We need a mix of professionals to support each other, and right now we’re light on skilled trade workers. Many in the younger generations have gone more to the service side, and people aren’t doing as much physical labor in general. Continuing education is a good thing, but it doesn’t have to be a four-year college degree. You just want to be in a position through training and continuing education to have choices.” Much of the solution to the shortage of skilled trade workers lies in ensuring that people know there are viable careers available in the skilled trades and avenues to obtain them. “I truly believe in career path alignment for our future workers,” Coar says. “It is true for all opportunities which include the trades because we have a workforce available to us through our school systems. We need to make sure that students are exposed to these opportunities as they go through their education, at least from seventh grade through their senior year of high school.” He explains that the carpenter apprenticeship program takes four years to complete and includes the degree program through Locally and nationally, our economy is out of balance. And, he adds, between the trades and the contractors there’s no cost to their apprentices for their training during the four-year apprenticeship. “I’ve been blessed because I was given the chance to get involved with the carpenters apprenticeship program through the vocational program offered to me two years after I graduated in 1965 from Elston High School in Michigan City. In our day, we were able to choose the career path that fit us.” A diversity of jobs employing people across the career spectrum is essential to a balanced, thriving community. “Locally and nationally, our economy is out of balance,” Walsh points out. “We need a more diverse group of workers, particularly skilled trade workers. There’s no work for lawyers or accountants to do if there aren’t any clients to take care of. A strong workforce here will extend to volunteer groups like Kiwanis, the Rotary Club, Little League, park volunteers, and charitable boards. We need to get back to the basics of building and making things here.
