COMMUNITY NEWS
Living with NHS
front line workers
In a house of four, with my mum and
younger sister working for the NHS as
Healthcare Support Assistants, it’s safe to
say the atmosphere at home has changed.
Not only do we all worry about the risk they’re
putting themselves at on every shift, we’ve had to
make the decision to keep our distance from one
another as best we can, and on many days the
house is very quiet as they both frequently work
night shifts, most of which are consecutive too.
At 18 years old and having only started her
apprenticeship 3 months ago, my sister has
well and truly been thrown in at the deep end.
Not only is she dealing with COVID-19 patients
first hand on a daily basis, but sadly, she has also
seen several patients pass away. On top of this,
her apprenticeship has been ‘paused’ during
the pandemic, so she is working 48-hour weeks
Shayla (middle) socially distanced from mum, Suzie (left)
and younger sister Kyah (right)
(in constant contact with Coronavirus) on a mere
£6.15 an hour!
As you can probably imagine, their shifts are long,
incredibly draining and regularly understaffed.
Yet, in spite of everything they have to face they
remain positive and I couldn’t be prouder of the
work they are doing for our country, and how
fearlessly my sister has risen to the challenge.
Although living at home isn’t quite what it was,
we all look forward to the day we’re able to give
each other a big hug!
