Dan the man once again for Southbridge
• From page 1
Carter filled his usual No
10 position as the club which
nurtured him swept away West
Melton 54-14 in the top of the
table Coleman Shield clash.
Though declaring himself a
bit rusty, he was sharper than he
thought, the 38-year-old having
a hand in two tries and playing
the full 80min. He also kicked six
conversions.
But any thoughts West Melton
might be a little gun shy of the
112-test All Black were put to rest
when hooker Jack Walsh nailed
him with a good old fashioned
body-and-all cruncher.
Carter got himself up off the
ground and rejoined the fray.
Water of a duck’s back. Just good
hard, country rugby.
“If anyone saw that game today,
I’d say myself that I’m a bit rusty,”
he told reporters after the match.
“It’s good to make the first step
in to potentially playing again.
I’m not sure if I could play at Super
Rugby level just yet. You leave
those kinds of decisions up to the
coaches.”
Carter will join the Blues later
in the week for the Super Rugby
Aotearoa top of the table clash
with the Blues at Orangetheory
Stadium on Saturday.
“Whether I play or not, I’m
not too worried. I’ll leave that
decision to (coach) Leon (Mac-
Donald) and the selectors up at
the Blues.”
A three-times World Player of
the Year and World Cup winner
in 2011 and 2015, Carter spent his
entire professional career in New
Zealand playing for the Crusaders.
He joined the Blues after stints
in France and Japan, but has not
played since February after Japan’s
Top League was shut down
due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Saturday was also notable for
other milestones.
Carter was made an honorary
life member at his last appearance
for Southbridge in 2014,
and after Saturday’s match he
was presented with his blazer by
his father Neville Carter. He also
turned out for the first time since
a schoolboy with his cousin Will
Carter.
And on another high note,
former Tongan international
Isileli Fine, played his 100th game
for Southbridge. The big lock was
in his usual commanding form.
