notepad
the power of us
I remember this one time when a visitor to my office,
finding that I was the only one in there, exclaimed, “Oh,
I was expecting to see a team of people here working for
ZOOM.” I smiled and said, “It’s only me. I’m the only
one behind the magazine. There is no group of people
running around, no big company backing me up, no
team of salespeople, no copywriters. It’s just me. I am
ZOOM.”
I used to think that way. However, I soon realized that I
am not really the only one behind ZOOM.
Let’s consider this issue, for example. Work on it started
not with the first click of my mouse to open a brandnew
file. It began way before that. It started when our
photographers first pressed the shoot buttons on their
cameras to capture the images we showcase in these
pages. It includes the many hours they spent trying
to get that perfect light of day, catch a bird in flight, or
capture a fleeting moment when clouds form a dramatic
canvas above a shimmering waterscape.
This issue started with a painter’s first brush stroke on a
blank canvas. It started when music festival organizers
brainstormed for their new concert season and when
other groups initiated plans for their annual events.
Then it continued when some people slipped copies
of ZOOM into travel bags to take with them to their
destinations, to capture photographic mementos of
their trips. Pet lovers joined in, too. They took photos of
their adorable pets and sent them to us. Finally, local
businesses who realized the value of ZOOM as a potent
vehicle for their advertising message stepped forward
and made it possible for this issue to go into print.
6
summer 2013
10 14
A series of beginnings, various acts of creation, both
small and big steps from many individuals, community
groups, and businesses, make up this issue of ZOOM.
The power of community is definitely strong and alive
on the Coast, and ZOOM is but one solid manifestation.
When I now get asked who is behind ZOOM, I say that
it is the community that produces it. I just happen to be
the one who weaves the many threads into the finished
pages.
34
28
I used to feel so all alone when, in the wee hours of the
morning, struggling to meet the printing deadline, I was
still working on refining page layouts. I don’t feel that
way anymore. I am not ZOOM—we all are.
I love to photograph things that the
average person wouldn’t stop to look at.
There is so much beauty that gets passed
by, when really people just need to slow
down and look around in order to see it.
The abundance of nature, its beauty, and
the ocean at my doorstep inspire me on
a daily basis. I want you to see, smell, and
feel my images, as I did at that split second
in time. I want them to speak to you, as
they speak to me. — Linda Sabiston
“The inaugural exhibition in 2012 was a huge
success; it achieved a level of excellence both in
the quality of the work and in organization. The
combination of the art exhibition, the Festival
of the Written Arts, and the Hackett Park Arts
and Crafts Fair is an extraordinary convergence
of creative activity in the heart of Sechelt. The
Power of Paint exhibition makes a significant
contribution to a cultural hub that puts Sechelt on
the map, attracts visitors, and enriches the lives
of our residents.” — Jane Davidson, Producer,
“The idea behind this project is to see
how we, as individual artists with our
contrasting styles, can create something
that is much more than the sum of
the individual parts. Coming together
to make a piece of art in this way
invigorates a whole new level of energy,
a new way of seeing and expressing a
synchronicity
festival
Far from being just another festival, Synchronicity is
a bold experiment in community building that gives
us all a glimpse into our future today.
Synchronicity is that moment in time when everything
just feels connected. And while this feeling can be
difficult to capture, the Synchronicity Festival is doing
just that. We take the Sunshine Coast’s stunning
rainforests and mountains, combine them with our
world-class artists and acrobats, add some of our
cutting-edge social entrepreneurs and innovators,
toss in a few of our five-star chefs and artisans—and
those connections simply start to happen.
Taking place the weekend of August 23–25, the
fourth annual Synchronicity Festival will feature
the always popular Rainforest Circus (the 2013
“take a chance” version), more jaw-dropping art
installations, world-class roaming musicians,
delectable local food, a marketplace of social and
creative entrepreneurs, and a host of new and
exciting first-time collaborations, including: an art
farm–inspired “Causeway of Chance,” a humanscale
board game by Roberts Creek’s very own The
Only Animal Theatre Company, and a Saturday Night
Carnivale featuring shadow puppetry by Mind of a
Snail Puppet Co. and funk music by Brown Paper Bag
that’ll get you dancing under the stars.
Adults, bring the kids! Kids, bring the adults! Soak in
the sights and sounds of Synchronicity this summer,
a unique Sunshine Coast event for all ages!
Townsite Brewing
beer , art & community
Photography Jennifer Dodd & Dustan Sept | Words Nola Poirier & Karen Skadsheim
The Bavarian purity law of 1516 dictates that
beer must be made with only four ingredients:
water, barley, hops, and yeast. But for the
folks at Townsite Brewing, the recipe isn’t
complete without one more essential ingredient:
community.
Community and local resilience is not a new idea
in Powell River. In fact, the town itself was founded
on principles of the Arts & Crafts movement, a
philosophy that correlates good design with
good society and emphasizes craftsmanship.
And the brewery’s artisan tradition doesn’t end
with the beer; in fact, that’s just the beginning.
Local artist Meghan Hildebrand is the main
creative mind behind their artwork, creating the
logo as well as label art that evokes the area’s
culture and history. Community is also very
important to Hildebrand, and she loves the fact
that Townsite has woven it into their core values.
“This is the best design job—I get to create the
visual identity for a company that is truly local
and committed to our community, for a product
I love that makes people happy and proud to
be here,” she said. “These are exciting times for
Townsite and Powell River!”
The brewery’s commitment to social responsibility
also includes fundraising. Townsite donates one
dollar from every filled growler to Powell River
non-profits. The success of this program—to
date it has raised more than $8,000—inspired
the Townsite team to develop a similar program
for the Sechelt Peninsula.
