The Medical Economics and Management Committee (MEM) has
recognized that over the coming years health information technology
will transform the practice of neurology. The adoption of electronic
prescribing and electronic health records (EHR) is inevitable. The MEM
wants to help Academy members apply health information technology
to their practices to make patient care safer, more efficient, and more
productive. In 2006, the EHR Work Group completed an evaluation of
seven EHR vendors who make EHRs that are potentially appropriate for
neurologists in practice. Member interest in this report generated more
than 2,000 downloads from the AAN website. The EHR Work Group
will continue to assess EHR vendors and will evaluate the relationship
between ePrescribing and EHRs. The MEM will continue to sponsor a
variety of courses at regional conferences and the Annual Meeting on the
adoption of health information technology by neurologists.
