By Amanda Wilson
he American Dream consists of opportunities for oneself and
one’s descendants, of an open horizon with room to grow. During
the twentieth century men, and later women, were urged to get
a university degree to get ahead. Yet the American Dream, sold in
the form of a bachelor’s or master’s degree, complete with visions of
a corporate position in a corner office space in which one is set until
retirement, doesn’t always deliver.
While success stories of university-educated professionals abound, so too do the
challenges of the debt-ridden, unemployed, underemployed, and career-stagnant.
The average student loan debt of a 2017 four-year public university graduate was
$26,900. And, 11.1 percent of college graduates in 2018 were underemployed, either
working part-time but desiring full-time employment, or opting out of searching for
full-time employment after a period of actively seeking it. The traditional university path
is good for some people, but skills are what lead to excellent careers and income, says
Robyn Minton-Holmes, Vice President of Workforce Initiatives for the Center of Workforce
Innovations, 2804 Boilermaker Court, Suite E, Valparaiso. “We help people find what
they’re good at and which skills translate to a career. There are many exciting options which
lead to a quicker path to employment with good wages than just seeking a long term college
degree. There are amazing apprenticeship opportunities where you earn while you learn. It’s
the best way to learn your craft while providing access to income quickly, and wages increase
as competency increases.” CWI is a multi-management nonprofit workforce development
organization in Northwest Indiana. While remaining a driver of workforce development, CWI’s
strategic priorities are on empowering its regional workforce through high quality career advising,
skill building and efforts to increase post-secondary credential attainment. Minton-Holmes points
out that entry-level wages in many skilled trade jobs average between $19 and $30 an hour with
experienced tradespeople often earning $42 to $53 an hour.
“Hands-on experience is very valuable these days,” says John Carr, business representative at the Indiana/
Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters. “Understanding what works and what can be done in the
field can lead to unlimited opportunities in the trades. We offer a four-year apprenticeship program where
the apprentices come through and earn several industry certifications, as well as an associate’s degree >>
>> from Ivy Tech, at no extra cost to the apprentice.” The IKORCC
represents more than 35,000 people in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, as
well as parts of West Virginia and Tennessee. Specialized training for each
trade is provided through its training centers, and the IKORCC works with
contractors to provide any training needed for any specific job. Carpenters
work their way up to become foremen, superintendents, project managers,
and even business owners, Carr says. The IKORCC recently opened a
65,000 square-foot state-of-the-art training center at 1565 East 70th
Court in Merrillville. Over 600 apprentices throughout Northwest Indiana
are currently enrolled in the program, funded by IKORCC members
and contractors, in which the apprentices complete over 650 hours of
classroom training. The IKORCC has articulation agreements with most of
the region’s high schools, and its international training center develops
curriculum for high school building trades programs. Carr says, “This career
connect program can allow a direct entry into our four-year apprenticeship
for interested students. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program,
the apprentices become journeymen and earn an associate’s degree from
Ivy Tech. Furthering their training and education
to meet industry standards is paramount to
competing in a very competitive industry. We must
be the best skilled craftsmen the industry has to offer
to make our contractors competitive.”
Despite the high wages and career opportunities
available, there is an urgent need for skilled tradespeople
including carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and operating
engineers. According to a Deloitte study, there will be an
estimated 2.4 million job vacancies in the skilled trades by
2028. And, the workforce is aging: forty percent of skilled
tradespeople throughout the region and nationwide are aged
45 years or older, says Minton-Holmes. By 2025, in Indiana alone,
there will be over one million job openings due to retirement and
the creation of new jobs, explains Aco Sikoski, chancellor at Ivy Tech
Community College in Valparaiso, pointing to statistics provided by the
6 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | SPRING 2020

Indiana Commission of Higher Education. “That’s why Governor Holcomb enacted free training
for Hoosiers and reimbursements to employers through the Next Level Jobs program,” Sikoski
says. “The opportunities in these growing fields are diverse and include manufacturing,
construction, healthcare, information technology, and transportation and logistics.” He adds
that the increase in construction spending and the demand for alternative energy sources
means that employment of electricians is projected to grow faster than other occupations
on average. And, the demand for skilled healthcare workers goes beyond the wellpublicized
nursing shortage and includes certified nursing assistants, healthcare
specialists, EMTs and paramedics.
