This licensed program provides varied recreational activities. The Before Care offers
low-key programming while the After Care incorporates a structured energetic
format. Activities include crafts, games, sports and special events. To combat
childhood obesity, we have implemented heart-healthy activities. Our curriculum
focuses on healthy eating habits and active play to encourage and educate children
to make positive life choices. All programs are licensed through the Maryland

Middle School
After Care

The Student Union: Middle School After
School Program
Grades 6-8 / M-F, duration of school year / $315 month
This licensed program provides a safe, supervised environment for middle school
students from the end of the school day to 6 PM. Activities include arts, community
outings, crafts, games, homework time, sports and individualized programs.
Special events and outings may require additional fees. To ensure the safety of
all participants, all staff are required to attend outings. If parents choose for their
children not to participate in these outings, parents must make arrangements

TREC After Care
Therapeutic Recreation Extended Care
(TREC)
6-21 yrs / M-F, duration of school year 2011-2012 / $345 month
This licensed program provides a safe and nurturing environment for children,
teens and young adults with developmental disabilities. Leisure activities,
community outings and special events are provided in this after-school program.
Special events and outings may require additional activity fees. Program is not held
when schools are closed. Staff to participant ratio is 1:3 for school and 1:5 for parks.

Inclusion Services
• The Howard County Department of Recreation
and Parks offers programming for individuals with
disabilities in a variety of categories. The Department
encourages individuals with disabilities to register for
general recreation programs. The Department will
make reasonable accommodations to facilitate the
participation of an individual with a disability in any
of our programs. The Therapeutic Recreation (TR)
section follows a procedure for providing these
accommodations. It uses the Community Recreation
Assessment and Accommodation Plan to provide
Recreation and Parks staff with an understanding
of the accommodation being made as well as
disability awareness information.
• The request for accommodations takes place at the
time of registration. If registering by phone or in person,
you will be asked if you or your family member require
special accommodations. This is a "yes" or "no" response.
If you choose to provide additional information, the
staff member will note this in the online notes that are
visible to staff.
• During the online registration you will come to an area
that offers the following custom question: “Does the
participant have an allergy, disability or any special
accommodation request that we need to know about?”
If you are requesting an accommodation, the answer
should be “yes” and if not, “no.” You will also be given
an optional space to expand on your request in the
notes section. This is viewed only by staff.
