Overall, the technical universities are very active with respect to knowledge commercialization. The four technical universities in our survey, TU Dresden, TU Darmstadt, TU München, Universität Karlsruhe (TH), possess a technology transfer office, entrepreneurship and patenting counseling, as well as incubator and science park facilities. They are large universities specialized in engineering, natural sciences and / or information science, usually plus economics (industrial engineering and management) and some other social sciences and / or humanities. 4.3. Co-operation (chairs – infrastructure) and financing of “Gründungsberatung” In a further step, we identified the offices mainly responsible for entrepreneurship services (often the technology transfer office) at each HEI in our survey for further qualitative inquiries on the science-industry link. Via Email or phone, we endeavored to collect the following information: - Number of start-ups - Co-operation between infrastructure facilities and entrepreneurship chair - Financing of the entrepreneurship services After a number of inquiries, it showed that it is not possible to clearly identify the number of start-ups. Only very few offices were able to provide (more or less) reliable numbers. Many offices do not document the start-ups, and if they do so, nobody knows the “real” number of start-ups since the offices do not always get a feedback after providing services to potential entrepreneurs. So we had to exclude such data from our survey. The question on co-operation between the provider of entrepreneurship counseling (in many cases the technology transfer offices) and the entrepreneurship chair, was easier to answer (nevertheless we have missing values for 14 HEI). Two HEI indicate a lack of co-operation. In 17 HEI the entrepreneurship chair co-operates with the entrepreneurship counseling, and in 16 HEI, the entrepreneurship chair itself is the provider of entrepreneurship counseling. 14

Other means are private resources (from companies, private persons etc.) or the “Stiftungslehrstuhl”, that means the entrepreneurship chair is financed through a donation.