Community colleges such as Ivy Tech Community College provide the credentials
needed for many in-demand skilled trade careers. These credentials are a smart
career investment because they can lead to a high-paying job with minimal
training and cost, Sikoski says. He recommends that anyone considering
a career in the skilled trades start by scheduling a tour at the Valparaiso
Ivy Tech campus at 3100 Ivy Tech Drive. “We offer career development
services and tools that can assist folks with finding a path that’s fitting for
their future. Don’t hesitate to talk to people in your industry of choice to
learn about opportunities and expectations. A great career is within
reach, and it doesn’t have to take a long time to achieve or cost a lot
of money.” Sikoski points to NIPSCO as an example of a high-paying
regional employer, who has hired 40-45 Ivy Tech Students for
various positions. Students graduating from Ivy Tech Community
College with a technical certificate in energy technology/power
plant are eligible to apply for those positions. >>
SKILLFULLY WORKING FOR VALPO’S ECONOMY
>> Employing people in muchneeded
skilled trade jobs doesn’t
just help those employed; it helps the
surrounding economy too. “Skilled trades
represent a trendsetter for the economy as
a whole. Thriving skilled trades are frequently
accompanied by a thriving economy,” says
Minton-Holmes. “Sixty-nine percent of the GDP
nationally is related to personal consumption, so
a high wage is important to the economy. More
jobs filled with more highly paid people mean more
resources to contribute to consumption. So the more
jobs in skilled trades occupations, the better it is for the
growth of our economy.” Minton-Holmes has over 30 years
of experience working for nonprofits, and she’s been with the
Center of Workforce Innovations since July of 2008 because
she’s passionate about what the company stands for: “If you
want to help a family, increase their access to better wages. Wages
are what lifts a family up and encourages them to be active in our
community.” She suggests that those interested in a skilled trade
career get in touch with those in their particular field of interest to
talk about opportunities, needed attributes, educational requirements,
skills sought, and how expected wages would line up to desired lifestyle.
Salaries in the big trades provide solid middle-class wages with great benefits, Carr says, with
opportunities to advance through available training and hard work. A journeyman carpenter can
expect to make over $50,000 a year with health care and retirement. “We offer careers, not
jobs. It’s going to be what you make of it. Every apprentice comes in with an opportunity.
It’s up to them to make the most of it. You have to show up every day on time, with a good
attitude, and bust your butt every single day. It’s hard work and not everyone makes it. You
need to have the drive to be successful. It can be a very rewarding career.” These careers
reward the community too, since these professionals are active in the community and
support the businesses that support them. “We help build the quality of life in our
communities. We’re out there coaching our kids’ sports teams and we’re active in our
places of worship. We value quality over quantity, and we spend our hard-earned
wages in our communities.”
Those with solid skills to offer are the ones who build the future one brick, one
facsia board, and one rafter at a time. “Skilled laborers are the backbone of our
local economy,” Sikoski says. “If not for our skilled tradespeople, we couldn’t
build or maintain the infrastructure our communities need to succeed. Think
about all of the skilled trades needed in reinforcing our roads and bridges,
for example. It takes a diverse group of skills to accomplish such a thing,
from engineers to welders, iron workers to carpenters. If we don’t have
enough of a skilled workforce, other industries won’t have their basic
needs met to simply do their jobs. That’s exactly why our priority as
educators should be to partner with local employers to ensure we
offer the right program that’s the right size in the right place for
our communities.”
Building A
STRONG
By Amanda Wilson
NORTHWEST INDIANA’S SKILLED TRADE WORKERS
ARE GOOD FOR BUSINESS AND THE COMMUNITY
ou can’t properly support the future if there aren’t enough qualified
people to help build it. Skilled trade workers, from carpenters
to construction workers and electricians to millwrights, are the
ones who quite literally build and maintain the foundation of our
region. A perfect storm of retiring Baby Boomers, current overall
low unemployment, and younger generations largely steered to
exclusively white-collar professions have led to a critical shortage of
skilled trade workers nationwide and in the region.
