In particular, the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University Potsdam (BIEM-CEIP) encompasses the chairs of Entrepreneurship and the chair for Organization and Human Resource Management (“Organisation und Personalwesen”). Besides, the BIEM- CEIP represents a subsidiary of the BIEM at the University of Potsdam. From an organizational point of view, the BIEM-CEIP may be regarded as a research institute. Funding is provided by the State of Brandenburg, by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and by third party projects. As there is no long-term financing, the research outlook of the BIEM-CEIP is naturally focused on projects, which of course is impacting in turn its staffing and organization. Another important aspect of the BIEM-CEIP is the counseling for potential entrepreneurs. While a number of students approach the institute, there is also the incidence of good business ideas generated during a seminar. After an initial discussion about the project, an individual analysis of the required funding and potential sources thereof is produced. Naturally, the counselors and the chair holder have a wide network at their disposal on which they can refer and to which potential entrepreneurs can turn with specific questions. Moreover, the BIEM is a virtual consortium of the University of Potsdam, the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences. Together these HEIs try to promote entrepreneurship in their respective higher education institutes and to leverage on synergies arising from the coordination of projects. This consortium exists since 2003 and has expanded into the BIEM e.V., which comprises all existing higher education institutes of Brandenburg. The current professor studied Business Administration and Economics at the University of Hamburg. Later in his career he worked as research project director (“wissenschaftlicher Projektleiter”) at the Fraunhofer Institute for the Systems and Innovation Research ISI, where the professor was promoted to a Member of the Board of Directors (“Mitglied des Institut- Leitungsausschuß”). Before his appointment to the University of Potsdam the chair head, was Professor for Business Administration and Management of Innovation at the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences. Accordingly, his research interests lie in the management of innovation and technology, entrepreneurship and mid-sized business development. Yet, also high-tech business ventures operated by women and how these undertakings might differ from ventures run by men are being researched under the professors’ auspices. The primary aspiration hereby is to provide some recommendations in respect of how to motivate women to start up a business in the high-tech sector. 24
Entrepreneurial Education The chair teaches a number of courses with different foci. An overview of the course offer of the University of Potsdam is provided below. Further courses introduce students to either the financing of start-ups, guerilla marketing or internationalization. Throughout the curriculum, the Entrepreneurship chair is keen to convoy notions of bonus systems, organizational culture and motivation as a way to introduce intrapreneurship in companies. There is also the possibility for students to take part in an Assessment Center to scrutinize whether or not they have an entrepreneurial mindset. Within the postgraduate program of Business Administration in biotechnology and medical technology (MBA BioMedTech), of which the professor is the managing director, the course Management of Patents is offered. Here, the key qualifications for graduates of natural sciences are taught. 25
