Students Conference<br />

Boeing 777 pilot, Senior First Offi cer Sharifah Czarena Surainy Syed Hj<br />

Hashim, was invited to be a panelist speaker at the International School<br />

Brunei’s Borneo Global Issues Conference held early March.<br />

The conference was offi cially opened by Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri<br />

Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab<br />

Rahaman. Over 300 students from schools in Brunei, Japan, Malaysia,<br />

Indonesia and Thailand participated in the four-day event, which this year<br />

carried the theme ‘Women in the 21st Century’.<br />

Following the conference, Senior First Offi cer Czarena said, “Having the<br />

opportunity to interact with the students during the conference was an<br />

absolute pleasure. To have once upon a time been a student in ISB and to<br />

now come back as a recognised ‘someone’ was a sheer delight.<br />

“One of my messages to them was to not be afraid to dream because with<br />

hard work and determination, that dream one day, may just come true.”<br />

Throughout the conference, participating students debated various topics<br />

in a simulation of a UN proceeding in four main debating motions: Socio-<br />

Economic Affairs, Human Rights, Politics and the Environment.<br />

Visit by<br />

HRH Prince Hj Abd ’Azim<br />

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul ’Azim paid a<br />

visit to Brunei International Airport, RBA’s Engineering<br />

Department and RBA Training Centre on 21 March.<br />

Airline Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion and<br />

members of Senior Management greeted His Royal<br />

Highness upon arrival at the Engineering Department.<br />

During the visit, the Prince inspected an Airbus 319 that<br />

was undergoing a maintenance check and toured some<br />

of the engineering workshops. At the RBA Training<br />

Centre, His Royal Highness was briefed about the<br />

Safety & Emergency Procedures section and the Flight<br />

Simulator facilities.<br />

Accompanying His Royal Highness throughout the<br />

visit was Brunei’s Minister of Communications,<br />

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan<br />

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan<br />

Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, and executives from<br />

the Ministry.<br />

Flights to Melbourne Inaugurated<br />

On 29 March, Royal Brunei Airlines inaugurated its four-times weekly services<br />

to Melbourne, Australia. The fl ights to Melbourne operate on Tuesday,<br />

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, utilising RBA’s Boeing 777 aircraft.<br />

Airline Deputy Chairman, Dermot Mannion said, “The launching of Royal<br />

Brunei Airlines’ direct fl ight to Melbourne will strengthen the relationship<br />

between Australia and Brunei Darussalam – not just within tourism and trade<br />

but also in hopefully, the education sector.”<br />

Congratulating the airline on this occasion, His Excellency Mark Sawers,<br />

Australian High Commissioner to Brunei, commented. “This new service is<br />

certainly welcome news to travellers both as a direct stop or a transit option.”<br />
