EXAM BOARD: AQA

REASONS TO STUDY THIS COURSE

3 Consider the big questions such as: ‘What is

knowledge?’ ‘What do good, bad, right and wrong

really mean?’ ‘Is the concept of God incoherent?’ and

‘What is mind?’

3 Philosophy is a highly-regarded subject that will strongly

support university applications.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

Year 1 – Epistemology (the theory of knowledge) and Ethics.

Year 2 – Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Religion.

You will develop your knowledge of the most profound

areas of human thought and will possess abilities to

discuss, and critically evaluate, the most complex ideas in

both verbal and written formats.

Please note: Philosophy can only be taken as a two-year

A-Level course.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

Year 1 – mock exam

Year 2 (A-Level) – three-hour exam

Exams will be a mixture of compulsory short and long

essay questions.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE

THIS COURSE

• self-motivation

• ability to work independently

• enthusiasm for Philosophy

• ability to think conceptually and to grasp complex ideas

• high level writing skills

• ability to read and understand challenging texts

• English GCSE grade 6 or above, average GCSE grade

of 5.5 or above.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA

Philosophy Society meets fortnightly for students to engage in

wider debates. Students are also encouraged to complete an

Extended Project (EPQ) relating to a topic of their own choice.

3 This course offers a fantastic insight into the amazing

world of sports performance.

3 It is ideal for those who perform or coach on a regular

basis in one of the DfE approved activities (please

check your sport is included)

3 The course covers a broad spectrum of diverse topics

and therefore goes well with any combination of

subjects.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Analysis

and Technology in Sport, Skill Acquisition, Sports

Psychology and Sport and Society. You will study the

content of this course in both theoretical and practical

lessons

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

70% written examinations (multiple choice, single mark,

short answer and extended response questions)

15% assessment of your practical performances, as either

a coach or a performer and 15% written project (both

sections are based on a selected activity of your choice)

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE

THIS COURSE

• to be coaching or performing on a regular basis as

30% of the total mark is based on your practical ability

and knowledge within your chosen activity

• good understanding of science-based theory is

recommended

• ability to study independently, keeping up to date with

your course notes and meet deadlines

PROGRESSION

Range of career opportunities including sports

development, sport science, coaching, physiotherapy,

personal training or teaching. However, the course

covers a diverse range of topics and when studied in

conjunction with other subjects can lead to a variety of

career pathways. Please note that this course is

regarded as being scientifically robust and can be used

as an alternative to Biology to access many medicalbased

careers.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA

Guest speakers as well as visits such as to the

Manchester Velodrome or a training camp at Club La Santa

in Lanzarote. You will also be encouraged to gain workbased

and volunteering experience.
