that will support the long-term stability of jobs and economic
recovery in the sector.
In 2019, government made changes to the Labour Relations
Code that were supported by recommendations put
forward by an independent and expert review. This review
was completed in 2018 by a balanced committee of special
advisers, including an employer and a labour representative
and included recommendations based on a thorough public
consultation.
The review identified one important area regarding successorship
protections for the forestry sector that needed further
consultation before any further recommendations could be
made. For this reason, government intends to establish an
industrial inquiry commission (IIC) under the code to review
contract tendering in the forestry sector, outside the scope of
any Indigenous or First Nations interests.
“Protecting workers’ job security and benefits will help with
the economic recovery of the BC forestry sector,” said Doug
Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource
Operations and Rural Development. “That’s why we’ll appoint
an IIC to reach out to industry experts, unions and employers
to better understand successorship and contract tendering in
the sector.”
The outcome of an industrial inquiry commission will help
guide future potential changes to the Labour Relations Code
or the code’s regulations.
Improving fairness for workers and ensuring balance in
workplaces are shared priorities between government, the
BC Green Party caucus and Andrew Weaver, MLA for Oak
Bay-Gordon Head, and is part of the Confidence and Supply
Agreement.
Muffin
NELSON
This is sweet Muffin. She has been a purring machine since
being with us. She needs like 5 minutes of warm up time and
then she will be purring up a storm. Being as she is a kitten still
she is quite playful once she’s comfortable. She and her brother
Angus tend to play around a lot together. She came from a
multi cat house and would do well with a companion.
On February, 22 nd 2020, 86 local people of all ages
walked 5 or 10 km, in the cold, down Columbia Avenue. They walked
in solidarity with thousands of people across Canada in Castlegar’s 3rd
Coldest Night of the Year, a National walkathon for homelessness.
The Castlegar Youth Action Network and Homelessness Partnering
Strategy Programs want to thank you!
We also want to thank the many
people and businesses that
have shown support, year after
year, for local people experiencing
homelessness and other
vulnerabilities, and for our youth,
a vulnerable population in itself
and one whose members help
plan and contribute to this event
every year.
A big thank you to all of those
who aren’t named in this release.
Again, to the 86 walkers, the 12
teams, the 160 donors and the
66 volunteers who made this
event happen. We could not do
this without you!
The businesses that have
shown support for this cause as
sponsors, we appreciate you and
your commitment to building a
community that picks people up
and helps them when they are
down. Mercer Celgar – our lead
sponsor from day one, Martech
Electrical, Teck Trail Operations,
Kootenay Savings and Heritage
Credit Unions, thank you for
showing your support year after
Castlegar: A Community that CARES!
Castlegar:
year! Wood Wyant, thank you
for joining as a sponsor for the
2020 year.
We want to reach out and thank
all the businesses that provided
free or in-kind services to support
this event – and those who make
teams for walking alongside
other community members.
• Our media sponsors: the
Pennywise, The Goat Radio,
EZ Rock, The Castlegar Source
and the Castlegar Daily News.
As a non-profit we need your
help promoting our event!
• Our venue sponsors, the United
Church and Speedy Auto
Glass, for hosting our registration,
opening ceremonies and
outside rest stop.
• Our local grocery stores and
restaurants for supplying us
with donations to feed our
volunteers and walkers on
walk day: No Frills, Safeway,
Kootenay Market, Mc Donald’s
and Tim Hortons, and this
year, the Bhudda Bistro who
handed out soup to the walkers
along the way! The warm
cup of coffee or hot chocolate,
soup or a muffin goes a long
way on a cold day in the winter.
Much appreciated!
Finally, to the dozens of small
businesses that provided in-kind
donations and gift certificates for
our participants. Thank you!
As the Coordinator for the
Castlegar Youth Action Network
and the Director for Castlegar‘s
Coldest Night of the Year I also
want to acknowledge and thank
all the people involved in developing
service provider partnerships
that helped execute and
build momentum for this event
while giving youth and students a
chance to be a part of a catalyst
for local change.
Thank you to the Castlegar Youth
Rotary Interact group for once
again organizing and hosting the
rest stop.
Thank you to the Selkirk College
School of Nursing, Social Work
and Child and Youth Care for
continuing to provide practicum
students, for recruiting teams
and developing unique learning
opportunities, and for creating
a trans-disciplinary practicum
around this event. We love having
the students get involved.
In 2020, a new partnership and
a new event was formed. Stanley
Humphries School – thank you
so much for hosting the first annual
Coldest Day of the Year,
an event entirely run by youth,
fundraising for the same goals.
We appreciate that you took
notice of the need for support in
our community and that you saw
fit to trust CDCSS to do a most
amazing job delivering the funds
to those in need. Thank you to all
the Stanley Humphries staff and
students who embarked on the
journey to run this event!
Together, these people
and the two events raised
$11,415.00 for the Castlegar
and District Community
Services, Homelessness
Partnering Strategy and Castlegar
Youth Action Network
Programs.
In 2021, we will host this event
again. Now more than ever, people
affected by these vulnerabilities
need our help! Thank you to
everyone involved and to all the
people who will sign up and be a
part again, for years to come!
2021 Coldest Night is coming. It
will be different this year and we
will need everyone’s support now
more than ever. For this event everyone
can help to do something
to help someone in need. It feels
great to do it!
Visit CNOY.org after Nov. 1st
2020 to sign up and walk, fundraise
