Pulp Design Studios Designs the Most Inspiring Investments
to Make This a Dream Home for Our Clients
The key to a beautiful dream home isn’t just the gorgeous furnishings
or art that’s selected for each room. The best designers will guide you
to smart investments that will inspire you to live your best life in your
home. Pulp is known for looking at the big picture, for designing your
home holistically so it functions perfectly for you, while also creating those
wow-worthy spaces. In this Dallas new build, Pulp gave a transplant New York
family their very first single-family home after years of apartment living. So
we wanted to be sure it had everything they wanted - and more!
The house has a very modern and chic design that offers a new twist on farmhouse chic.
Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors let in beautiful natural light.
THE BIG PICTURE
Texture and layered wood tones perfect
the mix of updated and vintage styles that
were key to this home. All appliances are
from Thermador.
This family loves to entertain
and welcome family and
friends, so the open spaces
flow into each other in the
great room.
The beamed ceilings seem to flow directly down into the kitchen
cabinetry, creating a modern twist on a traditional element.
Custom cabinetry and a large family island offer function while
the waterfall counter and stunning light fixture from Gabriel Scott
draw all eyes to the design.
14
15

THE BIG PICTURE
A pantry in the kitchen adds bonus storage, which every family needs.
And a nearby desk ensures that there’s a chic place to work from home.
16
Pulp designed the glam custom table in the dining room, as well as the beautiful muscovite wall covering behind the bar.
17

THE BIG PICTURE
An open and light-filled hallway leads to a home office with
a study and fireplace.
The Pulp team’s expertise is in listening to what our clients really want in their homes. The result includes spaces like
this one, where a unique work area was custom-designed for our clients to fit their profession and their tech needs.
18
19

THE BIG PICTURE
One of Pulp’s favorite spaces in this home is the primary
bedroom suite. We love the calm tones and textures - it’s the
perfect place to retreat to after a long day.
The natural world right outside the windows inspired organic
textures and motifs, like the faux bois console table. Pulp also
designed a custom headboard for the bed - you can see a closer
look at this beauty on page 44!
20
21

THE BIG PICTURE
Continuing that modern organic design theme,
the primary bath creates a serene retreat for
these Pulp clients. It includes a free form tub,
a walk-in shower with multiple shower heads
and jets, and dual floating vanities.
22
23

THE BIG PICTURE
When we meet with our clients, we walk
through every single detail of how they live
in their homes. That’s how we knew that
these clients would definitely want to invest
in custom storage for their closets. There are
specific shelves and drawers for shoes, bags,
jewelry, watches, and more.
This is a very family-centric home, full of color
and fun. That includes the whimsical art on the
stairs, and the fabulous game room upstairs.
We made the room seem more cozy with
bold stripes on a tall wall and included some
unexpected details like the artistic table and
super-tufted seating.
24
25

THE BIG PICTURE
The upstairs level also includes a full gym and
laundry, great investments for inspired living!
The kids also have fab spaces, starting with the
neutral bathroom with show-stopping sconces
and personal accessories that make the space
unique and interesting.
Every person in the home should feel like their
rooms reflect who they are. In this boy’s room,
we used wallpaper that highlights a favorite
destination and ball team for this New York
transplant. And in a more modern take on a bunk
room, below, we gave the kids a great space to hang
with friends.
Also, don’t miss another fantastic kid’s bedroom on
page 61, featuring customized neon art.
This family loves outdoor living, so Pulp designed multiple seating and gathering areas to give them outdoor rooms that
are just as chic as the indoor areas. Family favorites include the fire pit and the bed swing that Pulp designed just for them.
You can also see the art that spells out the family mantra in the photo below.
29

ALL
GROWN
UP!
When those all-important life changes happen, Pulp has been lucky enough to have our clients bring us
back to update their homes for new chapters. We had designed a lovely guest bedroom for this
Highland Park project in Dallas when our clients found out they really needed a nursery!
So we gave the room a chic makeover that is now the perfect space for a bundle of joy.
We loved the quiet palette we originally
created for this room, so we kept that color
scheme, but added a few more unexpected
details. We updated the light fixture to a
playful “bubble” design and added wallpaper
to the ceiling to give the little one something
to study from the crib.
The small vestibule just outside the door sets a chic tone, which we wanted to continue into the
new nursery. The only thing that changed here is the view into the bedroom!
30
31

