SET LEADS ASIA IN SUSTAINABILITY
DISCLOSURE RANKINGS
According to Corporate
Knights’ and AVIVA’s
‘Measuring Sustainability
Disclosure’ 2019 report,
the Stock Exchange of
Thailand (SET) was the
leader in Asia and indeed
was the only Asian nation
that made it into the top
10 list worldwide.
Thailand was ranked
9th in the world and this
marks the third consecutive
year that the Kingdom
has been ranked in
the top 10.
apportioned this data to
the relevant bourses.
The sustainability aspects
measured included
energy use, greenhouse
gas emissions, water use,
waste disposal methods
sustainable business operations
and this has been
instrumental in increasing
awareness of Thailand in
this field on the international
stage. At the same
time there has been trans-
market participants. With
listed companies topping
the board in Asia, it reflects
that listed firms are
committed to growing their
businesses by embracing
sustainability practices
and impact in their operations.
In addition, SET
has consistently promoted
listed companies’ sustainability
best practice to
level up the quality of the
Thai capital market, in line
with SET’s key strategy
to grow with stakeholders
and sustainable society.
Significantly, this recognition
will make the Thai
capital market more appealing
to local and international
investors.”
In first position was the
Nasdaq Helsinki, closely
followed by the BME
Spanish Stock Exchanges.
Clinching third place
was Euronext Lisbon and
rounding off the other two
positions in the top five
was Euronext Paris and
the Johannesburg Stock
Exchange.
Taking their places in
positions 6 through to 10
were Borsa Italiana, Euronext
Amsterdam, Bolsa
De Valores De Colombia,
The Stock Exchange of
Thailand and the Nasdaq
Stockholm tied with the
Nasdaq Copenhagen in
that order.
The report measured
several sustainability aspects
of large listed companies
with a market cap
of over US$1 billion, and
and recycling, employee
turnover and occupational
injury rates. More than
6,200 companies within
49 internationally recognized
bourses across the
world took part in the survey.
The SET’s high ranking
means that Thailand’s
listed companies’ have a
strong commitment to ensure
parent disclosure of
all sustainability practices
by Thai companies that
has further provided support
for investors.
SET President, Pakorn
Peetathawatchai, was
quoted as saying, “The

The rankings come at a
time when there has been
a shift of late on the part
of investors worldwide to
look for companies that
demonstrate that they are
embracing sustainability
and ethical business practices.
Bourses have a responsibility

publicly listed companies,
that have their shares

THAI CITIES BECOMING MORE
EXPENSIVE FOR EXPATS
BUSINESS SUPPLEMENT
In the latest ECA International
survey that analyses
the cost of living in various
cities worldwide for expatriates,
Bangkok came in at
28th place in Asia, and 60th
position globally.
Thailand’s capital city has
had quite a run in the rankings
in previous years. Prior
to 2017 it ranked 170th in the
world then jumped a whopping
80 places to move into
the top 100, at 90thposition
in 2018. A year later, Bangkok
jumped another 43 places
to find itself in the top 50
most expensive places in the
world.
Accounting for the various
movements, Regional Director
for Asia at ECA International,
Lee Quane, was quoted
as saying, "Bangkok, long
seen as a cheap destination
for holidaymakers and expatriates
alike, has seen a huge
jump in its rankings, moving
the most out of all Asian cities
surveyed. This is largely
the result of the strong baht."
Chiang Mai also joined
the Thai capital to feature in
the top 30 most expensive
places in Asia for expats,
coming in just behind Bangkok
in 29th position. However
the northern city came
in at a more modest 142nd
place in the global rankings.
Mr. Quane was also quoted
as saying, “The baht has
strengthened considerably
making the country more
expensive for expatriates
and tourists,” adding, “However,
this trend has slowed
over the past year, partly in
response to government attempts
to weaken the baht
in order to keep the country
competitive.”
The ECA rankings measure
the cost of a basket
of different goods and services,
but exclude the cost of
school fees, rentals, and car
ownership, since these are
often paid for by employers.
Since many expats shop for
imported goods these feature
in the calculations.
According to the report,
in Asia, the most expensive
city to live in was Ashgabat,
Turkmenistan due to very
high inflation of imported
products. In second place
was Hong Kong, outpacing
both Singapore and Tokyo.
Hong Kong was also 6th
place in the rankings globally,
whilst Singapore was in
14thposition.
Mainland Chinese cities
dropped slightly in the rankings
due to poor performance
of the Chinese currency and
low inflation compared to
some other places in Asia.
Middle Eastern cities on
the other hand have climbed
in the rankings due to currency
appreciation and rising
prices. Tel Aviv was in
the top ten most expensive
cities worldwide for the first
time.
The ECA International
survey has been carried out
twice a year, every March
and September, since 2005.
It will be interesting to see
what effect the coronavirus
will have on the rankings in
future reports.

