Sweethearts for 70 years<br />

It’s amilestone few people will<br />
achieve,but teenage<br />
sweetheartsBob and Molly<br />
Riseley will soon celebrate<br />
their 70th wedding<br />
anniversary.<br />
Bob, 93, andMolly, 91,were<br />
married at the Knox<br />
Presbyterian Church in<br />
Invercargill on <strong>October</strong> 11,<br />
1950. Molly wore an impressive<br />
white dress made by her<br />
friend’smother.<br />
They couplefirst met,<br />
ironically, at awedding dance<br />
in Invercargill whenthey were<br />
both in their lateteens.<br />
They enjoyedatwoyear<br />
engagementbeforetying the<br />
knot.<br />
Bothlivedwith their parents<br />
before marriage, but Bob<br />
secured asmall twobedroom<br />
wooden house for them to start<br />
their lifetogether.<br />
Bob worked as acabinet<br />
maker in Invercargill and he<br />
ran the Otatarastore in<br />
partnership with mate Bruce<br />
Harringtonfor seven years<br />
from themid1950s.<br />
He thenretrained and<br />
worked as awoodwork tutor at<br />
Southland Tech.<br />
Molly worked in the bindery<br />
department at TheTimes.<br />
Bob made the couplea<br />
bedroom suite before theygot<br />
married, andthey still have the<br />
bed, tallboy, stooland bedside<br />
table heexpertlycraftedfrom<br />
Southland beech.<br />
Molly said she had never<br />
expected either oneofthem to<br />
live to such good ages and to be<br />
married for so long.<br />
‘‘I hadanew pacemaker<br />
fitted in June and they tell me<br />
it’s good for 15 years,sowe’ll<br />
have to wait andsee what<br />
happens.’’<br />
Bobsaid hismother had<br />
lived until theage of 93 andhe<br />
had known another couplewho<br />
had beenmarried for 70 years.<br />
‘‘Beingmarriedfor so long<br />
has just creptuponus,’’ he<br />
said.<br />
Bob battled andbeatbowel<br />
cancer20years ago and the<br />
coupledelayed their 50th<br />
weddinganniversary<br />
celebrations for ayear.<br />
Molly and Bob Riseley, who<br />
will shortly celebrate their 70th<br />
wedding anniversary, with<br />
their wedding day photo.<br />
