CONTRACT and
RESIDENTIAL FABRICS
What a rollercoaster this spring has been. At Pulp, we’ve
kept a strong focus on our clients, whose projects are
all continuing to move forward, while also dealing with
juggling the new reality for all of us. But one thing has
been clear to us all as we’ve gone through this ordeal together -
home has never been more important.
Our homes have become our offices, our schoolrooms, and our
gyms. And we’ve had to use rooms for so many other tasks than
they were designed for!
But more importantly, we’ve all been reminded that home is our
haven, our oasis, and our escape from the world. It is where we
celebrate, make memories, and raise our children. It’s the heart
of who we are.
In this issue, we celebrate what it is to create a home.
We showcase a welcoming project we created in Seattle,
share how we’re adapting to working with clients remotely,
and share some of our favorite things for surviving staying home.

CROSSING BOUNDARIES
PULP DESIGN STUDIOS’ SECOND FABRIC COLLECTION WITH S. HARRIS BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN
THE COMFORT OF RESIDENTIAL AND THE DURABILITY OF COMMERCIAL FABRICS.
The Pulp team has designed a new collection of fabrics with S. Harris that is equally suited for commercial design
projects and for a residential home that needs gorgeously durable fabrics. Despite a worldwide shutdown and
pandemic, Pulp felt it was important to move forward with the debut of their second line that is rolling out
through late spring and early summer.
“So much planning went into this collection
over the last year and although the timing could
be better, moving ahead with the launch helps
support our partners, the reps, and so many
others during this time,” says Carolina Gentry.
“We also want to provide new palettes and
patterns to fuel creativity for designers,” says
Beth Dotolo. “The Pulp team is using the time
during this shut-down to develop new creative
ideas for our projects, and we wanted to spark
creativity for other designers, too, who are still
working and designing for their clients.”
The new fabrics were inspired by meaningful
places around the world, from exotic locales
to cities that inspire the Pulp team to the Pulp
founders’ own neighborhoods. Let’s take a spin
through the new Pulp Design Studios for S.
Harris collection.
NEUTRAL GROUND
Sophisticated and classic, the neutral palette
has a pulled-together urban style. These designs
can blend with brighter colors or stand alone
with bold patterns that show off a wild streak.
Some of our faves in this group include Leopardo,
an animal print with an almost ikat twist, and
Dresden, with artistic brushstrokes that evoke
the dramatic European city.

BLUES BROTHERS
Water colors and complex patterns are key
to this group of fabrics. Fretworks, metallic
details, and waves of blues and greens show
there’s more below the surface than first
meets the eye. Casa Battlo is a perfect example
with its graphic and architectural design in
teal with a river of metal running through its
pattern. We also love the tile pattern in Havana
Herringbone, and the mirage-like design of
Hollywood Heights, named for Carolina’s Dallas
neighborhood.
SPICE MARKET
Pinks, corals, deep reds, and touches of
yellow-gold create the visual cues of gorgeous
sunsets in beautiful destinations, or a spice
market in an enticing bazaar. These designs
range from dramatic patterns that demand
attention to quiet and painterly looks that
draw the eye. It’s hard for us to choose
favorites, but we love the half-moon design on
Haystack Velvet (named for Haystack Rock in
Oregon), the spice-toned and complex Jakar,
and Pokhara, a new neutral that carves a
modern mountain range motif.

Blending two design styles made this Seattle-area house the perfect home
How do you blend two very different design dreams? That was the challenge
our clients gave us when they asked Pulp to take on a ground-up design
build project outside of Seattle. He was drawn to an Acadia lodge style
that reflected the mountains around this country locale. And she wanted
a more refined transitional look that would be the perfect backdrop for entertaining
friends and family.
This is a challenge we love to accept because the Pulp team has a lot of experience at
blending the best of both worlds. So we designed an open-plan interior with warm
woods and gorgeous views of the outdoors, combined with modern touches and
more complex details. Pulp was involved from the ground up, selecting the finishes,
overseeing a complex process of staining the wood in the home, and ensuring that
each room reflected the family’s personality.
The clients, operators of a well-known whiskey distillery, love to entertain, so the
home has public spaces that are open and inviting. For summer soirees, the glass
doors also open to the pool area for seamless indoor-outdoor living.

the melding of this family’s design dreams. The console table is

space. But the Pulp team
developed the idea for a

bar. Now it’s one of the
family’s favorite spaces!

