The Star Thursday July 16 2020 14 NEWS Diamond Harbour parking problems PARKING PROBLEMS near Diamond Harbour wharf have sparked a proposal for restrictions in two areas. There are currently no restrictions at the car parks beside the Banks Peninsula wharf or at the Stoddart Point main parking area. It has attracted freedom campers, and others using the spaces all day, which creates problems for people needing to park their cars and commute across Lyttelton Harbour on the Black Cat Cruises’ ferry. Black Cat Cruises chief executive Paul Milligan said parking has been an issue for “quite some time.” “It is an area that needs to be managed and controlled to make it fair for everyone. “Obviously, for our customers, we’d like to see as much parking available as possible.” The city council is asking for feedback on a proposal to change the area beside the wharf to include six parking spaces with 180min restrictions. It could also keep eight unrestricted parking spaces and retain two mobility spaces. • By Louis Day A DECISION on the name of a cemetery, home to unidentified victims of the February 22, 2011, earthquake will be made next week. The Avonhead Park Cemetery which first opened in 1983, was approved as the interment site for the remains of unidentified victims from the earthquake. The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery has previously called on the name of the cemetery to be changed to Avonhead Memorial Cemetery in recognition of its wider significance as the home of the unidentified victims from the quake. City council staff have recommended the Fendalton- Waimairi-Harewood Community Board, which has been delegated authority to make a decision on the matter, to not change the name at its meeting on Monday. Public consultation on potentially changing the name did not find a conclusive preference from the public. Out of 114 submissions, 51 wanted to change the name, 52 did not want to change the name, 10 suggested a combined name and one submitter stated they were happy either way. Thirty-seven earthquake victims and families of victims have used the site as a place of burial, which represents a small number of the 5000 plots the cemetery is home to. City council staff say the potential distress or offence that could result from a change of name could potentially outweigh the positive feelings of those in favour of a name change. “Consultation feedback indicates that many families and individuals have chosen to be interred in a park-like cemetery, especially within the lawn area and that for many the removal of the word park would be distressing,” city council staff said.
