The Nicholas Hammond AcademyKeeping Busy During ‘Lockdown’Whilst on ‘lockdown’ with the rest ofthe country we have of course beenopen to children of key workers andvulnerable students. More recentlywe have welcomed back our Year 10s, albeit to anacademy with a very ‘different look’ taking intoaccount government guidelines. We have beenastounded at some of the amazing things ourstudents have been involved with whilst at homealongside their studies, taking part in our charityproject, hobbies and other interesting activities.Here are just a few of the projects on which we areproud to report:-Firstly, we were delighted at the response to our‘Hope, Happiness & Thanks’ project involvingstudents in Years 7 & 8. Students concernedabout the wellbeing of those vulnerable membersof our community having to shield, teamed upwith Swaffham Town Council & The SwaffhamEmergency Action Group. They worked on postersand took photographs of what made them feelhappy, to share with those whose spirits neededa ‘lift’ and to let them know they have not beenforgotten - bringing a little hope and happiness!As a demonstration of ‘thanks’ to our key workers,students added their own posters to the ‘Thank You’wall outside the White Hart Pub which acted as thehub of the town’s efforts. You will have also haveseen our own tribute being a ‘window of thanks’ asyou have passed our academy.we are sure must have been very pleased to shedthat heavy coat in the recent hot weather!We know that our students take great pride intheir work and this has not changed just becausethey have not been able to attend school. Staffand students have kept in touch regularly viaphone calls and on-line. Some of the art work hasbeen truly excellent with one student even settingup her own small business taking commissions.It has become clear that our students also havefound other talents during their time at home (forexample we have some fine carpenters and cooks).One of our students did not simply defer to ‘Amazonshopping’ for a present for his grandmother’sbirthday, he set to work making her a bird table withhis own fair hands. Another adventurous younglady spent the afternoon shearing an alpaca, whoOthers have been proud to share the results ofscience experiments, with adult supervision whereindicated, in their own homes.On the subject of pride - we are delighted to sharein the success of Jack, part of a group of volunteersfrom the Norfolk Charity, Nelson’s Journey, whohave been given The Queen’s Award for VoluntaryService, being the highest award a voluntary groupcan receive in the UK. The charity supports childrenaged from 11 to 17 years who have experiencedthe death of a significant loved one. TNHA are veryproud of his amazing achievement!Finally, we say a fond farewell to our ‘leavers’ inYear 11 & 13, who will move on to the next stageof their lives with our best wishes for their future.We also take the opportunity to wish all students,parents/carers, supporters of the academy andthose children who will join TNHA in September - asummer filled with fun.Stay safe and well!3
