CHANGES are<br />
always challenging.<br />
During the lockdown, I heard<br />
many comments from people<br />
about the value of our “essential<br />
workers” and how much more<br />
they were appreciated. Of course,<br />
all those who work in our health<br />
system were high on the list. But<br />
so were others, less obvious but<br />
very important.<br />
They included our shop workers<br />
who kept us supplied with<br />
our groceries but also worked<br />
exceptionally hard to ensure that<br />
we shopped in safety. At the local<br />
Redcliffs New World, as I stood<br />
in the social distanced queue,<br />
many people noted the staff’s<br />
attention to sanitation and how<br />
friendly they were to people who<br />
were sometimes impatient but<br />
who were also anxious about the<br />
Covid-<strong>19</strong> situation.<br />
So when the announcement<br />
came that New World Redcliffs<br />
was to be no longer and was being<br />
replaced by Four Square, and<br />
that some of these valued staff<br />
would not have their jobs, there<br />
was understandably a negative<br />
community response.<br />
So I want to put in a big<br />
plug for our new Four Square<br />
supermarket. I remember very<br />
soon after the February 22, 2011,<br />
quakes when the supermarket<br />
was destroyed, Foodstuffs was<br />
very hesitant about rebuilding.<br />
I argued strongly for the<br />
supermarket to come back but<br />
understood that even prior to the<br />
earthquakes, the viability of the<br />
business was not strong.<br />
That situation has, sadly, not<br />
changed. What has changed is<br />
our shopping habits and the<br />
local New World was not sustainable.<br />
Foodstuffs could have taken<br />
the call to just quit the area<br />
completely. But they remain<br />
committed to serving the local<br />
community so took the tough<br />
call to change to Four Square. It<br />
has been a very tough time for<br />
everyone but especially for the<br />
workforce.<br />
We all need to get behind this<br />

local business if it is going to<br />
survive. No-one would want to<br />
see it fail so, now more than ever,<br />
it’s time to put our money where<br />
our mouth is and watch this<br />
supermarket flourish.<br />

•Stronger regional economies through the Provincial Growth<br />
Fund.<br />
•Targeted government assistance for the development of small<br />
and medium businesses.<br />
•An immigration policy strictly targeted to genuine labour and<br />
skills shortages.<br />
•Always looking after the elderly and all vulnerable groups.<br />
