Thieves target
farm gates and fencing

FARM GATES and fencing
have become the latest target for
thieves across the district.

She said: “The detailed design
went through a safety audit process,
undertaken by a team of independent
road safety experts, at the
gates stolen on Saturday night.
“It just p***** me off that
somebody has come onto my
property and taken my stuff.
We didn’t think they would be
targeted,” he said.
Ferguson said, fortunately,
none of his stock got out of their
detailed design stage of the project
and was considered to be safe.
“A further ‘safety audit’ will
be undertaken on completion
of construction to ensure an acceptable
road safety standard has
been achieved.”
Emery said they have
been asked by a resident to
paddocks but the gates will cost
about $150 each to replace.
Harker said it is rural areas in
Darfield, Sheffield and Springfield
that are being targeted the
most.
“We are unsure exactly why
they are being taken, the scrap
modify signage and road markings
so motorists can identify
the road.
“We are nearing completion
of a proposal for this. Once this
process is completed we intend
to implement these signage and
road marking changes.”
They expect the changes to be
metal value would be very limited.
“Possibly somebody might be
starting up a farm and is using
the gates.”
Police are not sure if the gates
and fencing are being taken out
of the district.
“The gates can be quite big
so the offenders are going to
need some sort of ute or quite
a big trailer to transport
them.
“It is quite alarming. If the
gates are stolen, stock can get out
on the road or if people have got
cattle then bulls could get in with
the cows or anything like that.”

VEGETATION FIRE
Fire crews were called to a
vegetation fire in the middle
of a paddock in Rolleston last
Wednesday morning. Firefighters
attended the incident on
Robinsons Rd at about 1.30am.
A Fire and Emergency NZ
spokeswoman said they had
received reports of bushes on fire.
“When we arrived we found an
unattended vegetation fire and we
extinguished it with no issues. It
was in the middle of a paddock
but it was unattended so we put
it out.” The spokeswoman said
the fire is not being treated as
suspicious.
LINCOLN MANSE INTEREST
Four parties are showing interest
in purchasing and relocating
the Lincoln Union Church’s
old manse building. Church
member Alex Dunlop said it is
still early in the process. The old
manse building, built in 1889,
is being offered for $1 as long
as it is moved from its current
site on James St. The building
is being sold as the church can
no longer afford to maintain it.
