Similar levels of demand
were experienced at the other
Christchurch centre at 401
Madras St in the central city,
she said.
To meet this demand, she
said another testing centre at
170 Orchard Rd, Harewood,
would open today “until
further notice.”
Callahan said the number
of people visiting Canterbury
testing stations yesterday was
“unprecedented.”
She urges people not to
panic and attempt to see
their GP or phone Healthline
first before going to testing
centres.
“The demand has been
unprecedented. I mean, this
is an exceptional situation
but we hope people will calm
down a bit and, actually if
they are unwell, they should
be seeing their doctor and, if
in doubt, then they could be
tested.”
She said people lining up
at Canterbury testing centres
should expect “a lengthy
wait” and only people with
symptoms should go to
them.
In spite of being busy
yesterday, she said testing
centres are coping and pressure
will be eased with the
Orchard Rd centre opening.
Meanwhile, long lines for
BUS PASSENGERS are
being urged to avoid
travelling at peak times
following the move to alert
level 2.
Environment Canterbury
senior manager, public
transport, Stewart Gibbon
said the regular bus timetables
will continue to operate
but the network’s urban service
capacity will be limited,
particularly at peak times.
“We are asking people to
avoid using public transport
between 7am and 9am and
2.30pm and 5.30pm on
weekdays, where possible,”
he said.
However, the Metro
school bus network will operate
at full capacity because
testing centres were also a
reality in other parts of the
country yesterday.
Auckland was one of the
busiest areas with reports of
lines stretching for 2km.
A testing centre in Hamilton
also reported being
overwhelmed, and turning
people away.
Two of the of four new
community-transmitted
cases – a woman in her 20s
and a child – travelled to
Rotorua over the weekend
while she was symptomatic.
They visited family and some
tourist locations.
The ministry is working to
find out where else she went
in Rotorua.
Meanwhile, long queues
of people lined to get
into supermarkets in
Christchurch yesterday.
Avoiding peak time for bus travel advised
of schools’ ability to contact
trace.
Gibbon said the Bus Interchange
will remain open,
with front-door bus boarding.
Passengers should leave
via the rear doors, unless
they need to use the ramp.
Masks will be available at
the interchange.
Passengers need to observe
social distancing rules
and sit in bus window seats,
unless seated next to someone
they know. They should
also wear a mask, especially
when social distancing is
difficult, and provide contact
tracing information.