WORK
A first look into a project our team designed REMOTELY,
transforming the home of our client from afar
W
hile most of us are staying at home, we thought we’d
give you a sneak peek into a whole-home project we’ve
been working on! This project is out of town and we’ve
done most of the work remotely with our client. We
were planning on waiting to have the whole home professionally
photographed, but then we thought “Why wait?”! The world needs a
little home inspiration now. So, here you have it. All photographed
with our iphones.

We completely overhauled this Spanish-style home, in Laredo, Texas,
through both a renovation and a full furnishings design, to bring our
client’s home up to a more modern aesthetic, all while keeping the
sentiment of the homes bones in tact.

Our clients, a family with a
new little one, wanted an
all-white and
bright home.
We overhauled the entire home, stripping
away all of the heavy traditional details.
We punched in a ton of contrast
and designed using super functional
textiles to hold up to use, and wear-and-tear.
Every detail was designed with care, specifically
for our clients, working with local craftsman and
tradespeople, as well as artisans around the country.

A Monochrome
HAVEN
The bar we designed, with beautiful natural
stone and custom brass inlaid cabinets,
overhauled the way our clients are able to
entertain. With a more private wine room
and a more open bar area, it turned this
space into a hyper-useable entertainer’s
dream. We can’t wait for the time where our
clients can entertain here again, but for now
it’s a great escape after baby is in bed.

KITCHENS KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING
Kitchens really are the heart of
every home. It’s where families
naturally gather, where meals are
cooked, holidays are celebrated,
and memories are made.
And these days, it’s also where
homework is finished, crafts are
created, and where we begin and
end our days together. The Pulp
team loves to design the perfect
kitchens for our clients. Here are
some tips for keeping your
home’s heart beating for you!
TAKE A SEAT
To keep people comfortable
while they’re working - or
just talking - be sure you
have plenty of seating in the
kitchen. Stools are perfect
for peninsulas and islands,
but chairs pulled around a
small table will work, too!
KEEP IT CLEAR
We like to keep counters clutter-free. That also encourages gathering together, and it
makes room for baking, crafts, and homework. Try to tuck smaller appliances out of the
way and put your spices into a rack in a cabinet or drawer.

TAKE COMMAND
Just off the kitchen you see below, we
added a “command central” space next
to the pantry. Since everyone gathers
in the kitchen, it’s the perfect place
to keep family schedules organized,
store homework assignments, write
reminders, keep lists, and more!
COLOR YOUR WORLD
In the bright and modern kitchen above,
we added bright blue cabinets to reflect
the lakeviews just outside the windows.
But as a special added treat, we painted
the pantry shelves bright orange to add
an element of surprise! Don’t be afraid
to add color to your kitchen - it will spark
joy for you and your family!

There is a lot of natural light in this kitchen, but when the sun goes
down, our clients also can choose from under-counter lights, task
lighting, and ceiling cans.

This kitchen was designed to function
in EVERY way our clients need it to.
Kids can do homework at the island,
or at their custom homework bench,
while their parents prepare meals. And,
there’s even a fun chalkboard wall so
the artists in the family can have a blank
canvas. But that chalkboard also works
for reminders and lists!

Electrical plans aren’t exactly the sexiest thing when it comes to
interior design - but it’s so critical to the room’s functionality. Here’s

They really are the key to the best family rooms because they
encourage snuggling and lounging! But this room also succeeds
because it offers lots of table surfaces for drinks and snacks, and

We love to design game rooms that indulge our clients’ favorite activities - like ping pong (or
table tennis if you’re feeling posh). This room also offers a wet bar with an ice maker and fridge,
perfect for those after-match drinks!

Our clients for this Seattle home had a lot of interests
they wanted to indulge. Inside, we gave them a room
that’s perfect for evening piano recitals. And outside,
we transformed the garage into an extravaganza of play -
with a rock wall, skateboard space, and a gaming area for online sports.

THE STYLE
COMMUNE showcased
our brass-finished
Starburst Pulls against
a weathered gray vanity
for a gorgeous look.
First, just remember that if you’re
painting walls you can always paint over
them! Paint is not expensive, so keep
that in mind and go bold. When you’re
using a dark color on the walls, we like
to use architectural details like molding
or wainscoting to keep the wall from
looking too flat. Those details catch the
light and add dimension. You also want
to use furnishings and accents that will
pop against those dark walls. In the
Dallas study we designed here, we used
lighter toned woods and brass finishes.
They not only look fabulous against the
black, but they also add a lightness to
the look. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
