Cold water fundraiser buys lifesaving equipment

will enter summer with new
lifesaving equipment thanks to a
group of cold water swimmers.
The Scarborough Dippers
plunged into the wintery ocean at
7am every morning during July
and in the process raised $5800
to be divided between the two
clubs.
The money will go toward
equipment such as rescue tubes,
binoculars and training boards
for junior surf lifesavers.
It was the fourth year the Scarborough
Dippers held the Wet
July challenge.
Group founder Kerry Newton
said two of the dippers are active
members of the surf clubs. Surf
lifesavers play a vital role in protecting
the public over summer.
“As a group we all love the sea,
but know how dangerous it can
be. Having the skills and knowledge
of the surf lifesavers on our
beaches means will can all enjoy
the water safely.”
Wayne Simmons, from the
Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club,
said Covid-19 restrictions had
affected other funding.
“This year has been a tough
one for the clubs, so funding
generated from an initiative such
as Wet July has meant we can
invest in the equipment needed
to keep our local beaches safe,”
Mr Simmons said.

art fundraiser will showcase
more than 40 local artists. ​

MT PLEASANT School’s
biggest annual fundraiser will
feature more than 40 local
artists.
The Mt Pleasant Memorial
and Community Centre will
next week become an art gallery
and home to more than 500
pieces of art.
The art will be sold and profits
will go to projects at the school.
It last year helped the
construction and completion
of a new library, which is
among other site developments
following the earthquakes.
Event organiser Julia Metcalfe
said the focus of this year’s appeal
was keeping kids active
through sport.
The school had a decade
without a hall. It was rebuilding
a new one so needed additional
funding to help buy new sports
equipment.
Event organisers initially
struggled to get the event
over the line due to public gathering
restrictions caused
by Covid-19.
They were determined to see
it happen, even if postponement
was the answer.
“It has been a real struggle.
Too much work goes into it,
so it won’t be cancelled – just
postponed.”
The exhibition starts
with a gala evening next
Friday, including live art
auctions,
and will run in conjunction
with the Mt Pleasant Farmers
Market the following day.
Christchurch artist Harriet
Millar is the exhibition’s featured
artist.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
The gala evening is a ticketed
event.
