NEWS
Ashburton Courier, October 8, 2020
Have you been
recycling right?
These past two months, Mid
Canterbury’s recycling service,
like many across the country, has
changed.
In addition to paper,
cardboard, tins and cans, only
clean hard plastics that are
grades one, two or five are
recyclable: all lids, soft plastics
and those that aren’t grades one,
two or five must go in the
rubbish.
For many, these changes have
been abig adjustment. When the
wheelie bins were first
introduced in 2017, most plastic
products were acceptable for
recycling as there were
international markets for New
Zealand’s lowgrade mixed
plastics. However, over time
those markets have begun to dry
up and sorting centres like the
one we send our recycling to in
Christchurch are having to be a
lot stricter about the kinds of
plastic that they can accept.
What this means is that we
must be more careful about what
we are putting in our recycling
bins before rolling them up the
driveway to be collected.
If nonrecyclable material is
put into those bins –aswehave
been experiencing, it
contaminates the clean recycling
resulting in entire truck loads
being rejected, which costs
ratepayers.
We want to get this right and
ensure as much recycling as
possible is making it to the
sorting centre for processing –
not ending up in landfill.
To help get this right, many
residents who receive the
kerbside collection service will
have seen auditing teams making
their way up their street and
checking the contents of the
yellow wheelie bins.
Some residents have been
29
getting agold star for their bins,
while others are still getting up
to speed. When nonrecyclable
items are found, they are often
put inside the person’s mailbox
with anote explaining that they
need to go in the rubbish.
Repeat offending items have
been container lids, bottles with
lids still on them and takeaway
packaging.
Plastic lids –even if they have
aone, two or five on them either
get caught up in the sorting
machines and cause problems,
or due to their weight and shape,
end up in the wrong recycling
groups and contaminate the
paper bales. For these reasons,
no lid can go in recycling.
Takeaway packaging is also an
issue, as what we think is purely
cardboard or paper is actually
often coated in wax or the
packaging isn’t clean of food
residue.
The best place to look if you
are unsure of what can go in your
recycling bin is the free Bin It
Right handbook that was
delivered to households in early
August. If you didn’t receive one
or have misplaced it, please
come and pick up acopy from the
council office or check out the
digital version at binitright.nz.
With everyone’s care and
attention, we will get this right.
Thank you to everyone who has
been doing their best to adjust
and ensuring their recycling
habits are correct.
New terms help
