BELGIUM<br />

PETER PAUL RUBENS<br />

On March 12, Belgium issued a souvenir sheet of five<br />

stamps featuring details of masterworks from Flemish<br />

artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), one of the most<br />

influential of Baroque painters.<br />

AUSTRIA<br />

MOTORCYCLE<br />

Austria on March 17 issued a single stamp featuring a classic<br />

1954 KTM R125 Tourist motorcycle designed by Hans<br />

Trunkenpolz, who started his first shop 20 years earlier. <strong>The</strong><br />

bike featured a 6.1-HP two-stroke engine, telescopic fork,<br />

kick starter, three-speed gearbox and upholstered seat.<br />

MONACO<br />

SEA TURTLES<br />

On March 7, Monaco released a stamp honoring the Care<br />

Center for Sea Turtles, a new center supported by the Oceanographic<br />

Museum of Monaco and the French Mediterranean<br />

Turtle Care Network in partnership with the Center for the<br />

Study and Protection of Mediterranean Sea Turtles.<br />

CANADA<br />

LOTUS<br />

Canada on March 1 issued a<br />

pair of colorful stamps featuring<br />

two lotus species: the<br />

pink and white sacred lotus, a<br />

native of India with religious<br />

significance to Buddhists and<br />

Hindus; and the <strong>American</strong><br />

yellow lotus, Canada’s only<br />

indigenous lotus. <strong>The</strong> stamp<br />

designs are based on watercolors<br />

by Eunike Nugroho.<br />

FRANCE<br />

SPORTS AUTHORITY<br />

On March 26, France issued a stamp with a tab honoring the<br />

ASPTT Omnisports Federation, founded in 1898 by postal<br />

workers. <strong>The</strong> stamp shows silhouettes of men and women<br />

participating in lifelong sports such as tennis and cycling.<br />

One athlete is in a wheelchair.<br />

AUSTRALIA<br />

JAMS<br />

Australia Post on March 6<br />

paid tribute to one of the first<br />

locally manufactured foods –<br />

jam – with a set of four stamps<br />

depicting vintage paper labels<br />

common from the late 19th<br />

through mid-20th centuries.<br />

Along with the Alva dark plum<br />

jam, the set includes Peacock’s<br />

apricot, Kingurli Prince<br />

Englebert (plums) and Melray<br />

blackberry jams.<br />
