For the last 15 years, consumers have had access to cars outfitted with driver aids and safety features, such as navigation systems, blind spot detection and forward collision warning. These precursors to AVs offer a whole spectrum of connectivity, giving drivers a degree of control, but with better access to information such as real-time traffic updates. The next step is for the vehicle to take action, say, in avoiding a collision, or to travel at the appropriate speed and take the best route to maximize fuel efficiency. Cars that are connected to one another can warn following vehicles of up-coming road conditions, such as snow covered pavement or ice patches, for enhanced safety. “Everyone is fascinated with the technology and, while we’re still in a walk-before-you-can-run phase, the pace is speeding up,” says Stephen Erwin, Head, Intelligent Transportation Systems Program, Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO). “The vehicle is an extension of the information world with internet access to support the driver. Connected vehicles are here now and we’re starting to see subcomponents of automation. Autonomous vehicles will take the driver out of the equation with automated steering and braking systems. Ideally, we will have vehicles that are both connected and automated.” Proponents of driverless cars point out the enormous benefits of transitioning to AVs, including improved safety. Accidents caused by drinking and driving, distracted driving and aggressive driving are the direct result of human error, which will no longer be an issue in an AV dominated society. The self-driving car is aware of itself in relation to its surroundings, including its proximity to other vehicles and pedestrians, continuously sending and receiving information to avoid a collision at all costs. According to the US Department of Transportation, selfdriving cars would lower car crashes in the U.S. by 80 per cent, which would account for a significant reduction in fatalities and injuries. Safer roads will reduce the number of accident-related hospital emergencies and costs to the medical system, as well as the number of first responder emergency calls. The improved fuel efficiency and reduced vehicle emissions of AVs will enhance sustainability. With cars travelling at the same speed, in unison, there is no rubber-necking, tailgating and frequent acceleration and deceleration, which affects fuel efficiency. Vehicles will be able to synchronize their speeds to ensure that they hit only green lights along a route, and the car will take the least congested, most direct roadway to avoid any stop and go scenarios. ›› The technological nerve centre of the connected vehicle where systems communicate with each other to feed the vehicle’s on-screen displays, dash board and system technologies. 18 OHMPA | ASPHALTOPICS
