A central mission of the AAN is to advocate for sound public policies that positively affect neurologists and their patients. Through the Donald M. Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum and the Neurology on the Hill event in Washington, DC, we are empowered to become advocates. The Palatucci Forum has been described as ‘boot camp’ and Neurology on the Hill as the ‘battleground.’ The Forum gave me the skills needed to communicate effectively with legislators and media. On Capitol Hill, I practiced these skills live. I’ve come to understand that we are advocates on a daily basis, whether we realize it or not. But as the old adage goes, ‘there is strength in numbers,’ and the AAN provides these events to combine our voices and be heard. My advocacy buddies and the staff at the AAN are my resource, my encouragement, my counseling couch, and my secret weapon when I set out to battle! A C C O M P L I S H M E N T S • PASSAGE OF CRuCIAL VETERANS’ CARE LEGISLATION. The AAN, the Parkinson’s Action Network, and the National MS Society successfully teamed to urge Congress to authorize permanently six Parkinson’s disease (PADRECCs) and two MS Centers of Excellence at the uS Department of Veterans’ Affairs Health Administration. Through these centers, neurologists can provide top quality health care for the military population and perform leading research. This clinical and basic science research not only benefits veterans, but the entire nation as well. • NEW ADVOCACy INITIATIVES ON AED COVERAGE, MANDATORy REPORTING, NEuROIMAGING. A new position statement on coverage of anti-epileptic drugs for epilepsy patients enabled the AAN to weigh in on proposed legislation and regulation in many states. The Board also approved the first comprehensive position statement addressing driving and seizure disorders, and we began developing a comprehensive advocacy position to promote the role of neurologists in imaging. • RECORD NuMBER OF NEuROLOGISTS CONTACT CONGRESS. More than 1,300 AAN members—nearly 10 percent of our uS membership and a 15-percent increase over 2005—responded to our Congressional action alerts, making more than 5,000 contacts to Capitol Hill offices. • RECORD PARTICIPATION By AAN IN STATE NEuROLOGy SOCIETy MEETINGS. AAN staff exhibited and presented at 18 state neurology society meetings, a new high mark in the AAN’s outreach to and support of these important organizations. • STATE SOCIETy LEADERS’ ROuNDTABLE ESTABLISHED. We launched the State Society Leaders’ Roundtable to foster communication among state societies, gather feedback on how we can improve our support of state societies, and encourage better collaboration in the areas of practice, advocacy, and education. Leaders from 15 state societies participated in the first gathering.
