CANADA’S BU RUNWAY UND FAST TRACK REHABILITATI In just seven weeks, Canada’s busiest runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport was rehabilitated, despite 15 days of rain and an ambitious schedule that incorporated four phases of work into one construction period. SIEST ERGOES ON by Lisa Fattori Runway 05-23, along with five taxiways, required round-the-clock construction to minimize disruptions to airport operations and involved 400 workers at the peak of construction. The $<strong>30</strong> million project began April 28 and wrapped up May 16, on time and well ahead of the airport’s busy summer travel season. Runway 05-23 is one of the airport’s oldest runways, and was last rehabilitated in 2005. Originally a composite structure, the runway required removal of the surface pavement and subsurface course, as well as repairs to select areas of the concrete. The project took one year to plan, with consultations between engineering staff at the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and airline partners, as well as the airport’s air navigation provider, NAV CANADA. The partial closure of the runway, from March 28 to April 23, and full closure from April 24 to May 16, meant that aircraft movements would be more restrained from an airside capacity perspective.