SALES OF MERCEDES-BENZ G
CLASS MODELS SURGE
IN THAILAND
Despite the coronavirus, Mercedes Benz
(Thailand) reported that sales of its G class
off-road vehicles jumped by more than 225%
for the first 6 months of 2020, based on a year
on year comparison.
Sales of the AMG sports car also rose, but
by a more modest 1.6 per cent. These rises
came at a time when the car industry as a
whole was bracing for a downturn.
Roland Folger, president and chief executive
of Mercedes-Benz (Thailand), was quoted
as saying that G Class sales in June, ”have
surprisingly risen more than what we expected”,
adding, “These results showed a positive
trend for the Thai car market in the third quarter.”
The success
was due to carefully
engineered
online marketing
that enabled
users to become familiar with the features
of the models without leaving their home.
Mr. Folger was also quoted as saying, “As
consumers continued to be able to access and
get close to the Mercedes-Benz brand over the
past months when we were facing the Covid-19
crisis, it was reflected in positive sales results
during the first half of 2020.”
THAILAND’S PTT BEHIND ASIA’S
LONGEST DATED BOND ISSUE
Energy Company, PTT, has raised US$700
million by way of a 50-year bonds issuance.
These are the longest dated bonds ever issued
in Asia. The yield offered was 3.7 per
cent.
Just how investors can tell the future direction
of interest rates over the next 10 or 20
years is hard to imagine, but a whopping 50
years would require some certain conviction
from investors. Yet interestingly, demand for
longer dated bonds is increasing due to requirements
for pension funds to plan for the
future.
A debt capital markets banker who worked
on the PTT deal was quoted as saying, "For
high quality names moving towards longer
date deals is not that difficult, we have seen
some 40-year transactions already," adding,
"We are not jumping from 10-year deals to
50-year deals, we are moving there gradually
and investors are becoming more receptive to
longer dated issuances.”
THAI VIETJET SEES PROMISE IN
THE DOMESTIC TRAVEL MARKET
Thai Vietjet, an airline in the Kingdom operating
a number of domestic routes, has seen
an increase in bookings of around 10% in July
versus the month before.
The company hopes to boost domestic
travel demand by increasing the number of domestic
routes it flies. Five new routes are to be
added to its network.
These will be Bangkok to Khon Kaen,
Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat, Bangkok to
Surat Thani, Bangkok to Hat Yai, and Bangkok
to Ubon Ratchathani.
Currently the airline is only flying 7 out of its
11 strong fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft
and so has the capacity to grow its route-map.
Thai Vietjet’s chairwoman, Nguyen Thi
Thuy Binh, was quoted as saying, “A growth
trend is possible in July, thanks to government
support to stimulate domestic tourism.”

Intel says the production of its
next-generation chips will be set
back until 2022, following years of
delays getting its current-generation
chips on sale.The company
said it was exploring "contingency
plans" such as having third-party
manufacturers produce some of
its products.
In June, Apple said it would
transition its Mac computers away
from Intel processors and design
its own chips. Industry experts are
saying that Intel are risking leaving
a gap for competitors to step
into.
The reason? Well Intel said
it had identified a "defect" in its
manufacturing process that led to
the new delay.
So what exactly is a next-generation
chip?
Chip-makers try to miniaturise
their technology and processes
so that they can pack more transistors
on to a single silicon chip
and doing so typically creates
faster processors which are more
energy-efficient. This can give
smartphones and laptops a longer
battery life, and reduce energy
consumption by data centres.
Intel's current-generation chips
are described as 10nm (nanometre)
chips, and its next-generation
will be 7nm chips.These numbers
used to be a measure of the tiny
spaces in between transistors on
a chip, but today they are simply
marketing terms.
"Today, the metric commonly
used by the experts to compare
two different technologies is the
transistor density," said Dr Ian
Cutress, senior CPU editor of the
technology news site AnandTech,
which reported Intel's announcement.
Intel's most dense 10nm
designs are broadly equivalent to
the most dense 7nm designs by
rival chip-maker TSMC, he said.
Is Intel's delay significant?
Well, a delay in producing
next-generation chips could give
rivals a head start.
There are two main parts to Intel's
business: it designs computer
chips and manufactures them.
Most of its rivals only do one or
the other.
TSMC simply manufactures
chips designed by other companies,
such as AMD and Apple.
"During most of the 2010s,
one of Intel's key marketable industry-leading
features was that
it was ahead of its competitors in
manufacturing technology," said
DrCutress. "In recent years, Intel
has been unable to develop new
leading manufacturing technologies
on its original timescales."
While Intel's current-generation
10nm chips were delayed by
more than two years, TSMC was
shipping its equivalent 7nm chips
in bulk to major customers such
as Apple, AMD, Huawei and Qualcomm.
AMD already has a generation
of current-generation chips
on sale, Intel has no answer for
similar products in desktop computing,
and is only promising a
small launch of its first generation
10nm server processors by the
end of the year.
With all the delays Intel had on
its 10nm production, its new 7nm
chips were meant to solve that
issue and make 10nm more of a
footnote in Intel's history. The delay
to 7nm implies Intel is having
issues with the development.
If Intel fails to execute properly,
then it leaves a large hole for its
main competition to step into, as
well as eroding 20 years of confidence
in Intel's ability to deliver
high-performance and high-efficiency
computing products, which
would be nothing short of disastrous
for Intel

