Heart of Rolleston takes shape
Rolleston’s new library
and community centre,
Te Ara Atea, is expected
to be the heart of the
township’s new centre.

A RANGE OF spaces and
activities will be accommodated
for in the building on Tennyson
St which will include a modern
library, meeting rooms,
performance spaces, workshops
and digital resources.
It will also have social spaces,
a community lounge area, as
well as arts, culture and heritage
displays and research facilities.
One of the key features in the
facility will be the museum-like
experience which will be used
throughout the facility to share
the story of the district and its
people, place and culture.
This will be done through engaging
objects and multi-media
interpretive displays.
Said a district council spokesman:
“The building will provide
a much-needed space for this
community to come together,
to learn, access knowledge, art
and cultural heritage resources,
build literacy, share stories and
develop their identity and sense
of connection, local pride.
“The facility will include
contemporary resources in a
modern environment that will
extend the programming and
activation provision for the
Rolleston Town Centre.”
The name of the community
centre and library, Te Ara Atea,
was gifted by Te Taumutu
Rūnanga and references an unobstructed
pathway to the world
of knowledge.
The facility will open onto
a spacious town square which
will provide areas for civic and
community gatherings, markets,
events, performances and informal
community interaction.

so that people can move freely
between the indoor environment
of Te Ara Ātea and the
outdoor spaces that encourage
community gathering, activities,
recreation and reflection.”
Armitage Williams is the
chosen contractor for the facility
which is expected to cost $420.7
million.
Construction on the facility
began in December last year and
is expected to be complete in
August next year.
The former Rolleston library
and community centre will be
repurposed into a centre for the
arts.
The idea was mooted at a district
council meeting in March.
It would encompass purposebuilt
spaces for the arts and
spaces which are fully designed
to meet the needs of arts activities.
Consultation on the future
use, capital investment requirements
and operating cost
implications of the Rolleston
Community Centre building
will be held in the 2021-31 Long
Term Plan process.

Police
meet with
builders

POLICE BELIEVE the message
has sunk in for construction
companies wanting to avoid
burglaries at their building sites.
A police meeting held on June
30, was attended by about 30
representatives of local building
companies.
Senior Sergeant Dean Harker
said: “We have gotten some feedback
that the companies have been
speaking with their tradesman and
letting them know all of the safety
measures they can use. I think the
message has sunk in for them.”
He said the main message from
police is they want the building
companies to report any theft
and to be more preventative
themselves to cut down
opportunities for burglars.
“Things like ensuring properties
are secure, builders gear and
appliances are kept out of sight
and identifiable where possible in
case they are stolen.”
Burglaries at building sites have
increased since the lifting of the
lockdown.

Applications are open for the Selwyn
Youth Project Fund for any individual
