Boost for small businesses
• By Avneesh Vincent
CHRISTCHURCH’S first
Learning Exchange platform
was launched last week by
Sumner Bays Union Trust.
The online project will help
connect businesses with the
community.
“It’s a web-based platform
which will also give the small
businesses an opportunity to
give workshops and promote
their products and services
through our platform,” said
Learning Exchange co-ordinator
Eve Wingerath.
She said it would help people
could reach out and learn different
skills from other people in
the community.
The platform was supposed to
be released in January but was
delayed due to Covid-19. Since
the lockdown, a lot of small
businesses had suffered both
financially and emotionally. It
also would help people to come
out of their isolation and feel
involved in a learning process.
About 50 people have volunteered
to teach their skills
through workshops and more
than 100 people have shown
interest to participate.
The current workshops would
include lessons on sewing, composting,
plant-powered kitchens,
and so forth.
Wingerath said these
courses would take place in
different locations, based on
the organiser’s preference,
and would be limited to 12
people. The restrictions around
attendance were due to the
concerns of the venue capacity
and Covid-19 limitations.
The trust had worked with
Bridge2Rocks Timebank so that
people could pay with time.
“You will get one credit per
hour of teaching and you could
use that credit to pay for some
other course you want to learn.
It’s a commerce of time,” said
Wingerath.
About $12,000 was invested
in the process of launching the
platform which included costs of
creation of a website, acquiring
Wingerath are
working to make
the Learning
Exchange webbased
platform a
success.
teaching resources, databases,
and so forth.
She said the Learning Exchange
at present covered the
communities of Sumner, Redcliffs,
Heathcote, Mt Pleasant,
and Woolston.
“Other communities could
also approach and share what
they want to do with their ideas,
however that is something for
later,” Wingerath said.
Sumner
teen gets
recognition
• From page 1
Claudia was one of three New
Zealand students who won
awards in the litter less campaign
category, with entries related to
the topic of litter and waste.
Her photo, which was placed
in the photography 15-18 years
category, features her younger
sister, Sienna, collecting waste on
Sumner beach.
The “huge” sunrise
represented the start of a new
day and symbolised the start of
something new, or change.
“You can clearly see her silhouette
where she is eagerly dragging
the trash bin in order to make a
change. Small acts matter,’’ she
said.
“She’s a surfer from Sumner
who is protecting what she cares
about and ultimately fixing
something she didn’t cause.”
Sustainability was something
the student held close to her heart
as it determined the future of her
generation and beyond.
“I am proud of my Maori
heritage and I wanted this
photo to capture the powerful
essence of our land and water
as taonga (treasures), and our
spiritual connection to our land,
Papatuanuku,” she said.