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE
The DXY Dollar index, the
index that measures the U.S.
Dollar’s value against a basket
of major currencies was
choppy, but ultimately didn’t
move much, falling slightly
from 96.71 to 96.06. This
comes at a time when U.S.
tech stocks rose to all time
records and broader stock
markets rose to multi-month
highs, even in spite of the fact
that the U.S. now has a bigger
problem with coronavirus
infection rates than it did at
any time in the past. If a risk
off sentiment starts to prevail
in the stock markets, the
U.S. dollar may strengthen,
but gains will be capped by
the massive stimulus packages
that have been put in
place as well as the specter
of more to come. Against the
Thai Baht, the dollar moved
from 30.93 to 31.67 indicating
that the Baht weakened
during the period.
The British Pound moved
even lower from its 1.2348
level and hit 1.2250 before
rebounding back above 1.25
and passing the 1.2569 handle.
Looking at the past several
months the 1.25 level has
served as a center point of
a range that spans from approximately
1.2150 to 1.2850.
The pound has not held on to
levels below 1.20 or above
1.30 and so this range bound
activity may continue for a
while yet. If stock markets
sell off this could negatively
impact the GBPUSD cross
rate. Against the Thai Baht,
the pound moved from 39.06
to 39.81
The Japanese Yen has
been range bound as mixed
signals come from the other
side of the Pacific.
The JPYTHB cross rate
moved from 106.78 to 107.01
after hitting a high of 107.94.
It has not lost its safe haven
status during recent stock
market rises, and so more
strength could be on the
cards if equities take a turn
for the worse. Against the Thai
Baht, the Yen fetched 0.2930,
up from 0.2880, further confirming
Thai Baht weakness.
The Russian Ruble weakened
against an already weakening
U.S. dollar, moving from
69.70 to 71.96. Against the
Thai Baht, since both currencies
declined by about the
same amount, there was little
change in the cross rate which
moved from 0.445 to 0.420.
Ruble volatility continues to be
muted and there are no catalysts
to suggest a breakout in
either direction is likely to occur
just yet.
The Euro, again, has been
the biggest beneficiary of U.S.
Dollar weakness, moving from
1.1179 to 1.143. Since the
basket of currencies that make
up the DXY dollar index is
heavily weighted towards the
Euro, it is little wonder that it is
picking up the slack and rising.
Yet, Euro zone officials are still
embarking on their own additional
stimulus so it will be interesting
to see how long the
current uptrend can last.
Against the Thai Baht,
the rate moved strongly from
34.59 to 36.15, a multi-month
high.

