Shooting At A Farmer by Bob Massey In June 1876, a strange event took place in the fields of Burton Joyce that was reported in great detail at the time. William Brett was a local farmer who farmed about 350 acres and employed four men in the 1870s. On 28th June he was out shooting at Crow Park Hill. At the time the land belonged to the Earl of Canarvon, and was occupied by a Miss Tomlinson. William had had Miss Tomlinson’s permission to shoot over the land for several years. He was shooting rabbits and had been there for about 15 minutes when the vicar of St Helen’s, the Rev. Henry Courthey Jenoure, approached him across the fields. Rev. Jenoure shouted out, “You there! wait.” Rev. Jenoure was then about 130 or 140 yards away with a field and two fences between them. Rev. Jenoure called out, “Do you intend going away?” William replied that he did not intend to go away, to which Rev. Jenoure replied, “I will make you,” and came towards him with a stick in his hand. After Rev. Jenoure had got into the field of mowing grass that divided them, he turned back and called out to his 14yr old son, “Stan, go into the house and fetch the gun and shoot him.” William then saw the young Stanthorpe Jenner go into the house and come out with a gun. Stan then came up to the fence and levelled the gun at William and fired. William heard some of the shots go into a tuft of nettles near to where he was standing, but he was not hit. When he then shouted to Rev. Jenoure, the latter said that he (William) was too far off for the shot to hurt him. The measured distance from where the shot was fired and where he (complainant) stood, was found to be 110 yards. Rev. Jenoure then said, “Is that Mr Brett I beg ten thousand pardons. I thought it was Mark Bagaley or I would not have shot at you.” Mark Bagaley was the local Farm Bailiff at the time. William then pointed out that even if it was mistaken identity, the reverend gentleman had no right to order Mark Bagaley off the land as he had every right to be there. Rev. Jenoure said he would not have Bagaley on the land and that he, the Rev. Jenoure, also had a right to shoot over the land. William said that this did not give him the right to order other farmers off. There was no road between Rev. Jenoure ‘s land and Crow Park Hill and there had already been a long standing dispute over the right of shooting over the fields in question. Even though Rev. Jenoure and William Brett did not fall out over the incident, the matter was eventually taken to court. In the end, the case was found in favour of William Brett and the vicar and his son were ordered to pay a fine of £5 each for the shooting. However, this was not the end of the story. The local parishioners of St Helen’s, including William Brett, held a meeting supporting their vicar, who they held in high regard. They raised £24 which they gave to the vicar to pay the two fines. He therefore ended up £14 to the good out of the incident! I am researching the history of the ng14 villages and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information.