“It’s important to have skilled trade workers because we, as a society,
need to be able to make and assemble things,” observes John Walsh,
president of Heat Wagon, 342 N 400 E, Valparaiso. Heat Wagon, which
Walsh purchased from the company founders in 1996, manufactures
and distributes portable construction heaters and accessories. The
company sells wholesale to rental stores and equipment houses across
the country, partners with suppliers outside of the U.S., and provides
tech support and training through Heat Wagon Tech Service Schools.
“We can’t just be a service economy. We need to be able to repair and
fix the things that we produce, and we need to have trained people
across the spectrum to do that.”
Indiana, particularly Northwest Indiana, has long been a stronghold
for skilled trade industries such as construction and manufacturing.
According to the Indiana Business Review, 31.8 percent of the State’s
private sector is comprised of manufacturing and four percent is
comprised of construction. Yet there simply aren’t enough trained
workers to fill the need. “There’s a shortage in the construction work
force mainly due to retirement,” says Joe Coar, consultant for special
project and business development for Tonn and Blank Construction >>
(he served as the company’s vice president of operations
for 25 years before retiring in 2014). “Through apprenticeship
programs the trades have stepped up the training to meet
these needs. I sit on the Joint Apprenticeship and Training
Committee (JATC) Carpenters State Apprenticeship Executive
Board as secretary treasurer. We’ve taken in over 500 new
apprentices in the past two years and will continue to do so.
We must give our workforce the tools they need as we all
move forward. And, we believe that is why our apprenticeship
programs are so valuable.”
Tonn and Blank Construction, 1623 Greenwood Avenue,
Michigan City, has been helping build the region since 1922.
Tonn and Blank, with four offices throughout the State, provides
construction services for healthcare, higher education,
industrial and commercial customers. Notable region clientele
includes Franciscan Alliance, Urschel Laboratories, Valparaiso
University, Horizon Bank, and Sullair, just to name a few. “Skilled
trades are very important for all contractors, certainly Tonn and
Blank,” Coar says.
“They’re trained in our apprenticeship programs and by the
contractors they work for. That combination is the key to the
success of our future workforce. For most general contractors,
the supervision of projects is controlled by the carpenters
because they’re so versatile. The knowledge they gain by
the type of projects they’re exposed to as their careers move
forward brings a lot of value in the field.
You’ll also find this to be true of all specialty trades such
as electricians, plumbers, pipe fitters, sheet metal and
iron workers; masons, brick layers, and boiler makers.”
Walsh, who holds a bachelor’s of science degree in civil
engineering and an MBA, stresses that white-collar
professionals with extensive educational backgrounds are
important to the regional and national economy. Yet, he adds,
an overemphasis on a “one-size-fits-all” career track has
led to a lop-sided economy where there are too many
candidates seeking jobs in the service sector and not
enough candidates to fill skilled trade positions. “Not every >>
>> kind of career appeals to everyone.
Everyone has a particular niche to fill,
and we need people in all
career categories.
We need a mix of professionals to support each
other, and right now we’re light on skilled trade
workers. Many in the younger generations have
gone more to the service side, and people
aren’t doing as much physical labor in general.
Continuing education is a good thing, but it
doesn’t have to be a four-year college degree.
You just want to be in a position through training
and continuing education to have choices.”
Much of the solution to the shortage of skilled
trade workers lies in ensuring that people
know there are viable careers available in the
skilled trades and avenues to obtain them. “I truly believe in career
path alignment for our future workers,” Coar says. “It is true for all
opportunities which include the trades because we have a workforce
available to us through our school systems. We need to make sure that
students are exposed to these opportunities as they go through their
education, at least from seventh grade through their senior year of
high school.” He explains that the carpenter apprenticeship program
Ivy Tech. After graduation, each journeyman
receives a carpentry certificate and an
associate’s degree from Ivy Tech. And, he adds,
between the trades and the contractors there’s
no cost to their apprentices for their training
during the four-year apprenticeship.
“I’ve been blessed because I was given the
chance to get involved with the carpenters
apprenticeship program through the vocational
program offered to me two years after I
graduated in 1965 from Elston High School
in Michigan City. In our day, we were able to
choose the career path that fit us.”