JUST THE STATISTICS
While bar charts, line graphs
and simple numbers are hardly
capable of providing the defining
answer to many economic,
social and political questions,
they are certainly a good way
of obtaining a general overview
of any particular subject.
Each month the Business
Supplement will look into a
brace of statistical information
and provide readers with what
we consider to be the central
elements of these figures.
THAI’S ARE THE
4TH MOST
GENEROUS IN
THE WORLD
According to the Charities
Aid Foundation’s 2019 World
Giving Index, Thailand scored
4th in the entire world in terms
of the generosity of its citizens,
with 71 percent of people donating
money in the prior month
at the time of the report.
Myanmar came in at the
top position with 81 per cent
of people making a donation of
some kind.
It is speculated that the
reason for these two countries
being highly ranked is the fact
that there are a large number of
people offering food and other
requisites to the community of
Buddhist monks and nuns.
In second place on the list,
also at 71 per cent was the UK.
This may be unsurprising to
some since the sheer weight of
pressure from charities urging
people to make donations is
evident in everyday life there.
Elderly people are particularly
targeted by charities and with
an ageing population it is no
surprise that the UK ranks so
high.
Malta was in third place with
the same rate of the population
making a donation.
In 5th place was the Netherlands,
whilst in 6th and 7th
places were Ireland and Indonesia,
respectively.
Australia, New Zealand and
Canada rounded up the rest of
the top 10 positions in that order.
PHUKET RANKS
WELL FOR VEGAN
OPTIONS
In keeping with a Hayes and
Jarvis’s analysis of Trip Advisor
ratings late last year, Phuket
came in second place worldwide
for providing vegan options for
visitors and locals alike.
Fully 20.1 per cent of all
restaurants in Phuket were either
vegan or provided vegan
options.
Just beating Phuket to the
post was Dublin in first place,
with 21.1 percent of restaurants
providing vegan fare, or classified
as vegan establishments.
In third place was Amsterdam
with 19.8 per cent, followed
by London at 19 per cent and
Venice at 18.6 per cent.
The rest of the top 10 was
made up of cities that were
spread across the world far and
wide.
Florence made 6th place
with 18.4 per cent of restaurants
suitable for vegans, followed by
Orlando, Athens, New York and
Johannesburg with scores ranging
from 17.3 per cent to 15.5

BUILD YOUR EMAIL
MARKETING LISTS TO
EXPLODE YOUR REACH
There are many people who
will tell you that email marketing
is dead and many people
who will tell you it’s the way
they make most of their sales.
Only you can decide if email
marketing is right for you and
your business. The best way to
find out is to start building a list
and send out some newsletters
and marketing emails and
measure the response.
First of all you need to sign
up to an email marketing platform
such as Mailchimp. This
platform is free for up to 2000
email addresses but you must
have a domain based email
address not hotmail or gmail.
As long as you have an
email address on your own domain
then you are good to go!
Once you have signed up,
Mailchimp is pretty easy to
navigate and start building
your lists. It’s important that
you get permission from whoever
you intend to send mail to
as if you get too many unsubscribes
in your mailing campaigns
then your mailchimp
account can get suspended.
The worst case scenario is that
your entire domain could be
blacklisted meaning that your
emails always end up in spam.
For this reason, many people
recommend to buy a separate
domain just for email marketing
which is closely related to your
main domain. Example mydomain.com
and mydomain.net
You should also avoid buying
email lists as they can contain
old email addresses which
are no longer active and a high
number of bounced emails in
your marketing campaign can
also result in a banned account.
So, what is the right way to
do it?
The first thing to do is to
add an optin plugin to your
website. If you use Wordpress
(which you should be) you can
use Bloom plugin which adds a
sign up for our newsletter form
to your website and connects
to your mailchimp account.
You may wish to incentivise
people to join your list by giving
away something for free in
return for their email address.
In order to remain compliant
with GDPR and other regulations
then you should also
provide a check box for them
to subscribe for additional
emails. Most people will usually
subscribe.
You can also encourage
people to sign up to your mailing
list by leveraging email
only special deals. If people
know that not signing up is going
to cost them money then
you can rest assured that your
‘new signup list’ is going to be
full everyday.
If you sell many products
you can give your customers
the choice to just receive
emails about products they
may be interested in as opposed
to your entire product
catalogue.
When it’s done correctly,
email marketing can be a great
way to expand your reach. If
you need help with an email
marketing campaign please

