six different types of cardio equipment • Indoor running track
• Over ten different weight machines • Outdoor swimming pool
• Full dumbbell rack
• Yoga studio
ADVANCED WELLNESS LECTURE SERIES
Patients engage in a weekly wellness lecture series that complements
their fitness goals. Facilitated by our fitness instructors, patients learn
more about sports nutrition, proper exercise techniques, human
anatomy, and the difference between cardio and strength training.
Interactive activities and hands-on cooking demos are included to help
develop nutrition and wellness goals that can boost self-confidence and
help patients adopt a healthy lifestyle that contributes to their recovery.
Expressive & Experiential
Therapies
Addiction treatment at Lakeview Health goes well
beyond counseling and group meetings. Our experiential
and expressive therapy programs offer patients unique
ways to understand their addiction and work on coping
and recovery skills. These alternative treatments are
an excellent complement to conventional therapies that
form the cornerstone of our clinical program.
EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES
Expressive therapies give people the opportunity to reconnect with
relaxation, self-reflection, leisure, and healthy fun without the need for
intoxicants. As individuals begin to establish healthy coping skills and
explore activities that bring joy, they’ll also likely start to feel more
confident in various aspects of daily life. Developing, or re-establishing
their authentic self fosters spiritual wellness.
Recreational Therapy
This treatment modality is based on a philosophy of reinforcing recovery
concepts through activities that support the mind, body, and spirit.
Seeking to improve physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual
functioning, recreational therapy encourages patients to fully engage in
life. Here, they learn to replace intoxicants through a variety of healthy
coping skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Music Therapy
Music therapy can provide avenues for improved communication,
particularly in patients who find it difficult to express their feelings. This
therapeutic process allows patients the opportunity to be introspective
and to become more comfortable with their feelings through lyrics,
tempo, and rhythm.
Art Therapy
Patients transform and engage within a creative and spiritual
awakening as they draw, paint, sculpt, and create. People can express
themselves differently and sometimes more efficiently on paper or
canvas than through verbal communication. Tying in themes related
to recovery, patients use art therapy to explore their inner thoughts,
strengths, character defects, and methods of preventing relapse, in turn
promoting a supportive and positive regard for themselves and others.
EXPERIENTIAL & EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES
EXPERIENTIAL THERAPIES
Equine-Assisted Therapy
Horses are known to mirror the emotions of those near them, and our
Equine-Assisted Therapy helps patients deepen the understanding of themselves
in a series of exercises with these amazing animals. Working collaboratively
with an Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA)-trained
team of specialists and addiction professionals, patients learn individualized
techniques as they experiment and creatively problem-solve.
Surf Therapy
When learning to balance on a board, how do you position yourself
in harmony with the elements to stay upright? This is one of the many
metaphors used to embrace important challenges faced in everyday life.
Our Surf Therapy is a disciplined activity that encourages patients to clear
their minds and learn to experience the “flow” while striving for patience,
perseverance, strength, and insight. This innovative approach promotes
the need to create a life in balance with recovery, helping to identify
personal triggers and to celebrate the achievement of living one day
at a time. Certified surf instructors and trained clinicians teach patients
how to manage frustration, increase tolerance, adopt perseverance,
and build self-confidence.
A phenomenal experience that took me
away from my cravings and addictive
behaviors. It taught me I can have fun
sober! It’s amazing and awesome. Thank
you, Lakeview Health, for your top level
staff and care. You’ve changed my life
and I am forever grateful.
Levels of Treatment
We create a comprehensive, individualized recovery plan to specifically
address co-occurring disorders and/or physical issues that arise during
any phase of treatment. With full support from our expert staff, we are
equipped to handle addiction-related medical or psychiatric problems
an individual may encounter during their stay with us and beyond. For
specialty and advanced medical care, we partner with Mayo Clinic in
Jacksonville, Florida.
Most Intensive
24/7 Medically-Monitored Detoxification—Full-time, onsite boardcertified
doctors and nurses provide around-the-clock supervision.
Inpatient Rehabilitation—Inpatient rehabilitation is a continuation
of medically supervised treatment for those who need an extended
amount of time to stabilize from withdrawal symptoms. Our onsite
medical team is available 24/7 to help individuals remain safe and
comfortable.
Residential Treatment—Residential treatment provides time to
focus on recovery, deepen connections within the Lakeview Health
community, and incorporate the components of each individual’s
recovery plan that work best for them.
EVIDENCE-BASED THERAPIES
Our treatment includes gender-responsive, trauma-informed modes
of time-tested treatment verified by decades of scientific research.
During the program, patients participate in:
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT teaches ways to find
connections between thoughts, feelings and actions to become
aware of how each of these plays a part in recovery.
• Motivational Interviewing: When a therapist teaches a recovering
individual to find the determination to make whatever changes are
needed to overcome his or her addiction.
• Family Therapy: Proven to reduce stress and relapse rates while
improving psychiatric symptoms and medication adherence.
• Psychodynamic-Oriented Psychotherapy: A therapist helps the
individual in recovery to identify the underlying cause(s) of addiction,
then addresses specific emotions to prevent them from becoming triggers.
