BC’s own summer orchestra academy, the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA), will take place this year June 13–25 in Powell River, BC. The Academy will welcome famous Canadian cellist Amanda Forsyth to its team of world-renowned guest artists who will instruct students seeking careers in symphony orchestras. A registered charity now in its fourth season, the festival attracts more than 5,000 concert-goers and this year has received a record number of 225 student applicants from around the world. The selected students will come together to form the Pacific Philharmonic, with first-rate guest faculty members from varied backgrounds and orchestras. The festival features five public concerts, including three full-orchestra symphony concerts, the Guest Artist Gala Opening and Chamber Concerts, and the Concerto Competition Semi- Finals and Finals. Beyond its concert series, PRISMA also presents an annual showcase of talent alongside local musicians, artists, and food concessions at PRISMA on the Beach, held at scenic Willingdon Beach. The festival, established in 2012, is an opportunity for enthusiastic young musicians to prepare for positions in professional orchestras. PRISMA’s vision is to be a premier North American summer music school, attracting students by merit and patrons by the quality of the program to Powell River, a city rich in cultural and musical tradition.
