and Engineering School policy.The investigative committee serves in an advisory capacity to the Dean of the School. Itis expected to complete its investigation in a timely manner and submit a written reportto the Dean, who may accept or modify its findings and any recommendations it mayhave made to remedy the student’s complaint. The Dean will inform both the studentand the faculty member of the decision in writing.The Dean may discipline faculty members who are found to have committedprofessional misconduct. Any sanctions will be imposed in a manner that is consistentwith the University’s policies and procedures on faculty discipline. In particular, if theDean believes that the offense is sufficiently serious to merit dismissal, he or she caninitiate the procedures in Section 75 of the University Statutes for terminating tenuredappointments, and nontenured appointments before the end of their stated term, forcause.All aspects of an investigation of a student grievance are confidential. The proceedingsof the grievance committee are not open to the public. Only the student grievant andthe faculty member accused of misconduct receive copies of the decisions of theDean and the Provost. Everyone who is involved with the investigation of a grievance isexpected to respect the confidentiality of the process.Disputes Over Grades or Other Academic EvaluationsThe awarding of grades and all other academic evaluations rests entirely with thefaculty. If students have a concern relating to a particular grade or other assessment oftheir academic work, the student first should speak with the instructor of the class tounderstand how the grade or other evaluation was derived and to address thestudent’s specific concern.If the students do not feel comfortable speaking with the class instructor about thematter, they should then bring the issue to the attention of their advising dean(undergraduate students) or department chair (graduate students).If the students are unable thus to resolve the matter to their satisfaction and believethat a procedural issue is involved, they should bring the matter to the attention of theVice Dean. The Vice Dean will work with the student and the faculty to determinewhether there has been a procedural breach and if so, take immediate steps toremedy the matter. If the Vice Dean, together with appropriate faculty other than theinstructor, decides that there is no need for further action, the student will be informedand the decision will be final.Discrimination, Harassment, and Gender-Based MisconductSee Formal Complaint Procedures.53
Scientific or Scholarly MisconductComplaints against the School’s faculty that allege scientific or scholarly misconductare evaluated using other procedures. These are contained in the Columbia UniversityInstitutional Policy on Misconduct in Research.54