• Gestalt Therapy: Through this method, the individual acknowledges
their control over their actions and behaviors, realizing they are the only
accountable person for themselves and the only one who can change.
• Use of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT): Our medical team
uses MAT as needed throughout the detoxification process and as
appropriate for continued treatment.
These evidence-based therapies form a solid foundation for sustained
recovery from addiction and related mental health disorders—providing
structure, insight, support, and skill-building.
Partial Hospitalization Treatment—Individuals live in off-campus
provided gender-separate, supervised apartments and attend full-day
treatment on-campus. Transportation to and from campus is provided.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment—Structured schedules allow for
individuals to practice recovery skills with the support of the Lakeview
Health staff. Transportation to and from campus is provided.
GENDER-RESPONSIVE TREATMENT
The causes of addiction tend to be different in men and women,
so we’ve designed different treatment methods to appropriately
and uniquely address each gender. Every aspect of our treatment
program—the facility design, the hiring of staff, the way the program
is structured, and the content of therapeutic interventions—ensures it
addresses the particular needs of both women and men.
Men and women who enter gender-specific alcohol
and substance use treatment programs tend to stay
in treatment longer and have better outcomes
than those who don’t.
PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM
The Professionals Program is designed specifically for professionals, such
as doctors, commercial airline pilots and staff, lawyers, safety-sensitive
occupations, and executives of all industries seeking treatment for
addiction. Our Professionals Program addresses the following areas to
get individuals back to their work, family, and social life.
• Professional Impairment
• Professional Boundaries
• Monitoring
• Vocation Impacts
• Relapse Prevention
• Professional Health and Wellbeing
SPECIALTY PROGRAMS
PAIN RECOVERY
Treatment most often prescribed for managing chronic pain makes
a very complex problem even more complicated, both for patients
in recovery and the physicians treating addiction. As a result, we’ve
developed an integrative multi-modal program designed specifically
for patients in recovery from alcohol, opioid, and substance abuse
disorders who are also dealing with chronic pain.
Partnering with Lakeview Health, individuals receive
a customized pain recovery plan, tailored by our clinical
team to best meet their needs. For those struggling with
chronic pain, our pain recovery services include cuttingedge
strategies to successfully manage chronic pain
while working toward total health and sobriety.
MULTI LEVEL PAIN RECOVERY PROGRAM
The one-two-three punch of chronic pain, the medications used to treat
it, and substance use can create a destructive cycle of suffering that’s
challenging to break. Our multi-modal approach can lift patients out of
that cycle and provide the tools necessary to live the life one wants to live.
Our chronic pain recovery component of your treatment plan includes
three elements:
1. A healthy physical activity regimen that does not aggravate pain
2. Non-addictive, non-habit-forming medications that treat the neural
pathways associated with chronic pain
3. Stress management techniques and lifestyle strategies, helping one
return to typical daily activities before they were interrupted by pain
SPECIALTY PROGRAMS
FAMILY PROGRAM
Weekly phone or on-site sessions with the primary therapist are
provided to keep families current on their loved one’s treatment
progress. Family visitation is allowed each weekend at designated
times.
At the end of treatment, families are engaged in a 3-day family workshop
facilitated by licensed marriage and family therapists who help them
navigate their recovery journey. The Family Program explores:
• The role of the family in supporting their loved one in early recovery
following treatment
• How to manage codependency and communication issues
• How to seek additional supportive resources, including Al-Anon and
other 12-step programs for family members
ALUMNI PROGRAM
Lakeview Health alumni are an integral part of the ongoing support
for those in early recovery. While in active treatment and well beyond,
the alumni team and network are guides who share personal stories
and a sense of hope.
Navigating recovery can be difficult, that’s why we nurture a robust
alumni network to support individuals at every stage of the recovery
process. Our alumni are over 20,000 strong and act as a positive force
in the local community and across the United States, while also helping
to support all newcomers or those in hard times.
Upon leaving Lakeview Health, patients are invited to participate in alumni
activities, including:
• Monthly support groups
• Sober, fun outings
• Social media engagement
• Tele-Aftercare meetings
• Area alumni chapter groups
• Volunteer opportunities
Following Up
After Treatment
CERTIFIED RECOVERY COACHES
After leaving Lakeview Health, Certified Recovery Coaches check
in and help navigate any concerns or issues. Our Certified Recovery
Coaches are available for on-going support, along with the active and
engaged alumni network.
Measuring
Outcomes
Lakeview Health partners with a third-party organization, Vista
Research Group, to track and report treatment outcomes.
IN TREATMENT
Individuals in recovery participate in Vista’s INSIGHT Addiction
progress monitoring research in which they are screened for
depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, suicidal ideation,
and self-harming behavior shortly after intake, with this information
immediately being provided to their counselors. Intermittently
thereafter, counselors receive reports that show the severity
of the symptoms of various disorders each patient is struggling
with as well as the strength and frequency of any cravings they feel, the
quality of relationships with their closest family members, and their
satisfaction with treatment.
AFTER TREATMENT
Vista Research Group facilitates a RECOVERY 20/20 post-treatment
survey. Patients are contacted approximately one month, three months,
