Michelle Ingrid Hansen 1969 ~ 2020 New magazine for you! It is with the utmost sorrow that we mourn the loss of Michelle Ingrid Hansen, who passed suddenly at the age of 50 on September 26, 2020. Michelle will be lovingly remembered by Hans Hansen, her husband of 28 years; her two daughters Daniella and Mikenna Hansen; her brother Neil Hartung; and parents Percy and Ingrid Hartung, who will always cherish the memory of their beautiful daughter. Michelle Hansen was born on October 18, 1969 in Nelson, BC at Kootenay Lake Hospital. She certainly made an entrance when she came into the world—shocking her parents with the surprise addition of her twin brother Woody. Always tenacious, Michelle made sure she was the first twin to greet her loving parents. Flanked by her brothers, Neil and Woody, in the cozy town of Kaslo, BC, Michelle was always ready and able to circumvent any problems that arose. One of Michelle’s particularly memorable conquests still brings a smile to her parents’ face. One morning when the children were young, her mother had baked a particularly large batch of cookies. However, once they were out of the oven, Ingrid had to leave them unattended to see to a few chores outside. She left specific instructions to her three children that no cookies were to be eaten in her absence and that she had counted every cookie to be sure. But that wasn’t going to stop Michelle. Upon returning from her chores, Ingrid found that Michelle and her brothers had followed their mother’s instructions in a somewhat creative fashion. Not a single cookie was missing, but the three children had satisfied their hunger by taking a bite out of each and every one. Never one to stand idly by when another person was in need of a helping hand, Michelle was constantly looking out for others. From a young age, she possessed a truly amazing sense of compassion. As a girl, Michelle would bring home peers from school who were being bullied or some who were simply in need of a friend. Everyone around her could find a friend in Michelle. Her mother and father warmly remember these times of truly inspiring grace and kinship beaming from their daughter. Never further than a heartbeat away, we will forever hold you dearest in our hearts. We love you. You have your own set of wings now, Michelle. As so many people know, Michelle carried her loving nature throughout the entirety of her life. She loved her daughters with every fibre of her being, providing them with astounding care and attentiveness. Michelle also bestowed her gift of caring to the many senior citizens she looked after in Kaslo—they too were a big part of Michelle’s life and always at the forefront of her mind. Not a day went by that Michelle didn’t have a big smile on her face or a story to share about someone she loved and cared for in Kaslo. And, indeed, not a day has passed, nor will come to be, that those people whom Michelle loved so much, would falter if asked to share an equally warm and loving story about her. It is extremely difficult to summarize in only a few words the story of a person who lived with such vivacity. With such elegance. With such grace and brilliance. A woman with so much personality and originality. A woman who touched the hearts of absolutely everyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. Michelle’s smile illuminated every room she entered; she was and is a beautiful soul. Her presence will never be forgotten. The memories of Michelle that we all share and those private memories we only shared with her…in those lovely memories, Michelle lives on eternally. The family hopes it won’t be too long, perhaps the spring, when all who knew and loved her can gather together safely in celebration of Michelle’s life. Brent MacDonald features in one of the stories in the new online magazine, Living Here. Living Here is a new online publication that highlights the positive solutions coming out of our rural communities around healthy living, clean energy, land stewardship, and strong rural economies. It’s a not-for-profit, non-partisan online magazine with no advertising that captures stories about the people and land that make small towns and rural living such a treasure. Living Here features the work of three local writers, Sarah Beauchamp, Anna Lamb-Yorski and Sarah Lord. Each writer has one feature story in the launch of the new magazine. The stories take an in-depth look at people in the Kootenays and surrounding area making changes to their lives that help keep them eating healthy, staying active and connecting to their roots. “These are stories about the people and values that we all care about. Like people around the campfire or a family at a holiday meal, we share stories that let us learn about each other’s lives and help us help each other to enjoy and take care of our home,” Sarah Beauchamp says. They include the story of two people who have had similar experiences finding a new appreciation for their heritage by working the land, a look at the past, present and future of the Rock Creek Fall Fair and its impact on the community, and an insight into the gardening resurgence resulting from the pandemic. “I think each story will ask, how can we live better lives? Our health and safety, our quality of life, and our local communities are shared priorities,” Sarah Lord says. “Despite our differences, we all care about our community and show it in different ways. Living Here hopes to highlight this,” says Anna Lamb-Yorski. Living Here shows small towns telling big stories. Subscribe online for free and receive new stories each week as they are posted. Recognizing Nelson’s cultural custodians The City of Nelson is now accepting applications and nominations for its annual Heritage Award, which honours individuals, businesses or organizations who have made an outstanding contribution towards the preservation and/or promotion of Nelson’s heritage. The winner will receive an $1000 honorarium to be announced in December.