“We are very proud of the growler program,” said
Director of Sales, Michelle Zutz, “and have long
discussed how to expand it along the Coast.
The key for us is keeping it uniquely local, but
growlers really don’t travel past the Saltery Bay
ferry. However, our Suncoast Pale Ale is draughtonly
and available only on the Sunshine Coast,
so we decided to use that.”
This new program, dubbed “Toast the Coast,”
pledges ten cents to Sunshine Coast non-profits
from every pint of Suncoast sold from Langdale
to Earl’s Cove and runs from Victoria Day to
Labour Day.
So don’t just break bread together, toast the
Coast. Is there a more satisfying way to build
community?
Taps involved in the program are at the Backeddy,
Lighthouse Pub, Ruby Lake Resort, the Gumboot,
and Sita’s Spag Shack. The first recipient of the
program is FUSE and the Hop Yard Collective.
pender harbour reading centre
Although it was originally started in 1968, the Pender Harbour Reading
Centre is still a well-kept secret to some. Located beside the School
of Music and the Harbour Gallery in Madeira Park, the Reading Centre
provides a recreational reading opportunity for residents of Pender
Harbour, Egmont, and Secret Cove. It is operated by the non-profit
Pender Harbour Reading Society, and all work is done by volunteers, who
purchase and catalogue the books and provide service to the public
several days a week. The volunteers also conduct regular story times
for the Serendipity Preschool, in an effort to develop an appreciation for
books among our very young readers. Recently, the Centre introduced
book time
Library, and download e-books and audio books. The Reading Centre’s
collection contains fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and a complete set
of Harbour Publishing’s books. The Board purchases books throughout the
year, based on the interests of the majority of the members, and tries to fulfill
special requests when possible. An interlibrary loan service is also available.
The Centre accepts book donations, which are added to the collection, where
appropriate and possible, or sold in book sales. Current funding is through
small grants and cash donations, which are always welcome. Check out the
Centre’s website at www.penderharbourlibrary.ca for hours and membership
information and to preview recent additions to the collection. Better yet, visit
photo booth at Nicospacraft, one of the festival
venues: I asked festival-goers to smile for the
camera and be part of this special photo spread. It
was a simple, no-fuss photo setup, using available
natural light, with camera in automatic mode. No
mirror to check hair and makeup or to practise a
smile. Not expecting good technical results, but
wishing simply to capture people’s natural smiles. It
was a fun experience meeting new people and taking
their photos. It was fun to again relive the experience
while putting together the layouts. I was smiling,
too, throughout the entire task. Who wouldn’t when
everyone is smiling back at you? — Edmund Arceo
GREAT BLUE HERON, THE BLUE ANGEL 2012

feathers
the passion of krisztina harasztosi
As a child I was fond of two things: animals and painting. While
neither of these interests led to a full-time career, they led me
to a keen interest in photography. My husband and I moved
from Hungary to Canada in 2007 to start a new life, and we
eventually found ourselves on the Sunshine Coast last year.
I felt that I had found home. I am amazed at the beauty that
surrounds me . . . the mountains, the water, and the diversity of
wildlife. I love taking walks and find smiling people everywhere.
This is where my love for photography grew even more. I read
all the books I found and tried all the techniques that appeared
interesting. I have just not been able to stop exploring the
possibilities that lie hidden in a camera.
My work mostly includes wildlife photography. Birds have
been a favourite subject. I also do landscapes with HDR (High
Dynamic Range) techniques, time-lapsed star photography
(night photography without flash), portraits, macro-photos,
and slow-shutter art photography.
My bird photographs are taken from a very close distance; I
shoot with a relatively short lens (300 mm). I do not plan to
change this, because taking photographs is more than art
for me. I consider it an adventure to find and approach my
“models,” getting as close to them as possible. I am especially
fond of action shots. I learned the technique to take pictures
and change spots quickly to preserve the fleeting moments
that escape human eyes. I am looking forward to being able to
exhibit my photographs in venues around the Coast.
I know I will never grow up. I will always be the little girl who
looks at the world with wide-eyed amusement, whether looking
at a tiny bug or an approaching big bear. — Krisztina Harasztosi
discovery
earthly journeys
Catch Our Drift Earthly Journeys is a new experiential
tourism company on the Sunshine Coast. An
experiential tour, simply put, provides the opportunity
to learn something by doing something with someone
who lives here. A more in-depth view showcases this
as responsible tourism. Catch Our Drift achieves
responsibility on three levels. For the traveller, it is
an opportunity to immerse oneself quickly in local
culture in a hands-on and interactive way, which is both
meaningful and enjoyable to the person experiencing
it. For the community, there is the economic benefit of
dollars being spent locally, but the real value is found
in empowering community members to share their
passions. It builds local pride and confidence and is also
culturally sensitive, fostering respect between tourists
and hosts. Understanding comes from knowing. For
the environment, the journey guides have inspirational
messages about life on Earth.
One of the core elements of a Catch Our Drift journey
is consciousness. This can be shared by guides in a
variety of ways: recycling plastic taster spoons at the
gelato shop, providing tips for building a “green” home
or raising organic chickens, or working with a fine artist
to really see a subject you’re working on; from learning
how to find food in the forest to remembering your
experience through sketches in your travel journal and
through shared stories and conversations. Sunshine
Coasters have so much wisdom to share, and this is a
wonderful opportunity to tap into it. It can be deep or it
can be subtle, and if you’re open to it, it will definitely
be fun!
Catch Our Drift Earthly Journeys provides unique local
experiences to visitors on the Sunshine Coast of British
Columbia. Journeys average two to three hours each
and allow for quick immersion into the local culture. For
more information, please visit www.catchourdrift.ca or
