• 100 TH GuIDELINE PuBLISHED. The AAN’s 100 th guideline was one
of four addressing Parkinson’s disease, which generated considerable
public and professional interest. At a media conference, Robin Elliot,
executive director of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, praised the
guidelines for addressing the most important patient needs. Rasheda Ali,
author and daughter of Muhammad Ali, voiced widely broadcast public
service announcements promoting the guidelines, calling attention to
the specific, significant improvements to care.
• CLEARING THE AIR ON P4P AND QuALITy INITIATIVES. Several
AAN committees and work groups collaborated to protect the interests
of neurologists related to pay-for-performance and new quality-driven
programs. To help members better understand the ever-evolving and
often confusing developments, numerous articles were published in
AANnews ® and Neurology Today ® , and a pay-for-performance
presentation was developed and shared with neurologists at state
society meetings.
• LEADERSHIP PROVIDED ON QuALITy MEASuRES. The AAN is
spearheading quality measures for neurological conditions, ensuring
the use of evidence-based measures as accountability metrics. We led
the development of the Stroke and Stroke Rehabilitation Measurement
Set and supported the Geriatrics Measurement Set (including risk of
future falls) developed through the AMA’s Physician Consortium for
Performance Improvement. Both sets were endorsed by national quality
organizations and were incorporated in the CMS 2007 Physician
Quality Reporting Initiative.
• AAN SPONSORS MS CONSENSuS CONFERENCE. The Academy
convened stakeholders to identify gaps in multiple sclerosis care to
address in new guidelines. Participants, including 19 physicians and
seven patient groups, identified seven areas where increasing knowledge
and awareness of the current best evidence could improve the quality
of care.
• PATIENT SAFETy TIPS AND TOOLS DATABASE REVAMPED. The
Patient Safety Subcommittee launched a new web database of nearly
100 tips and implementation tools vetted by the Patient Safety Tips
and Tools Work Group.
