The 112-cap former All Black
was ultimately unable to feature
in Super Rugby Aotearoa due to
niggling injuries.
But he was able to return to his
spiritual home for Southbridge’s
42-39 victory on Saturday where
he played the entire game,
scoring a try and slotting five
conversions.
Waihora also qualified for
Saturday’s final at Southbridge
Domain by beating Darfield
20-15.
Prebbleton president Jeromy
Knowler had no qualms
about Carter playing and the
circumstances around him
fronting in the sudden death
clash.
“I was surprised to hear he was
going to be there,” Knowler said.
“They (Southbridge) said he
was eligible so we just ran with
that. It was ticked off and given
the thumbs up.
“It was disappointing to get
knocked out but it was good to
see a bit of class from Dan Carter
on the field.
“He did some really good
things, but he put a few balls out
on the full as well. It wasn’t the
Dan Carter show by any stretch,
he was probably a bit rusty.”
Sub union board chairman
Chris Thornley, a past president
of the Waihora club, will be
hoping Carter isn’t quite on
his game this weekend, if he is
available for Southbridge.
“I couldn’t see why he wouldn’t
be playing. You don’t often get
to play a class player like that …
you’ve got to really enjoy it. It’s
the best promotion Ellesmere
rugby could ever have,” Thornley
said.
“He got dispensation way back
at the start of Covid. It’s clear
in the rules that international
players can get dispensation.
“It’s not a hidden secret. You’ve
got to promote Ellesmere rugby
every way you possibly can.”
A Southbridge spokesman was
unsure whether Carter would be
available until later in the week
with the team to be finalised after
training on Thursday.
“It’s just great for players like
that to even want to be playing
club rugby,” he said.
Defibrillator, headsets
stolen from rugby club
• By Matt Slaughter
A POTENTIALLY life-saving
defibrillator and other items
including two headsets
were stolen from Lincoln
Rugby Club’s clubrooms
at the weekend.
Mark Tweedy,
president of the club’s
golden oldies team
(Lincoln Lizards) said
the defibrillator was only
purchased about a month
ago.
Tweedy said in spite of the
rugby season nearly being over,
some mainly junior teams are
still playing and players and
supporters at games will not
have access to a defibrillator if
it is needed until the new one
arrives.
“If something happens to a
player or a supporter or a parent,
we haven’t got anything there to
help them.”
THE FIRST stage of the project
to upgrade Pines Resource
Recovery Park has been
completed.
It comprised of the construction
of underground services,
utilities, drainage as well as
THe Lincoln Lizards
purchased the $4000
defibrillator and two $1000
headsets, which officials use to
communicate with each
other during games, using
the club’s own funds.
Tweedy said a club
member’s vehicle in the
car park was also broken
into and bottles of port and
wine were stolen from the
club’s fridge.
Police fingerprinted the
scene on Monday.
Tweedy said footage of a blue
Ford Falcon pulling up next
to the clubrooms at 9.15pm on
Saturday night has been handed
to police.
He said the items stolen are
insured but it may take some
time for a new defibrillator to
arrive from Auckland.
Acting Senior Sergeant Phil
Bayne said police investigations
into the burglary are ongoing.
Progress at recovery park
asphalt surfacing.
The foundations for the recycling
canopy are also complete.
Construction on stage two of
the project is scheduled to begin
in November with completion
forecast for October next year.