A diversity of jobs employing people across
the career spectrum is essential to a balanced,
thriving community. “Locally and nationally,
our economy is out of balance,” Walsh points out. “We need a more
diverse group of workers, particularly skilled trade workers. There’s
no work for lawyers or accountants to do if there aren’t any clients to
take care of. A strong workforce here will extend to volunteer groups
like Kiwanis, the Rotary Club, Little League, park volunteers, and
charitable boards. We need to get back to the basics of building and
making things here. Thankfully, these kinds of jobs are coming back
to the region.”
PORTER COUNTY CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER GIVES STUDENTS
AN EARLY CAREER ADVANTAGE
ou won’t find idle students lining the hallways at the Porter County
Career and Technical Center at 1005 North Franklin Street in
Valparaiso. Indeed, the students in the school’s career and technical
education classes – open to eleventh and twelfth grade students
in Porter County public high schools and Hobart High School – are
making inroads into a future career. Students here can earn a Core
40 with Technical Honors diploma as well as dual high school and
college credits. The center has programs in agriculture, architecture
and construction; arts, AV technology and communication; business
and marketing; education and training; health sciences; hospitality and
human services; information technology; manufacturing; public safety,
and transportation.
We talked to program graduates and students who are currently
enrolled for a glimpse into how the Center’s programs help pave the
way from high school to career.
Harrison Draves, Class of 2012
Lead System Specialist at Johnson Controls
“I went to Porter County Career and Technical Center because I’ve
always been a hands-on kind of person. I built a house with my dad
and uncle when I was twelve years old. I learned to do everything
when I built that house, from wiring receptacles to plumbing. I’m also
good with computers. I had a job in IT with Valpo schools right off the
bat after graduation.
I wanted to work in solar power right from the beginning. I developed
a solar ‘follower’ my senior year that produced power for lights and a
display case in the school. I loved the challenging aspect of the handson
programming. It’s cool to see how the trades come together at the
school. I continue to help with the solar project, and teach the new
students in the electronics class on occasion.
I have an associate’s degree in electrical engineering and computer
technology from Purdue North Central (now Purdue Northwest) in
Westville. A bachelor’s degree is more expensive, and I hated school.
I prefer to use my hands. Having an associate’s degree in your field is
always recommended.
If you’re interested in a career in the trades, first figure out what you
want to do; then, get into a trade program.
When I was fifteen and sixteen years old, I didn’t know what to do with
my life. The career center was free, part of high school, and just two
hours out of my day. It let me know if I was truly interested in my career
of interest or not. At a minimum, this prepares you for the future. My
first year of college, I was set and way ahead of my peers. “
Truly Exceptional Events
Happen
Here
Camryn Santer, Class of 2019
Hair Artist
“I’m a cosmetologist, which essentially means I do anything related to
hair, makeup, and nails. I’ve also been educated in spray tans.
I started off at another cosmetology school and didn’t feel like I was
learning a lot or getting the right kind of experience. So, I transferred
to the Career Center at the end of my junior year. I thought the new
teacher and change of environment would help. It was the perfect
fit for me. I loved every minute there. I enjoyed getting to meet new
people and experience hands-on training with an amazing teacher,
a creative environment, and an overall kind staff as a whole at the
center. Being at the Career Center changed my view on education. I
didn’t really enjoy it at my previous school, where I just wanted to get
through it as quickly as possible. When I transferred, I realized I was
going about it in the wrong way. Now as I look back, even though
it isn’t that long ago, I’m so glad for the memories I have and the
experiences I was able to go through.
I chose this career because I grew up in this field. My family lives
above the salon and day spa business that they own. My mom,
grandmother, and aunt all did hair. I never really thought about a ton
of other careers since this career was so natural for me. I love seeing
people get makeovers, with the transformation they bring. I know
that seems like a generic answer, but it’s true. Whether it’s a big
transformation or a little one, as long as they’re happy that’s the
best feeling. It changes their attitude and helps them feel better
about themselves.
I advise people to give whatever career they might be interested in
a try. You never know what you’ll enjoy and there’s nothing to lose. If
you truly love it then it isn’t a job or chore; it’s a passion and career.
