Mayo bike ride raises $22,000<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> cyclist Clayton Howard<br />

has helped raise $22,000 for Burwood<br />

SpinalUnit Hospital and Westpac<br />

Helicopter’s LifeFlightthrougha<br />

charity bike ride.<br />

The 72­year­old joined 17 other<br />

bikersonthe Tour To Mayo.The<br />

South Island leg covered the 400km<br />

distance from Picton to Burwood<br />

Hospital via Kaikoura and Hurunui.<br />

While Claytonwas on histrusty<br />

mountain bike, all other cyclists were<br />

on road bikesand one rode an<br />

electric bike.<br />

Riders rode in two pelotons andfor<br />

much of the five­day trip conditions<br />

were good.<br />

‘‘The windwas not toobad overall,<br />

butwehit bad weather whenwe<br />

headedinlandtoHurunui.<br />

‘‘Wehad rain, hail andsnowand it<br />

wasverycold, so to avoid getting<br />

hypothermiaweweretransported<br />

over a20km section.’’<br />

Clayton said he was the oldest rider<br />

on the tour andthe leastexperienced<br />

on the road.<br />

Safety had been paramount for<br />

cyclists and he had enjoyed the<br />

experience.<br />

The Tour to Mayo wasorganisedto<br />

show support for cyclistElton Mayo,<br />

whohad acyclingaccident that left<br />

him paralysed.<br />
