AN IDEA to change Rolleston’s
New World into a Pak ‘N Save
appears to be fading.
Selwyn Times readers have reacted
strongly against the move
since the newspaper revealed the
potential plan late last month.
Foodstuffs, which owns both
brands,
had gained
resource
consent from
the district
council to
make the
change if it
wanted to.

company was constantly looking
ahead at what growing communities
like Rolleston might
need “from us in the future and
make provision for these as the
opportunities arise.”
“New World is absolutely here
to stay. It has been a part of the
community for 20 years and we
were thrilled to hear how much
locals love their store and we
want them to know there’s absolutely
no cause for concern.
“There are no plans for any
changes to the New World
Rolleston store any time soon
and New World is absolutely
here to stay in Rolleston.”
Davidson said the public feedback
to the Selwyn Times did not
influence their thinking.

The possible change was
included in the Rolleston town
centre plan, group manager
property Douglas Marshall said
this was purely for planning
purposes.
“With regards to the council’s
planning for the Rolleston town
centre, it was important for the
council to consider what impact
possible developments nearby
would have.
“No further applications from
Foodstuffs have been lodged
with council. As with any
resource consent, the applicant
has up to five years to exercise
this consent.”

SALMON RUN GO-AHEAD
The annual Rakaia Salmon Run
multi-sport event will go ahead
next month. The Rakaia Lions
Club and volunteer committee
are organising the event,
sponsored by Jackson Holmes,
which will be held on October
17. Member Jo Burrows said the
committee held a meeting last
week to discuss the continuation
of the event in light of Covid-19.
“We would like everyone to
know that we are still adamant
and confident that the event will
go ahead and that our planning
is continuing as per normal,”
she said. Every precaution will
be taken with the event and
protocols required at the time
will be closely followed, said

DISTRICT PLAN REVIEW
The proposed new district plan is
expected to be notified for public
consultation next month. The
plan is essentially the district’s
rule book on how land can be
used and developed. A district
council spokesman said the
consultation period will last
eight weeks. A review is being
undertaken to make sure the
plan is still fit for purpose and up
to date. All councils are required
to review their plan every 10
years.