Going into vocational classes or skilled trade careers doesn’t make
you less intelligent, as the stereotype goes. It’s a sign that you know
what you want and aren’t afraid to go after it at an earlier age.” >>
CENTER GIVES STUDENTS AN EARLY CAREER ADVANTAGE
>> Leiara Lara, Class of 2020
Health Sciences Program Student
“I’m taking Health Science I and II where I’ll get my certified nursing
assistant license, and will be CPR, first-aid, and stop-the-bleed
certified. I was motivated to be in the health care field because my
sister was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at a young age.
Watching the health care professionals take care of her inspired me to
try and do the same with others.
I plan to study nursing at Indiana University in Bloomington. I plan
on graduating in 2024, and will work as a CNA in college if it can be
flexible with my schedule. I decided to get my CNA license before
college because any experience helps before going into nursing. After
college I plan on working a couple of years before eventually going
back to school to become a nurse practitioner or a nurse anesthetist.
I’d recommend to anyone who’s thinking of getting their CNA license
before college to go for it. You learn a lot, and it brings a lot of job
opportunities and great experience.”
Jamie Briel, Class of 2020
Health Sciences Program Student
“I was never the type of kid who ran away when someone was injured
or if there was blood present. I was the type who wanted to help or
hold their hand to make them feel better. I still remember in fourth
grade running across the pavement with my best friend to get to the
playground when she suddenly fell face first. When we looked, she
had deep wounds on her hands and knees. I yelled for a recess aide to
come help as I held my friend tightly, telling her everything was going
to be okay.
As I began to grow up, it became clear to me that what I wanted to
do for the rest of my life was to help people. There are many types of
nurses, so the hard part was deciding which type I wanted to be. It
wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I decided I wanted
to be an emergency room nurse.
Taking the vocational Health Science II class at the Porter County
Career and Technical Center has only increased my motivation for my
future goals. I’m getting hands-on experience at a nursing home, and
I’ve been given the opportunity to see accidents first-hand riding in the
back of an ambulance with the EMTs at the fire station.
After graduating, I see myself starting my third year at a hospital. From
there, I’ll work my way up to my goal of being an emergency room
nurse. Knowing I have goals and a plan for my future pushes me to be
the best version of myself every day, and this will continue to push me
every day until I fulfill them.”
The Porter County Career and Technical Center holds scheduled open
houses in December, January, and March. To find out more,
>> A LOOK BACK
100 years ago, Valparaiso was just as busy as it is today.
Here are some interesting tidbits taken directly from the newspaper during
this time in 1920, provided by Kevin Pazour at the Porter County Museum.
April 5, 1920
A forty-mile gale blew into
Valparaiso early yesterday,
accompanied by a heavy fall
of snow which obstructed
traffic. Thirteen inches of
snow was recorded. Taxicabs
and automobiles were stalled
in the streets and street car
service put out of commission.
Despite the storm large crowds
attended the Easter services at
various churches.
April 7, 1920
Since March 15, John Gunther,
of Valparaiso, has been
standing daily from 2 to 6
p. m. at the corner of Sixth
and Spring Streets in Los
Angeles, Calif., looking for
two men who took $15,000
of his money in a bunko deal
through fake stock speculation.
According to Gunther, he met
the two men last February.
They worked the old game of
winning on the stock market
and finally told him it would
take $15,000 to take down the
winnings. Gunther returned
to Valparaiso, mortgaged his
farm and borrowed $5,000
of his daughter. The money
was turned over to the men
who reported that the entire
investment had
been lost. They
gave Gunther
$100 and a ticket
to New Orleans.
Gunther said
he surmised he
was a victim of
a “skin” game
and returned
to hunt the
fleecers.
April 22, 1920
Valparaiso University baseball
team swamped Armour
Institute of Chicago at Brown
12 to 2. Several persons were
injured when a temporary
bleacher holding 150 collapsed.
The spectators were thrown
into a mud puddle.
Exploring the Indiana Dunes Area
If a random tourist stopped you on the street
and asked what they should do while visiting
Porter County, what would you say? Of course,
the Indiana Dunes, being the number one
attraction in the state, might be the first thing
that comes to your mind. While the National
Park and State Park are undeniably must-see
attractions, there is so much more to see
and do once you go beyond the beach. The
Indiana Dunes communities, which includes
Valparaiso, have so many hidden gems that
are often overshadowed by our beautiful sand
dunes. We’ve got the Memorial Opera House,
