<strong>Lichfield</strong> Waterworks’<br />

Future Bright Sparks<br />

The <strong>Lichfield</strong> Waterworks Trust is delighted to<br />

be work<strong>in</strong>g with apprentice electricians from<br />

Dudley Technical College. The jo<strong>in</strong>t venture will<br />

be an opportunity for students to work with<br />

the Trust's technical teams to learn new skills <strong>in</strong><br />

a real world sett<strong>in</strong>g, whilst help<strong>in</strong>g to renovate<br />

one of the country's most important Grade II*<br />

Listed <strong>in</strong>dustrial sites, Sandfields Pump<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Station, located <strong>in</strong> <strong>Lichfield</strong>.<br />

David Moore, Chair of the <strong>Lichfield</strong><br />

Waterworks Trust, said: “This is a fantastic<br />

opportunity for the students and a great<br />

example of how our <strong>in</strong>dustrial heritage can<br />

offer educational opportunities for young<br />

people that will br<strong>in</strong>g benefits and enjoyment to<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Firm’s<br />

Boost for Canal Trust<br />

<strong>Lichfield</strong>’s canal restoration volunteers can<br />

make progress on an important part of the<br />

project after a local company generously<br />

donated two lorry loads of build<strong>in</strong>g materials.<br />

Chasetown Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g delivered bricks<br />

and concrete blocks for the work be<strong>in</strong>g carried<br />

out by <strong>Lichfield</strong> and Hatherton Canals<br />

Restoration Trust (LHCRT) at its Fosseway<br />

Heath site.<br />

The valuable donation will allow the Trust’s<br />

volunteers and South Staffs College students,<br />

who are receiv<strong>in</strong>g on-site work experience<br />

supervised by their tutors, to extend the<br />

curved wall tak<strong>in</strong>g the canal from the Fosseway<br />

Heath bas<strong>in</strong> via a sharp turn <strong>in</strong>to the Falkland<br />

Road section, and to add to the towpath wall<br />

below Lock 18.<br />

Autism Sports and<br />

Soft Play<br />

Freedom Leisure’s Active Communities team<br />

has jo<strong>in</strong>ed forces with BLAST (Burntwood and<br />

<strong>Lichfield</strong> Autism Support Together) to offer an<br />

autism specific sports and soft play session <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>February</strong> Half term at Friary Grange Leisure<br />

Centre.<br />

Based <strong>in</strong> the sports hall, sessions are very<br />

<strong>in</strong>formal and children can free play with soft<br />

play equipment and a bouncy castle. For<br />

children want<strong>in</strong>g a bit more structure, there will<br />

be sports coaches on hand with lots of kit to<br />

play games which are tailored to children with<br />

additional needs.<br />

Parents must stay with their child, however<br />

there is plenty of seat<strong>in</strong>g around the hall. No<br />

need to book a place, just turn up before 11am<br />

and jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> on Friday 21st <strong>February</strong>. Price is £2<br />

per child.<br />

St Giles is Officially<br />

Outstand<strong>in</strong>g!<br />

Staff and volunteers at St Giles Hospice are<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g the New Year on a high after receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an ‘Outstand<strong>in</strong>g’ rat<strong>in</strong>g from the Care Quality<br />

Commission (CQC) – the <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

regulator of health and social care services <strong>in</strong><br />

England.<br />

The Whitt<strong>in</strong>gton-based hospice, which provides<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividually-tailored care both on-site and <strong>in</strong><br />

patients’ own homes, is one of just a handful of<br />

hospices to have ever been awarded the highest<br />

possible accolade.<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g more than 7,000 people a year fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the challenges associated with a potentially<br />

term<strong>in</strong>al illness, St Giles was commended by the<br />

CQC for its “compassionate” range of speciality<br />

services, as well as aim<strong>in</strong>g to “make every day<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gful for people who used the service.”<br />

The hospice was also noted for go<strong>in</strong>g “over and<br />

above what was expected of them”, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

previously hosted several wedd<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

arrang<strong>in</strong>g for a patient’s pet horse to visit, with<br />

one member of staff spend<strong>in</strong>g three days of her<br />

own time writ<strong>in</strong>g family ‘goodbye letters’ for a<br />

patient who was unable to.<br />

Festive Dash for<br />

Sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Stars<br />

<strong>Lichfield</strong>’s annual Festive Dash, held <strong>in</strong><br />

December last year, raised money for local<br />

charity Sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Stars, which provides safe social<br />

events for the adult disabled community.<br />

Organisers, KP Events and Beth Toovey of Sauce<br />

Supper Club, presented a cheque for £1,000 to<br />

Charlotte Aspley of Sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Stars, along with<br />

event sponsors A-Plan Insurance, St John’s<br />

House and Alpha Sports.<br />

Sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Stars has, once aga<strong>in</strong>, been selected as<br />

the beneficiary of the Festive Dash <strong>2020</strong>.<br />

Sponsorship<br />

<strong>Lichfield</strong> City Lions Under 11s football team has<br />

been sponsored by Vision Express who k<strong>in</strong>dly<br />

donated a total of £300 to pay for a new red<br />

away kit. The team of dedicated youngsters play<br />

every Sunday, come ra<strong>in</strong> or sh<strong>in</strong>e!<br />
