Clock winds back for
former race car driver
• By Matt Slaughter
A FORMER race car driver
took a ride down memory lane
when a Jaguar C-Type visited his
retirement village in Sumner.
Denis Stanton, who lives
at Edith Cavell Lifecare and
Village, was able to relive
his racing days when Craig
Pidgeon, the son of one of
Stanton’s race car partners, took
him for a spin.
In his heyday, the 81-year-old
drove race cars including an
Austin A35, an Austin A40
Farina and a Ford Anglia at race
tracks throughout New Zealand.
He was one of the first people
to drive on Ruapuna Raceway
in Templeton when it opened in
1963.
“I raced at Ruapuna, Wigram,
the track in Blenheim, the one
in Timaru, and Waimate.
“It was just a hobby. My
parents were dead against it, you
know, they didn’t like me doing
that sort of thing but, looking
back on it, I think it kept me
alive because I never had a
smash.”
He said the ride around Sumner
and Lyttleton took him back
THRILL: Edith Cavell Lifecare and Village resident Denis
Stanton was taken for a drive in a classic Jaguar C-Type by
Craig Pidgeon.
to his younger days.
“It was like growing up again.
“We drove over the hill to Lyttelton
and around Summit Rd
which was rather nice actually,”
he said.
He said Pidgeon kept to the
speed limit for the duration of
the journey.
The retirement village’s other
residents were able to get a close
up look at the classic race car.
No fibre internet
for settlements
FIBRE BROADBAND will
not extend to a clutch of Banks
Peninsula settlements despite
a community board bid to get
shovel-ready funding from the
government.
The Peninsula board’s pitch
was rejected on the basis it was
not considered cost effective
given the sparsely populated terrain
of an essentially rural area.
Knocking-back the plan,
Broadcasting, Communications
and Digital Media Minister Chris
Faafoi said most peninsula communities
will have broadband in
2023.
It will be provided by the rural
broadband initiative, which use
cellular and wireless technologies
to get to remote locations, he told
the board.
“Based on these network
deployments, it is estimated that
once the programme has been
completed, approximately 98
per cent of people living on the
peninsula will have broadband
available to them.”
The board wanted a “shovel
ready” initiative to get fibre
broadband to Lyttelton West
to Charteris Bay, Okains Bay,
Pigeon Bay, Le Bons Bay and
Birdlings Flat.
The settlements are the most
populous on the peninsula with
no planned fibre rollout.
The plan would “inject jobs
into the local economy, aiding
recovery from Covid-19,” board
chairwoman Tori Peden said in a
letter to the minister.
On behalf of her board, she
said it was unacceptable communities
in the greater Christchurch
area did not have mobile
networks or access to reliable, fast
broadband.
It was “critical our communities
have access to the broadband
infrastructure required to stay
reliably connected with each
other and key services.”
Many people in the far-flung
communities continued to need
broadband for work, remote
learning and socialising during
the Covid-19 pandemic.
The peninsula was periodically
isolated during natural disasters,
so there was a pressing need
and ongoing need to improve
broadband, the minister was told.
Faafoi told the board has
asked officials to explore how
connectivity gaps can be
addressed.