FITNESS & YOU
- THE KEY TO A BETTER LIFE -
For those people who take
their health and well-being seriously,
it’s always a battle between
the desire to have the
best equipment and having the
budget to afford it. Even the
best home use equipment
can cost a
fortune let alone
thinking about full
commercial grade
kit. Everyone
has
their favourite
pieces
of
cardio
equipment
and
of course
a decent
home gym
wouldn’t be
complete
without a
set of freeweights
and bars,
but add
all this together
and
costs start
to add
up and
makes
the the dream less attainable.
Buying cheap home use
equipment, to those who take
things more seriously, is also
not a thought worth entertaining.
Cheaper price means lower
quality and more chance of
something going wrong. Repairs
could be costly, long drawn-out
affairs. There are other options
however.
1. Many companies use
demo machines to show big
name gyms the latest model,
once these machines have fulfilled
their purpose, they are
sold off at a cheaper price to get
back the original investment.
Some of these machines may
still be under the manufacturers
warranty. This represents excellent
value, although the equipment
may not be brand new and
straight out of the box, being a
commercial grade piece, it will
more than likely be in excellent
condition and under normal
home use, will last a hundred
years!!
2. Superseded model, or
end of production. When a new
model is released, many companies
like to clear out remaining
stocks of the old model to
BUSINESS SUPPLEMENT
make way for the incoming new
designs. It may not be the latest
and greatest, but it is by no
means a bad deal. Again, these
commercial models will last decades
when used by one or two
people at home and as above,
may even still carry the manufacturers
full commercial warranty.
3. Trade-ins. When big box
clubs catering to large membership
bases update their equipment,
they usually trade-in the
old models in to get something
back on their original investment.
More often than not,
these machines have been under
a yearly service contract
and although have had high usage,
they have been well taken
care of. Belts replaced and oiled
regularly. Most equipment suppliers
will happily sell these on
at more or less the same price
they bought it for in order to get
it off their hands quickly. The
last thing they need is a warehouse
full of equipment just
getting older. These machines
rarely have any manufactures
warranty left but if purchased
through a reputable dealer, you
will have after sales service and
support just a phone call away.
All of the above options
gives you a more reasonable
entry into the world of quality
health and fitness equipment.
High end brands and affordable
prices. SEARA is a company
that has been in business for 27
years in Thailand and has built
a reputation of being a trusted
and respected business partner
to both Commercial and Home
Use markets and from time to
time has stocks of good quality
equipment as mentioned in the
above article. You are more than
welcome to come and see what
is available either in the Pattaya
showroom or in the large warehouse
facility located an hour or
so drive towards Bangkok.
Investing in your health and
well-being is never something
that should be taken lightly and
it might just be worth the extra
digging around to try to find a
better quality of equipment at
an affordable price than simply
looking at the the cheapest easiest
option that may may end up
costing you more in the long run

AGODA JOINS
THAILAND’S
LARGEST - EVER PROGRAM TO
BOOST DOMESTIC TOURISM
BUSINESS SUPPLEMENT
Agoda has announced a partnership
with the Tourism Authority
of Thailand (TAT), Ministry of
Tourism and Sports, Fiscal Policy
Office, Ministry of Finance,
and Krungthai Bank PCL to support
the ‘Rao Tiew Duay Gan’,
or TTogether stimulus project to
boost domestic travel.
Agoda’s Bangkok based
technology team has developed
tech and marketing solutions to
simplify the search, booking,
and payment processes for eligible
Thai travelers joining the
government’s subsidy program,
and booking participating hotels
via Agoda’s dedicated platform
www.agoda.com/ttogether.
The TTogether tourism stimulus
encourages Thai travelers
to plan inter-provincial trips to
book and stay between 18 July
and 31 October 2020, to help
revive domestic tourism and
support hoteliers and the tourism
industry in the 76 provinces
across the country. The government
will subsidize 40% of room
night rates, up to 3,000 THB
per night, for up to five nights
per person. Over 5 million room
nights are offered as part of this
Thai government initiative.
From 15 July 2020, travelers
can register to participate in the
TTogether program on the program’s
website, and once registered
can book via Agoda mobile
application. From 6 am, 18 July
2020, travelers can quickly and
easily see the great deals from
participating hotels on Agoda’s
dedicated platform, which will
highlight destinations across
the country to encourage Thai
travelers to visit more of Thailand,
beyond traditionally popular
destinations. Agoda’s platform
can help distribute tourism
spend to benefit the wider Thai
tourism economy.
For hoteliers, Agoda’s automation
of processes will provide
advantages, particularly to independent
hotels throughout Thailand,
to allow them to manage
these bookings more efficiently.
Agoda’s technology simplifies
participation in this initiative by
making it easier to receive payment
quickly for the room, and
reducing manual steps in the eligibility
verification process.
John Brown, Chief Executive
Officer of Agoda, said: “As one
of the biggest digital accommodations
platforms in Thailand,
we are delighted to partner with
the Tourism Authority of Thailand
(TAT), Ministry of Tourism
and Sports, Fiscal Policy Office,
Ministry of Finance, and
Krungthai Bank PCL to use our
technology to help enhance
the customer experience when
booking one of these fabulous
value deals offered by the ‘Rao
Tiew Duay Gan’ campaign. Thailand
is one of our most exciting
markets, as well as being home
to our major operations center,
so we are proud to be able to
help Thai travelers to explore
and experience all the beauty
and diversity Thailand has to
offer.
There will be thousands of
hotels to choose from all across
76 provinces in Thailand on the
Agoda platform, which means
we will also be supporting safe
and sustainable travel, and
sharing the tourism benefits
across the country.”
By using its state-of-art and
best-in-class technology, developed
by its Thai tech talent in
Bangkok, Agoda is innovating
the way people travel and creating
more personalized experiences
for travelers worldwide.
Agoda helps everyone travel
anywhere, offering over 2.5
million great value properties
across 200 countries and territories,
including Thailand.
