Planting days planned<br />

Three community planting days<br />

are planned as Kaiapoi continues<br />

to regenerate.<br />

The WaimakaririDistrict<br />

Council is calling for volunteers to<br />

helpplant trees in the Honda<br />

Forest,established last year in the<br />

Kaiapoi east regeneration area,<br />

now known as NormanKirk Park.<br />

The first of the threeplanting<br />

days willbeheld this Saturday<br />

from 10am,with two more planned<br />

on July11and <strong>25</strong>.<br />

The forestwas established in<br />

May lastyear, withformer<br />

Waimakaririmayor David Ayers<br />

and HondaNew Zealand<br />

managing director NobuyaSonoda<br />

joining forces to unveila<br />

commemorative basalt rock.<br />

HondaNew Zealand is again<br />

planning to fly staff down from<br />

Aucklandtojoin with council staff<br />

and local community volunteers.<br />

It is hoped that the mighty<br />

kahikatea willreturntoKaiapoi,<br />

with the park comprising two<br />

hectares of treessurroundedby<br />

wetlands.<br />

Community planting dayswill<br />

continue to be held over the next<br />

few years, with the project<br />

expectedtoend in 2023.<br />

Once the forest starts to become<br />

established, it is expected that<br />

walking trackswill be added.<br />

The forest will haveanentrance<br />

on Charles St.<br />

Volunteers are encouraged to<br />

bringsturdyfootwear, aspade,<br />

gloves and adrink bottle.<br />
