With AmericanLegion, Babe Ruth and many AAUtournaments initially postponed bythe pandemic, many players wereleft with few options.But as a group of Lynnfield ballplayersfound once the state movedinto Phase 3, there’s always a placeto play -- and that place has been thenewly formed Northeast BaseballLeague.“We’re just happy to be ableto get back out on the field andplay, it’s been so great,” said LukeMartinho, who was set to be a juniorcaptain on the Lynnfield High baseballteam this past spring.The Northeast Baseball League issomething, like many things thesedays, that sprung up in the aftermathof the pandemic. Players looking fora place to play and coaches lookingfor a place to coach turned into anine-team league full (Lynnfield,Lowell, Dracut, Tyngsborough,Westford, Wilmington, Billerica,Newton and North Reading) ofplayers from around the North Shoreand beyond. When it came time tofind a coach for the Lynnfield team,Luke’s father Anthony Martinhostepped in.“This has been a great thingfor the kids to just be able to getback out and play,” said AnthonyMartinho. “Obviously it’s not thesame as getting to compete in yourhigh school season that all theseguys worked so hard for, but it’s anice substitute given the situation.”And while the team was made upof mostly players from LynnfieldHigh, the inclusion of Lynnfieldnatives from other schools -- likeMalden Catholic star Hayden Bond-- added a fun twist for all involved.It was a quick season -- only 12games -- but it was an opportunityto get back out on the field.Lynnfield suffered a few injuries,including a bad back for Martinhoand a broken wrist for Bond, andthe team finished 6-5-1 in the Southdivision. Wilmington ended up winningthe South division at 8-3-1,while Newton won the North divisionat 7-3-1.“It’s been really cool getting allthese guys on the team together andwatching them play,” said AnthonyMartinho.“It’s been a really fun time gettingtogether with these guys,” saidLuke Martinho. “We all know eachother from playing in town leaguesand on other teams all our lives, soit’s always fun to get out on the fieldwith them.”As the league’s inaugural seasoncomes to an end, its players are beginningto shift their focus to thepotential of fall baseball or otherfall sports.But for a few weeks in thestrangest summer anyone can remember,they were able to find afew great games out on the baseballdiamond.FILE PHOTOLuke Martinho missed his junior season at Lynnfield last spring. ForImpact Sports Lab, whichis owned by Lynnfield’s IanCarrera and opened in January,it’s been an interesting ride.“Anytime I tell anybody thatwe opened in January, I getthe familiar ‘wow, talk aboutbad timing’ jokes and thingslike that, but we’re just goingthrough this like everyone else,”said Carrera. “We’re all in thistogether, and we had to adapt tothe changing times quickly.”Impact Sports Lab is a youthsports performance center, buteven that doesn’t accurately describethe amount of work athletesdo there. The center’s missionstatement -- “DevelopingSmarter Athletes” -- might noteven fully explain it.“We do a lot with the athleteswho come here, and it’s not justphysically working out,” saidCarrera. “For younger athleteswho are still developing, youhave to approach things in adifferent way. There are waysto work with these athletes tomake sure they don’t get burntout or suffer what I call ‘preventativeinjuries.’”While traveling internationallyfor soccer with his sonChase -- a 12-year-old who hasroughly 50,000 followers onInstagram and who has playedat a number of European socceracademies -- Carrera noticedhow the European academiesdeveloped their youth athletesand figured there was a wayhe could bring that home to theUnited States.“Obviously as a training facilityone of the key aspects ofour work is helping these athletesget better physically, butthat’s far from all we do here,”said Carrera. “We also helpthese athletes academically, incorporatingacademic coachinga few times a week so kids cancome here and do their schoolworkbefore starting their physicalwork. The third aspect ofwhat we do is the mental aspect.You can be a great athlete, butthe mental part of the game iswhat can put you over the edge.So we really do try to take afully holistic approach wherewe blend everything together totry and make these athletes thevery best they can be.”But Chase, who works outat the Woburn facility multipletimes a week, isn’t the onlyLynnfield athlete working outthere. Some of the many athleteswho have come throughthe doors including brothersClayton and Cooper Marengiand recent St. John’s Prep graduateAnthony Fagan. All threeplayers came to the center inorder to keep themselves readyfor what they hope to be theirupcoming college football seasons-- the Marengis at EndicottCollege and Fagan at StonehillCollege.“The Marengis are greatand they came to the facilitylooking to stay ready for football,and they’ve been here forabout a month and they come inabout three times a week,” saidCarrera. “They have such greatwork ethic and really do a greatjob when they’re here.“Anthony is a friend ofClayton’s and he reached outafter hearing good things, andhe’s been coming consistentlyas well,” Carrera added.Carrera also points out thatthe center has trained athletesfrom all sports, including football,soccer, hockey, baseballand many others. It’s notabout what sport you play, saysCarrera, it’s about being thebest athlete you can be.“Our goal here isn’t necessarilyto make you a professionalathlete or something likethat,” said Carrera. “Our goalis to have our athletes who arehere working out now at 15,16, 17 years old look back in10 years when they’re workingat a hospital or a law firm orsomething and say, ‘hey, ImpactSports Lab really helped memake the best of myself.’”The new era of COVID-19has brought in some new protocols,but nothing drasticallydifferent from what the centerwas already doing. The trainingsessions are done in groups ofno more than six athletes, andmany online workouts andclasses are also offered for thosewho are still not willing to comeback to the physical facility.In addition to hosting athletesat the center, ImpactSports Lab has also partneredwith the Lynnfield Parks andRecreation Department to offersummer programs to kids.While COVID-19 put a stop tothe partnership initially, ImpactSports Lab has been able towelcome those kids who signedup through the recreationdepartment.“It’s been great to be involvedwith them, we know them verywell and we were really lookingforward to all the programs beforeCOVID hit,” said Carrera.“But luckily we’ve been ableto get in touch with all the kidswho signed up through the recdepartment and we’ve beenable to have them come to thefacility for their programs.”
