The Academy’s publishing activities also represent a significant share of all
revenues. The journal Neurology ® contributes over $7.5 million to the $9.4 million
in publishing revenues earned in 2006, and remains one of the most visible benefits
of membership.
The Annual Meeting continues to be the premier event for the Academy. The 2006
Annual Meeting revenues of $7.8 million represent 26 percent of total revenues.
San Diego set an attendance record for Annual Meetings to date.
Overall expenditures in 2006 were $25 million. Program expenditures represent
82 percent of total expenditures and include the following major areas:
• Annual Meeting expenditures consumed 25 percent of the organization’s
resources, providing significant opportunities for continuing medical
education and scientific presentations.
• Publication expenses include the cost of member subscriptions to Neurology ® .
• Our three boards and more than 50 supplementary standing committees,
subcommittees, and task forces contribute significantly to the overall direction
and operation of the Academy. Through these committees, members are
directly involved with determining strategic direction for the Academy, its
programs, and services.
• Support services are 18 percent of the $25 million of expense for 2006.
While this is up slightly from last year, it remains an enviable percentage,
allowing more dollars to be directed toward programs and services critical
to the mission of the Academy and its members.
