REASONS TO STUDY THIS COURSE
3 It provides a dynamic learning experience to prepare
you for a career in sport.
3 The course combines practical and theoretical learning.
3 It will prepare you for university.
3 You can combine it with two or three other AS-Levels
and/or a sports academy.
3 It is an ideal alternative to A-Level PE if you do not
regularly play one of the sports on the exam boards list.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
Four units completed over two years.
Year 1 = two units (one externally assessed)
Year 2 = two units (one externally assessed)
The units include Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness
Training, Professional Development in Sport and Practical
Sport.
HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED
The external assessments will be either examinations or
set tasks which are marked by Pearson. The internally
assessed units will be created and set by your teachers
and could include such assessment methods as verbal
recordings, podcasts, observed practicals, written reports
and presentations.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE
THIS COURSE
• give grade 4s or above
• grade 4s in Maths and/or English
• passion for sport
PROGRESSION
The course is ideal preparation for Higher Education and
progression into careers in the sport sector. Students who
have completed the BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport
have gone onto pursue careers in teaching, sports
rehabilitation, coaching, fitness and sports development.
REASONS TO PARTICIPATE
3 There’s an academy for a variety of sports including
Football, Rugby League, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball
and Futsal.
3 There is the opportunity to compete at regional and
national level competitions.
3 You will receive an outstanding education at Priestley
alongside excellent coaching in your sport.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Once selected you will have your timetable adjusted to
allow for two training sessions and your Wednesday
afternoons will be free so that you can compete in
regional and national competitions. In addition to your
technical and tactical training sessions you will also have
access to strength and conditioning, nutritional advice
and support with sports injuries and rehabilitation.
HOW YOU WILL SUPPORTED
Regular feedback to help you improve your athletic
ability. Fitness assessments. Time in the gym to develop
speed and agility as well as strength and conditioning.
Support when recovering from injuries and advice on
how to return to full fitness.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
• to be highly motivated and determined to improve
• to be able to listen to constructive feedback
• a Priestley Sports kit provided by 1895 Sport or O’Neils
if you are part of the Rugby Academy
• appropriate footwear for gym, sports hall, astro turf
and grass.
• protective equipment based on your sport eg. shin
pads for football, gum shield for rugby etc.
PROGRESSION
We work with amateur, semi-professional and
professional sports clubs at regional, national and
international level so can provide a clear pathway into
sport at a range of levels. Former students have secured
professional contracts. Our strong links in America open
up the chance to secure a US scholarship.
PRIESTLEY EXTRA
The course runs alongside our sports academies which give
you the opportunity to compete at local, regional and national
level. We also offer coaching courses, volunteering
opportunities and a variety of trips to enhance your learning.
These range from visiting the Manchester Velodrome to a
warm weather training camp at Club La Santa in Lanzarote.
PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Trips abroad to Lanzarote and New York as well as
tours of professional clubs and St George’s Park. Visits from
professional athletes and coaches.