ALL GROWN UP
We swapped out the seating for a glider rocker from
Vanguard, perfect for rocking a baby to sleep. Or for
the family fur baby! We loved the table from Arteriors
so much that it stayed in the room’s design.
One of our favorite finds for the nursery was a
fabulous crib with built-in storage. It also converts
to a toddler bed when the time is right.
32
33

Before &
after
after
Pulp projects range from new builds to renovations to requests for
furnishings and finishes. On this project, we were called in by a fellow
interior designer who had started the project, but wanted Pulp’s help.
It’s so hard to design your own home when you’re the professional
(the Pulp duo can relate!), and she loved our aesthetic. So this project
was about taking the design over the finish line!
The open-area great room is a very large space, so Pulp crafted different zones to create a more intimate setting.
There’s a traditional seating area in front of the television, as well as a conversation area with four swivel chairs.
This room is one of our client’s favorites. She loves all the patterns the Pulp team layered in, as well as the palette. And because
her family includes a dog and kids, we invested in performance fabrics that will hold up to anything the family can throw at them.
34
35

BEFORE & AFTER
after
after
The dramatic powder room design is one of Pulp’s
favorite spaces in the home. The geometric glass
mosaic tile behind the sink is almost like a David
Hicks pattern. It looks like a wallcovering, but is a
bolder and more dimensional design.
The kitchen is a gorgeous modern gathering space. Pulp
brought in modern seating and contemporary pendants
to add a little edge to the more timeless white-kitchen
design. We love those unexpected touches.
36
37

BEFORE & AFTER
The family loves color and pattern, so the Pulp team created a magical mix
in the dining room, including a Pulp-exclusive wallpaper that’s from one
of our fabric patterns for S. Harris. We also used different textures and a
gorgeous raspberry paint color on the ceiling. It’s an adventurous look that
makes this home very unique and personalized.
after
after
We took a bolder approach with color for the
study, saturating the room in a deep, dark black.
It’s the perfect backdrop for that bold light
fixture and the art.
38
after
39

BEFORE & AFTER
In the principal bathroom, Pulp’s goal was to
add lovely design touches to elevate the space,
including a lucite stool, a lovely fixture, and
updated details.
after
We loved the architecture in the home,
especially in the principal bedroom suite.
We kept things neutral and calm, crafting
a retreat for our clients. And we included
a reading area where they can have some
quiet time on their own.
a work in
Progress
This part of Washington state is so lovely, so we
knew that the setting would inspire the interiors.
Here you can see the construction underway in the spa wing,
where the golf simulator will also be housed!
Pulp’s design duo is all about BIG ideas and guiding our clients to think out of the box when it comes
to their new homes. Here we’re giving you a sneak peek at one of our projects that’s still under
construction. We’ll bring you the final look in an upcoming issue of ICON.
For this new construction mountain
home in Cle Elum, Washington, the
Pulp team defined what our clients
wanted in this fabulous compound.
Sitting on two plots of land in a private
community, this home is going to feature a
spa wing, a golf simulator, an air hockey table,
and a shuffleboard deck. Pulp works closely
with builder and architects to ensure that our
clients are not only getting exactly what they
want, but that every square inch of the home
is living up to its potential!
JUST for YOU
Custom designs and furnishings create spaces that are personal and unique.
Here’s how the Pulp team crafts those stunning custom looks.
At Pulp, our team is known for crafting the most beautiful and functional
homes for our clients. But we also want the interiors to be special and to
stand out from the crowd of cookie cutter designs. We specialize in custom
design that will give our projects a unique and stunning style. Why custom?
Because we can create the perfect look that only our clients will have, and
custom also can offer amazing solutions to design challenges. Here are
some of the custom innovations we’ve devised for our projects!
Sometimes we can’t find that perfect design that we’re looking for in
a room, so we create it! That was the case for this custom headboard
in the primary bedroom. The mixed materials and textures adds an
unexpected look to the neutral and organic room.
Unusual materials can also craft a unique design. In the dining room above, Pulp had muscovite hand
applied to the wall behind a custom bar. It creates a lovely glow that is a singular look for our clients!
See more of this project on page 12!
44
45

