English today. We have also left the German ‘hoffentlich’ untranslated, since it is
grammatically correct in the letters, whereas to translate it as ‘hopefully’ would
not only change the meaning slightly, but be grammatically incorrect in English.
We use the spelling Schönberg because this is the way the man spelled his
name in the years with which this book is concerned, 1906–21. He changed the
spelling to Schoenberg only when he moved to the United States in 1933.