CUSTOM LOOKS
Besides fully custom design, Pulp also works closely with
our suppliers to customize their existing products so
they’re a better fit for our clients’ homes. A great example
is the Fromental wallpaper on the right, that we reworked
so the snakes would perfectly curve around the sconces.
And in the living room below, a blue settee was reworked
so the scale and design details would offer our clients a
functional and beautiful seat.
For the project featured on page 12 of this issue, our clients told us they love to live and
entertain outdoors, so we knew we wanted to give them some fabulous designs that would
elevate their outdoor rooms. This Pulp-designed daybed swing is now a favorite destination
for the entire family!
46
47

CUSTOM LOOKS
Furnishings aren’t the only custom creations
that Pulp crafts for our projects! We also love
to design cabinetry that is super-chic and
functional.
For the Texas bathroom on the left, we added
reeded drawer and door fronts to give the
vanity a look that you can’t get anywhere else.
And in a formerly unused nook below, we
designed a cabinet that opens to reveal a full
bar, complete with fridge drawers and storage!
High-tech needs can also find a solution in custom
design! The Pulp team used art to hide the TV in the
project on the left, creating a unique folding door that
opens to reveal the screen.
In a music-lover’s house below, we gave them pull-out
shelves that brings the tunes even closer to the action.
float room
Bathrooms are one of Pulp’s favorite rooms to design - we love the mix of function and
beauty in these spaces. For a modern look, we’re using more floating vanities, too. Here are
a few of our best examples, and why we’re obsessed with this style!
For a lakeside Seattle home, we wanted the
primary bathroom to feel connected to the
outdoor spaces. This double floating vanity
continues that sense of air and space for a
modern oasis.
52
In smaller bathrooms like this on in
a high-rise condo, a floating vanity
opens up the room, making it seem
larger than it is.
53

FLOAT ROOMS
There’s a bit of magic to a floating vanity that fits the Pulp teams aesthetic of unexpected looks.
In the bathroom above, it’s almost a mystery as to how that gorgeous wood counter is levitating above the floor.
Opposite page:
This modern organic bathroom in a Seattle penthouse has a cloud-filled wallpaper.
So the wood counter appears to float in the clouds, showcasing that unique design that we love.
6 tips for
KITCHEN INVESTMENTS
When it comes to making investments in your home, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms
to consider. Here are Pulp’s pro tips for the 6 most important elements to invest in.
2Cabinetry
We encourage all of our
clients to spend money to get
the storage they need in the
kitchen. This room is probably
used more than any other in
the house and there is nothing
more frustrating than not
having space for items. Or not
being able to easily grab what
you need as you’re cooking.
Think very carefully about
what specialty items you
may need to store and walk
through those ideas with your
designer and contractor.
1Counters
The key to the right investments in your kitchen is to think about what you
use the most. Counters and floors get a lot of action in a kitchen, so you
need to select materials and styles that will stand up to a lot of use and
abuse. For example, if you know you’re going to set hot pans directly on the
counter, you may want to consider a quartz composite that won’t burn or
show marks from the pans.
3The Right Appliances
How do you cook? That’s a question you
should ask before you start purchasing
the appliances for your kitchen. If you
love to bake and craft gourmet meals,
then a fabulous range is going to be on
your must-have list. Or if you love wine,
you may want to invest in a full wine
fridge. Other options we talk about
with clients are large refrigerators,
fridge drawers, microwave drawers,
double dishwashers, coffee stations
and more. Select the right appliances to
fit your lifestyle!
56
57

KITCHEN INVESTMENT
4Faucet
You probably never think about how often
you will use the faucet in your kitchen sink,
but it is definitely a work horse! There are a
lot of options in faucets today that will give
you more functionality. You may want a tall
faucet for deep pots, or one with a detachable
sprayer. We really like the wave-over faucets
that don’t require you to touch a thing for the
water to start flowing. High-tech ideas are
definitely out there, so explore your options.
5Lighting
We love statement lighting in a
kitchen, like the modern fixture
below from Gabriel Scott. It’s like
adding a piece of art the room! But
you also want the light to function
well, putting the spotlight on
where you’re working or eating.
6A Pantry
We love smart storage in kitchen! Most of our projects include a pantry
the POWER of
WORDS
The Pulp team might occasionally be called wordy, but we call it art! Word art is definitely making a
statement in some of our projects, and we love what it has to say.
We believe that art should always be personal, so we
love the motivation message in our Dallas project above.
Be sure to see more of this fabulous home on page 12.
In the Palm Springs Pulp house (available on
AirBNB!), we used song lyrics to create an edgy
neon sign in the living room.
In a lakeside Seattle home, we installed a witty lit
installation that serves as a tongue-in-cheek reminder.
In a teen girl’s bedroom, the word art spells out
her family nickname. It’s both personal and fun!
ROUNDUP
The Supreme Functionality of Stools
The Pulp team loves to add as much functionality to our clients’ homes as possible. And one
of the biggest solutions with the smallest footprint is a stool! No matter which room
(or outdoor space) that we put one in, it offers a lot of look for its size.
LUXURY HOME
FRAGRANCES
AVAILABLE IN
FOUR SCENTS
One of the
smartest places
for a stool is under
a console table in a
hall or living area.
They tuck away
when they aren’t
needed, and can
quickly be pulled
out for an extra
seat or foot rest.
We love stools that
can also stand on
their own (get it?!).
These two have
such a beautiful
shape that they
can function as the
secondary seating
in this living room.
Outdoor stools
are another fave
for the Pulp team!
These chic ceramic
versions can be
tables, seats, or
foot rests, and
definitely weather
any storm.
Stools are
especially effective
in a house with
kids. That’s why
we chose these
playful blue
designs for a game
room in one of our
projects. They look
fun and they’re
comfy to sit on!
QASK
PULP
ANYTHING!
“When it comes to smart investments for
my home, what should I put at the top of
my budget for my primary bedroom?”
Linda Hylton
HOW do
YOU PULP?
We love seeing how our designer friends use our
fabrics, hardware, and other product designs in their
interior projects!
At the EDDIE ATE DYNAMITE bar
in Nashville, the lounge sofas take
a wild approach with our Leopardo
fabric for S.Harris.
NICOLE FORINA made a dreamy destination for
coffee or cocktails, complete with draperies crafted
with our Sahara Wave fabric in Cantaloupe, part of
our S.Harris collection.
GOODRICH NYC gave the
Mayfair Miami hotel a retro
modern design, including
headboards covered in our
Hyeres fabric in the Spiced color,
from our S.Harris collection.
The bedroom is definitely a room that needs to not only look beautiful, but it has got to
function perfectly, too. So we always recommend that you invest in your bed because
you’re going to spend one-third of your life sleeping in that bed. Spend plenty of time testing
mattresses to find the right one for your body and your sleeping style. Use linens that make
you the most comfortable as you sleep. And select a bed frame that gives you great support.
For example, if you like to read in bed, then an upholstered headboard will be right for you.
THE
LAST
WORD!
Hey, Beth &
Carolina:
What are your
must-haves for
a great kitchen?
DYNAMIC DUO
“I love to cook and entertain, so I have
two things in my kitchen that I couldn’t
live without. One is the large island - it
becomes my workspace and a serving
station. And I am crazy about the fridge
drawers we installed, too!” — Carolina
STORAGE SOLUTIONS
“Just like so many of our clients, I have
kids who are often in the kitchen with
us as we’re preparing meals. What
keeps everything from heading into
chaos is perfectly planned cabinetry so
everything has a place!” — Beth
